The Reign of King David


After the Death of Saul
The King is Dead (2 Samuel 2:1-3)
• 2 Samuel 1 mainly covers David’s mourning for Saul’s
and Jonathan’s death
• David asked God what he should do next – knowing that
he was going to be the next king.
• God told David to go to Hebron, which is a town in Judah.

A New King Comes (2 Samuel 2:4)


• When David came to Hebron, the men anointed David as
king of Judah.
• Not king of Israel?

The House of Saul at War
Saul’s Son Anointed King (2 Samuel 2:9-11)
• Saul still had a son alive whose name was Ish-Bosheth.
• Abner (who was Saul’s cousin) took Ish-Bosheth and
made him king over all Israel at a place called Mahanaim.
• But the tribe of Judah was loyal to David
• David reign in Hebron for 7 and a half years

David Wins The War (2 Samuel 2:12)


• Abner and Joab (representing David) waged a civil war
against each other
• This was called the battle of Gibeon and David’s side won
• Joab and Abishai’s brother (Asahel) was killed by Abner
in battle (2:18-23)

David Established As King of Israel (Part 1)
Abner Changes Loyalty to David
• Tensions between Ish-Bosheth and Abner began to form
• Abner sent messengers to David to propose to convince
Israel to follow David (2 Samuel 2:17-21)
• David sent Abner away in peace, but Joab believed
Abner was spying

Abner Killed (2 Samuel 3:26-27)


• As revenge for when Abner killed Asahel, Joab killed
Abner
• Not during war -> murder
• David was upset by this (2 Samuel 3:28-29)
• David pronounced a curse on Joab and mourned for
Abner

David Established As King of Israel (Part 2)
The Fall of Ish-Bosheth
• When Abner was killed, Ish-Bosheth lost courage and so
did Israel
• Rekab and Baanah, a couple of the leaders in Israel’s
army, killed Ish-Bosheth in his own bed (2 Samuel 4:5-6)
• Rekab and Baanah brought the “good news” to David
• David was not pleased by this and had the men killed (2
Samuel 4:9-12)

David as King over Israel


• All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and
anointed David
• Fulfilled the promise to David by God – “you will
shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their

David Conquers Jerusalem
Jerusalem
• Jerusalem was a city occupied by Jebusites (one people
group among the 7 referred to as Canaanites)
• Jerusalem means “city of peace”, and had a fortress at
Zion (which means “utopia” or “holy place”)

How David Conquered Jerusalem


• Jerusalem was well fortified and surrounded by the blind
and the lame
• The Jebusites thought David could not get in the city, but
David went through a gutter (water shaft) and conquered
the city
• David called the fortress of Zion the city of David

David And the Philistines
Part 1 (2 Samuel 5:17-21)
• When the Philistines heard that David was anointed king,
they set up in the Valley of Rephaim to attack David
• David inquired of the Lord, and the Lord told David to
go and attack
• David went to Baal Perazim and defeated the Philistines

Part 2 (2 Samuel 5:22-25)


• The Philistines came to Rephaim again
• David inquired of the Lord, and God told him to wait for
the rustle of the mulberry trees before attacking
• David obeyed, and the Philistines were routed

The Ark of the Covenant
Creation and Purpose (Exodus 25:10)
• The ark of the covenant was created by the Israelites at
God’s command to Moses on Mount Sinai
• It contains the stone tablet Ten Commandments
• Whenever the ark of the covenant was carried, the
presence of the Lord would go with them, especially into
battle (Joshua 6:2-6)
• The ark of the covenant was to be lifted by 4 priests on
each end
• God’s presence would be between the two cherubim

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem (Part 1)
The Plan of Action (2 Samuel 6:1-5)
• David took 30,000 young men to bring the ark to
Jerusalem
• They set the ark on a cart
• This was a time of great celebration for the people of
Israel

Tragedy Strikes (2 Samuel 6:6-9)


• Uzzah, one of the cart guiders, touched the ark to keep it
from slipping and instantly was struck dead
• David was angry and afraid of the Lord
• David called the place Perez Uzzah (Uzzah’s life was
breached)
• David left the ark instantly at the house of Obededom
• God blessed the house of Obededom New Testament Church
because the ark was 10
The Ark Brought to Jerusalem (Part 2)
David Brings the Ark Back (2 Samuel 6:12-15)
• When David heard that the house of Obed-Edom was
blessed, David went to bring the ark back to the City of
David
• David made a sacrifice to God
• David danced with all his might and all of Israel were
rejoicing

Michal Despises David (2 Samuel 6:20-23)


• While David was dancing, Michal despised David in her
heart
• David told her that it was before the Lord that he did
these things, and not before man
• As a result, Michal had no children until the day of her

David’s Desire to Build a Temple
David’s Desire (1 Chronicles 28:2)
• David wanted to build a house for God as a resting place
of the ark of the covenant
• God told David that he should not build the temple
because he is a warrior and has shed blood
• God would raise up his son Solomon to build the temple
of God
• David had already made plans for the temple (as he was
led by the Spirit) and gave them to Solomon
