TASK 1: 6.5 (~6.0)

The given tables illustrate how the world population distribute from 1950 to 2000, with a
forecast of that in 2050.

Overall, the number of people living in all areas experienced an upward trend with the
exception of Europe and North America. In particular, the population in Asia is predicted to
consistently rank first over the next 50-year period.

From 1950 to 2000, the figure for the population in Asia, which comprised the highest
proportion, underwent a slight increase from 56 % to 60%. The percentage of Africa and
Latin America followed broadly similar patterns, with the former growing minimally by 4%
from 9% and the latter rising to 9% from 6%. The number of people in Europe, which was
the second highest out of 6, and that of North America declined significantly by 10% from
22% and fell marginally from 7% to 5%, respectively. The data of the population in Oceania
nearly remained unchanged at 1%. Totally, there was a dramatic rise from 2.5 to 6 billion in
the world population.

In 2050, Africa is estimated to make the largest proportion growth to 20% in terms of
population. In contrast, it is forecasted that there will be a mild drop of 1% in the figure for
the population of Asia and North America. Similarly, a slight decrease from 12% to 7% is
anticipated in the number of Europeans. While the percentage of the population in Latin
America and that of Oceania are predicted to experience a period of stability, with the former
being at 9% and the latter standing at 1%. The world population will increase by a factor of
two-thirds.

TASK 2: 6.5 (~6.0)

In the contemporary world, some people hold the belief that it is crucial to prioritize the
experiments and developments of renewable energy, which will alter fossil fuels. I totally
disagree with this viewpoint because of the difficulty and unnecessary of exploration of
alternatives.

Compelling arguments can be made that discovering the use of alternative resources is too
expensive and waste a wide array of money and efforts of the whole world. First and
foremost, a huge sum of money has to spend on studies and explorations, this is mainly due
to the fact that renewable resources such as solar, wind, water energy, and biofuel,... are
natural elements. Therefore, it is obviously challenging for us to control and take advantage
of renewable energy. Moreover, there are still many people, who do not have well-paid jobs,
can not afford to consume these alternative energies -CC. Secondly, we should make use of
fossil fuels instead. To be more specific, if people do not utilize unrenewable resources like
coal, mines, and oils,… these would remain plentiful and lose their precious value. Also,
many individuals earn their living by exploiting fossil fuels, that is to say, if society no longer
uses unrenewable resources, those people would be redundant and have to find another
job.

Many people firmly believe that it is essential to explore and study alternatives to fossil fuels
as soon as possible. The main reason for this is that people tend to assert that these
resources would run out quickly and their scarcity is an alarming problem. However, there is
still the existence of a wide array of urgent issues such as poverty, hunger, low literacy
rate…Many countries in The United Nations have agreed that by 2030 these matters have to
be solved comprehensively. Therefore, these issues are more emergent that people have to
prioritize and take them into consideration first.

To conclude, there are many discussions revolving around the issue of whether people
should prioritize developments and studying into alternatives to unrenewable resources.
From my perspective, I firmly disagree because of the large money needed to spend on
these unnecessary matters.
