INTRODUCTION

Bible Project Overview in the Book of Luke or Gospel of Luke

The Gospel According to Luke it’s one of the earliest accounts of Jesus’ life
Luke - He is the traveling companion and co-worker of Paul the Apostle
- He is also known as a Doctor - Colossians 4:14 & Philemon v.24

Luke 1:1-4 – In this verse, Luke tells us HOW and WHY he wrote the book of Luke
He acknowledges that there are many other fine accounts of Jesus’ life out there. But he
wanted to go back to the eyewitness traditions of His many earliest Disciples as he could v.1-2

To produce what he called “an orderly account about the things that have been fulfilled
among us v.2

The word “fulfill” shows us why Luke wrote this account. For him, the story of Jesus isn’t just
an ancient history v.3

He wants to show how it’s the fulfillment of the long covenant story of God and Israel and
bigger than that, of the story of God and the whole world

OBSERVATION
Chapter 1-2 – There’s a long introduction that sets up the story of John the Baptist and Jesus
- Parallel Birth stories of John the Baptist and Jesus
- 1 v.13 & 57 and Chp.1 v.31 & 2 v.6-7
- In this story, Luke talks about Zacharias and Elizabeth who will give birth to John the
Baptist
- Joseph and Mary who will give birth to Jesus Christ
- They both received an unlikely divine promise that they were going to have a son and
both promises are fulfilled
- Because of that, they sing poems of Celebration v.68-79 – these poetic songs, are filled
with echoes from the Old Testament’s Psalms and Prophets showing how these children
would fulfill God’s ancient promises (1:46-55)
- These children have their purpose or role and why they should be born.
o John – he is the prophetic messenger promised in the Torah and the Prophets
who is going to prepare Israel to meet their God.
o Jesus – He is the Messianic King promised to David who’s going to bring God’s
reign over Israel and God's blessings to the nations just like He promised to
Abraham. Isaiah 9:1-7
- When Mary brings Jesus to the Jerusalem temple for His dedication and there were
Anna and Semion elderly prophets 2:25-35
Why I am saying this? How important for us that we need to know the background and the
purpose of the writing of Luke?

Because, if we only just focus on one verse which states that “For nothing will be impossible
with God”
- We are only focusing on what the Lord has done in the life of Zacharias & Elizabeth,
Joseph & Mary that God gives them a child.

- Where in this story or this Gospel of Luke, God wants to show us His big plan of
redemption to all mankind, that Jesus is the Messianic King who brings God’s blessing to
all Humanity.

So for us this evening, what is his message for all of us?

- For nothing is impossible with God

Impossible - adynateō – verb – Future Active Indicative 3rd Person Singular –
cannot be done, to be unable
- It means that it’s an action word, it tells that the action hasn't happened yet, and
talks about something that’s happening in reality.

- In the life of Zachariah & Elizabeth, Joseph and Mary – God’s wonderful plan for his
people does not end and that time when they received the unlikely divine promise, but
then, that was the beginning of the fulfillment of his promise to His people.

- It tells us that for God there’s nothing that He cannot be done, and that he still working
in its everyone’s lives. That He still working in my life, for your life, and all our lives.

So tell your seatmate, God’s still working on the impossible things in your life. He will not stop
until it’s all done.

So don’t stop believing in Him. In times that doubt will overtake us, have faith, and believe in
His constant, unending manifestation in your life.

But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun

and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the
other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.

The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on

them.

You shall multiply the nation, You shall increase their gladness; They will be glad in Your presence As with

the gladness of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders, The rod of their oppressor, as at

the battle of Midian.

For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for

the fire.

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His

name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his

kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness

From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.
