Scope and Content

William H. Grotheer was born in Boone, Iowa, on October 14, 1920, as the son
of Henry and Nora Bohner Grotheer. In 1942, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts
from Union College at Lincoln, Nebraska. He married Dorothea Miller. As a young man
he worked as a pastor of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada and then in the
United States serving at the First Toronto Seventh-day Adventist Church (1950) among
others. By the mid-1960s he was the head of the Bible and History Department at
Madison College. He then went to Andrews University where he completed a Master of
Arts degree in 1966 graduating “cum laude.” Afterwards he requested a leave of
absence in order to be free to write and speak. Soon after, he established Adventist
Laymen’s Foundation, which also accepted tithe and offerings. The Foundation built a
campus in Ozone, Arkansas, where monthly convocations, annual fellowships, and
other meetings took place. Grotheer spoke at many meetings around the country. He
also published the periodical, Watchman, What of the Night? from 1967 to 2006. On
March 26, 1972, he was dropped from membership of the Seventh-day Adventist
Church. He was well acquainted with Greek, and studied the writings of Ellen G. White,
M. L. Andreasen, and other writers. He was active and well-known among Adventist
independent ministries. He died on May 2, 2009.

The collection contains the personal papers of William H. Grotheer and reflect
his areas of interest and activity over the last thirty plus years of his life. There is
correspondence, but likely only a portion of what he would have had representing all
these years. It is unknown what happened to the rest of it. The papers on the Holy
Flesh Movement are quite significant in themselves.
The extant records of the Adventist Laymen’s Foundation are also included
within the Grotheer Collection. They are in the “First Collection in Alphabetical Order”
series located in box 6.
Also included in the original body of materials received from the donor were what
is now called the Claude E. Holmes Collection. Grotheer apparently received these
significant materials from Holmes or someone who received them from Holmes. They
are a large collection of letters between Holmes and many Adventist church leaders in
the early years of the 20th century dealing with a variety of theological and doctrinal
topics. Grotheer had not blend the Claude Holmes materials with his own papers but
kept them as a separate collection. It seemed appropriate to separate Holmes and
make it an independent collection. See its register also at the Andrews University
Center for Adventist Research.
Arrangement

The arrangement of the collection is essentially as it was donated. It is

categorized by

The miscellaneous collections part consists of three separate collections:
1. Collection in Topical Order [Set 1]
2. First Collection in Alphabetical Order [Set 2]
3. Second Collection in Alphabetical Order [Set 3]
Grotheer began creating the second alphabetical collection for some reason
which is why it was kept in that arrangement. Researchers should look into all three
sets when looking for a certain topic, individual, institution, etc. Further, lectures,
sermons, and presentations may be found in two places:

2. Miscellaneous Collections - Collection in Topical Order [Set 1] - Lectures

Provenance

The materials in this collection were donated to the Center by his daughter, Anne
Grotheer-Shull, in October 2010.

Use

All users of this collection are required to completer the “Application to Use
Unpublished Records,” and to observe the regulation specified in the “Patron
Agreement” and “Researcher’s Code of Conduct.” All records in this collection are

Additionally, approximately 25 linear feet of library books came with the collection.
Unfortunately a large number of books were left at the Grotheer home and lost due to a
lack of space to transport them. Of the books which were brought to the Center they
were a combination of William and Dorothea’s libraries. The topics were a combination
of theological works (majority) with nutritional books (about 5 linear feet) and some
musical records. The nutritional books were largely integrated in the collections of the
Center. The theological works were turned over to the Andrews University Seminary
Library and if they did not want them they were given to the Services for Adventist
International Libraries (S.A.I.L.) for distribution to Adventist academic libraries outside
of North America.
