ABOUT THE COMPANY

British Physical Laboratories (popularly known as BPL group) is an Indian electronics

company; founded in 1963 in Palakkad, Kerala, headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Initially, this company was manufacturing hermetically sealed precision panel meters for the

defense forces for Bharat electronics as a subcontract of the Indian Army. Later the company

expanded into various products like televisions telecommunication equipment. In the late

1980s, it became India’s biggest consumer electronics and telecommunication company.

In the early 1990s, when the new economic reforms or LPG policy was implemented, BPL

Ltd. retained its strong presence and growth rate in the market. They concentrated more on

importing technology, innovations, and manufacturing electronic products. But due to

internal disputes, the company faced a massive financial crisis in 2004. It was restructured by

Ajit G. Nambiar in 2015, focusing on different products like energy, healthcare, etc. It

partnered with Flipkart as an online retailer.

THE ECONOMIC REFORMS 1991

The economic reforms were introduced in 1991 by Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh.

Economic reforms refer to the Liberalization, Privatization, and Globalization policy. The

plan was to liberalize the economy from various licenses and regulations; Privatization as to

privatizing the multiple companies owned by the government, and globalization to open the

economy for the global world to trade in. Because of these reforms, a lot of competition

increased in the market, like Samsung and LG were one of the major competitors for BPL

Ltd in 1991. On the other hand, it helped the companies bring the latest and advanced

technology to India.

ABOUT THE ENTREPRENUERS

T.P. G. Nambiar

T.P. Gopalan Nambiar is an entrepreneur businessman; who was initially a Non- resident

Indian (NRI) and is also considered the first hero of reverse brain drain. He had a

Postgraduate diploma in Refrigeration and

Airconditioning and experience in the management

of industrial enterprises for over four decades. In

his early career days, he went to England to work

for several companies and then later in 1963, BPL

India.

These are the companies and businesses established

by Mr. T.P. G. Nambiar- British Physical

Laboratories India Pvt. Ltd, Bharat Energy Ventures Limited, Bharat EPDC Energy Private

Limited, and collaboration with a Japanese company, Sanyo and Toshiba.

The reason T.P. G. Nambiar mentioned establishing this enterprise in the first place was the

passion to create and innovate products and create a quality lifestyle. Along with this, he also

got motivated to start his enterprise while working under several London companies as he felt

like working for himself and creating a company that manufactures quality products for the

people.

Ajit G. Nambiar

Ajit Gopalan Nambiar is currently the Executive chairman of the board, Compliance officer,

managing director of BPL limited. He is the son of T.P.G. Nambiar. He has a degree in

computer engineering from Boston University, USA. Before joining his father’s business, he

worked under different companies. Then in 1993, Mr. Ajit G. Nambiar took over his business

4
as the managing director of the company. Later in 1999, he became the chairman of the

company.

These are the companies and businesses established by Mr. Ajit G. Nambiar- BPL Display

Devices Limited, BPLTelecom Private Limited, Nambiar International Investments Private

Limited, Phoenix Holdings Pvt Ltd, Stallion Computers Pvt Ltd, SANYO BPL Private

Limited, Dynamic Electronic Private Limited, Merino Finance Private Limited, and BPL

Techno Vision Private Limited.

The motive for Mr. Ajit G. Nambiar is quite

similar to what T.P. G. Nambiar had. His

motive to restructure the enterprise was to

fulfill or complete the vision and goals of his

father. Apart from this, he also wanted to

explore new opportunities, develop various

new products and bring in updated and advanced technology.

ENTREPRENUERIAL COMPETENCIES

T.P. G. Nambiar as an entrepreneur, has seen both a huge success and a setback in his

company BPL Ltd. He made BPL a national leader in consumer and electronics goods; along

with this, when other companies were manufacturing goods with outdated technology BPL

Ltd also became the technology leader and manufactured everything by themselves. On the

other hand, when it comes to his son or his successor Ajit G. Nambiar, he proved to be as

talented and hard-working as his father. When he took over the company initially, the

company faced a massive financial crisis due to internal issues. Still, he managed to get the

company back to track and introduced various diversity into the company like soft energy,

computer peripherals, and other businesses. From many past instances shared by colleagues

5
and employees, both the entrepreneurs had clear goals and visions; they used to have clear

visions and plan out long- and short-term goals. One of the colleagues once said, “His

success is attributed to his clear vision. He always knew what he wanted.” about T.P. G.

Nambiar. The second entrepreneurial competency both the father and son had was

persistence. T.P G. Nambiar worked hard to establish the company during various

regulations. In contrast, Ajit G. Nambiar, too, worked relentlessly to get the company back

into the market even after such a colossal failure. The third entrepreneurial competency they

possessed was the demand for efficiency and effectiveness. A competitor rarely compliments

the rival company. Still, once, an employee of Phillips said that BPL Ltd manufactures

products that never fail and are cost-effective. This statement shows how particular BPL Ltd

was about the quality of the products they used to sell. Systematically planning and

monitoring the company's activities is one of the competencies the duo of father and son

shared. They both plan their every action and carefully decide according to the goals and

objectives of the businesses. Fifth and the last entrepreneur competency they share is

opportunity seeking. T.P. G. Naimbar used to find loopholes in the system and then create a

business opportunity like he did when he started his company. He always believed in either

grabbing an opportunity or creating one. In the case of Ajit G. Nambiar, he seized every

chance he got and restructured the company as BPL collaborated with Flipkart.

Apart from these entrepreneur competencies, some of the other competencies that Mr. Ajit G.

Nambiar possesses are like he is a risk-taking entrepreneur. He took a risk to reinvest and

restructure a company whose brand was defamed just a couple of decades back. He is also

more committed to his work than his father, as one of the employees once said that T.P. G.

Nambiar is not a workaholic. Still, Ajit Nambiar gives time and attention to the work and is a

very hard-working entrepreneur.
