Students should learn how to greet people when they enter and leave a room.
They should know how to introduce themselves and ask others simple questions
for others to introduce themselves. They should be able to identify and name some
of the classroom objects.

Activities:
ESL 1. Walk Around the Classroom (1Ld1P.WEL, 1Sc5P.WEL, 1Lm1P. WEL)
Children sit around you.
Tell the children that you will go on a walk around the classroom. Students line up
behind you. You might want to split them into 2 groups and each group line up
behind one teacher.
Walk around the classroom and introduce everything you see such as the teacher’s
desk, the Circle Time Board, the toys, the windows, the cubbies, the bathroom, the
door, etc.
During your walk, give them some instructions such as ‘Stop”, “Sit Down’, “Line
Up”, “Stand Up’, “Hold Hands”, “Make a Circle”, etc. to practice listening skills and
understanding simple classroom instructions.
ESL 2. Classroom Treasure Hunt (1Ld1P.WEL, 1Ld4P.WEL, 1Sc5P.WEL)
Print pictures of the unit vocabulary (book, boy, chair, classroom, desk, door, girl,
paper, pencil, table, toy, crayons).
Introduce the vocabulary.
Shuffle the cards after your introduction.
Place the cards face down in front of you. Children take turns to come to you to
pick a card. They should say what it is and find it in the classroom. For example,
children say “I found the door.”
When everyone got a turn, you can play one more time as a group this time.
Teacher calls out different things you can find in the classroom and children have
to walk to it and touch it.

ESL 3. Following Directions (1Ld1P.WEL)


Print worksheet WTS VCSE 16 for each student. You will need crayons.
Review colors (red, blue, orange, green, purple, yellow, pink). Children color the
worksheet following your directions.

ESL 4. Mystery Box (What do you need? I need…) (1Sc5P.WEL, 1Uv5P.WEL)


You will need to prepare classroom objects and a box with a hole so that a student
can put one hand in.
Have the class sit in a circle. Students should ask the teacher "What do you need?"
He/she can answer "I need a crayon".
One student will pick 1-2 objects in a mystery box, and the class will ask him/her
“What is this?/ What are these?” The students will tell the group what it is and
give it to the teacher and say "Here you are". The teacher should say "Thank you"
to the student.

ESL 5. Hello (1Ld2P.WEL, 1Ug2P.WEL)


Children sit on the floor in a circle around you. Sing the Good Morning song once.
Say “Good morning, I am (name). I am your English teacher. I’m … years old.” Go
around the circle to shake the students' hands, say good morning, and ask them
what their name is and how old they are. Then, ask the children to raise their left
hand in the air (show them which is left and to turn to their left side to say hello to
their friend on the left. Encourage the children to introduce themselves to their
friend on the left. Last, ask the students to raise their right hand in the air (show
them which is right and to turn to their right side to say hello to their friend on the
right. Encourage the children to introduce themselves to their friend on the right.
Sing What’s Your Name song. Look at each student as you sing and have them sing
their name to the group.

ESL 6. Pass the Ball (1Ld1P.WEL, 1Ug2P.WEL)


Children sit on the floor in a circle around you. Tell the children that you are going
to play a game called “Pass the Ball”. Demonstrate how to play with the child
sitting next to you or your co-teacher. You will have to say “Hello, I am (name).
I’m… years old. I will pass the ball to…” Roll the ball to your partner. He/she says
“Hello, I am (name). I’m… years old. I will pass the ball to …”
Sing What’s Your Name song. Look at each student as you sing and have them sing
their name to the group.

ESL 7. Colorful Art (1Ld1P.WEL, 1Uv5P.WEL)


Show WTS VSCE 14 on the screen.
Children sit on their spot in front of the screen. Review colors (red, blue, orange,
green, purple, yellow, pink). Tell the children that in Art we can use many colors.
Say: “Today, we will look at different paintings and you will have to tell me what
color you see.” Tell the children that if they want to talk they have to take turns so
they should raise their hand up. Demonstrate with a co-teacher. Show the first
painting. Say: “What is this?/ What are these? What color do you see?” Encourage
the children to raise their hand up and say “This is/ These are…. I see the color …”

ESL 8. Back to School I Spy (1Ld4P.WEL, 1Uv5P.WEL)


Review the unit vocabulary.
Tell the children they will play a game called I spy. Make sure there are enough of
each item for all students to find around the classroom.
Teacher says: “ I spy something I can use to write”.
Children stand up and find a pen, pencil, etc. in the classroom then bring it to the
teacher. Teacher will ask “What is this?” The student is expected to answer “This is
a…”
Tips: Children can also lead the game.
Make sure you have enough time to ask the students to clean up all of the items.
You could have one student collecting one item and cleaning up for example for
extra practice.

ESL 9. Follow the Leader (1Ld1P.WEL, 1Ug7P.WEL)


The teacher will have students use listening skills and follow the teacher's
directions such as stand up, make a line, walk, sit down, etc. When they’re familiar
with the verbs, have them work in small groups of 3-4 so they can take turns being
the teacher.

ESL10. Boy and Girl (1Ld1P.WEL, 1Ld4P.WEL, 1Ug7P.WEL)


Children sit in a circle around you. Say: “Teacher … is a boy/girl.” Ask them if you
are a boy or a girl. Ask them to tell the group if they are a boy or a girl. Ask the
children to raise their hand up if they are a boy, then if they are girls. Count the
number of boys in the classroom. Count the number of girls in the classroom. Ask
the children to stand up and make a line. Ask the girls to stand on your left side
and line up. Play a variation of Simon Says. Tell the students that you will give
directions only to the girls or the boys to follow. They have to listen carefully.
For example, say:
“If you are a boy, sit down.
If you are a girl, walk around the room
If you are a girl, clap your hands.”
Now when they understand the game, have them play in small groups. In each
group, they will take turns saying the commands.

ESL11. What’s Your Name? (1Wa1P.WEL, 1Ld2P.WEL)


Prepare name tags for the students. Write the names of the students in tracing
letters on construction paper. Cut them out in a rectangular shape. Invite the
students to trace the letters of their names and decorate their name tags. Cut
small pieces of double face tape. Students stick one side on the back of their name
tag and then stick the name tag on their shirt. When they’re done, go around the
class and ask “What’s your name?”

ESL12. What’s In Your Bag? (1Uv5P.WEL, 1Sc5P.WEL)


You will need to model with your co-teacher first.
Then have student work in groups. They will need to put school items in a school
bag. You can print out a set of mini flashcards for each group. One will take 1 or 2
items out then ask the others “What is this?/What are these?” The other students
will answer “This is…These are” then another student will take the items to ask.

Read the story “First Day of School”. Ask the children how the critter’s first day of
school was and what he did. Ask kids what they often do on their first day of
school. Ask the Vietnamese English teacher what she likes about her first day of
school.
Have the kids discuss and share what they like about the first day of school.

You'll assess students in groups of 4-5. Play Simon says with the verbs of the unit
(stand up, sit down, walk, etc.)

Teacher Notes & Reflection


By the end of this Unit, learners will have revised what they learnt previously. A
teacher has to ensure that every learner has made significant progress in learning
the material. The variety of activities are used for this purpose including but not
limited to games, presentations, quizzes, and picture cards. Reading, Writing, Use
of English, Listening and Speaking are to be developed constantly with the close
reference to the learning objectives. The lessons have to be based on Active
Learning aiming to improve students' critical thinking, self-management, study
and organization skills.
