Part 1: Context (50)

Answer the following questions accurately and comprehensively. Your answer will be
evaluated
Using U4CA.

1. Describe completely the statuettes in the headmaster’s classroom. Explain their

representations and symbolisms to the types of thinkers. Make sure to tell the
characteristics of the thinkers. (30pts)

In his narrative essay "Thinking as a Hobby," William Golding explains how he

came to perceive thinking as a hobby. His headmaster gave him the idea to
integrate statuettes in his work, which was his line of thinking. Golding uses the
leopard, lady, and gentleman statuettes as metaphors for the three categories of
thinkers he categorizes in his article.

The Venus of Milo is the lady statuette with no arms, draped in a bath towel
slipping from her waist, represents Grade Three thinkers who follow orders based on
feelings rather than thinking. According to the headmaster, the lady is beautiful and
loving, hence symbolizes love. The gentleman is Rodin’s Thinker, sitting down
gazing in the blank space, thinking hard as what he poses— represents Grade Two
thinkers who critique but have no answers to the problem, since it lacks the ability to
create whenever it destroys. And lastly, the Leopard crouching down, ready to jump
onto its prey represents Grade One thinkers who analyze things without emotions. It
thinks naturally as it lives, without considering its feelings. The statuettes were
initially intended to reflect the headmaster's life, with the lady representing love, the
gentleman representing pure mind, and the leopard representing nature, but Golding
used them to group thinkers depending on their emblem. In terms of qualities, grade
three thinking differs greatly from the other two. Golding intended to show what
thought is and how it originates in the story by moving the statuettes.
2. Who is Ruth? Tell her story and her significance to the article. (10pts)

Ruth, whom Golding finds serious and attractive, and believes that is part of
Grade Two thinkers. He met Ruth when they were still teenagers, around the age of
15. Golding was infatuated with Ruth and had a prospective relationship with her.
She and Golding used to have debates about Methodists vs other religions. But
because Ruth was a Methodist, or that’s what her parents were and wanted her to
believe and pursue— Ruth had a strong sense of belief that the King James version
of the Bible was literally inspired. However, the two writings were different, as said
by Golding, who contends that Catholics believed Saint Jerome's Vulgate was truly
inspired (Golding 1961). Regarding the debates, Ruth goes on to assert that there
are many Methodists and that they cannot all be wrong, but Golding responds that
the Catholic religion is the largest religion (in terms of numbers) and that it can
surpass the number of adherents the Methodists have, indicating that there are
many more people who believe in what Golding is arguing about. "If we were
counting heads, the Buddhists were the lads for my money,” Golding applies calmly.
Later, Ruth’s father found out about the argument the two had, and became upset.
Ruth’s father talks to Golding’s parents, and this gets him in trouble. Which became
a significant event in his life because he discovered how much trouble one may get
into by questioning someone else's views.

Part 2: Analysis (60)

Find the representations per thinkers and answer the components per item.

A. GRADE 3 Thinkers
1. A literary character: John Tyree of Dear John
Introduce the character:

One of the story's major characters is John Tyree. John is a staff sergeant
in the American Army Special Forces. He is a handsome, muscular, soft-spoken
man who loves his father dearly despite the fact that he has autism. He was
pretty quiet and introverted around most people as a child. John, on the other
hand, adores surfing and spending time at the shore. John's life is changed
forever when he meets Savannah Lynn on the beach. John fell in love with
Savannah after just two weeks. Two of his top values in life are duty and loyalty.
John is also generally a loving, kind, and down to earth person who always loves
Savannah and his father.

EXPLANATION WHY THIS CHARACTER BELONGS TO THIS GROUP:

In 2010, Lasse Hallström's romantic war drama Dear John was released in
the United States. It is based on the same-named book by Nicholas Sparks,
published in 2006. John Tyree, a soldier, and Savannah Curtis, an idealistic
college student, start dating passionately. Over the course of the next seven
critical years, the couple stays in touch via letters while John's deployment, which
gets riskier and riskier, keeps them apart. Even though they only occasionally
interact in person, the ramifications of their correspondence are beyond either of
their comprehension.

In this case, John Tyree belongs to grade three thinkers because he

follows orders based on feeling rather than thinking. Since John is very
emotional, he always considers his feelings rather than his thoughts. However,
grade three thinkers comply with directives and do as others request. They never
develop independent thought and are unable to discern between the truth and
lies. In this book, John always follows the orders of his father and Savannah.
There is also an incident where John accidentally strikes Tim, his neighbor.
However, Savannah saw the commotion and stopped talking to John and that is
the reason why John apologized immediately to Tim. In the end, John and
Savannah broke up and Savannah married Tim. But John decided to sell his
father’s coin collection in order to raise money to help Tim’s cancer treatment.
This is another reason why he belongs to this group because he always follows
his feelings rather than his thoughts.
2. A movie/ series character: Sophie from The School for Good and Evil (2022)
Introduce the character:

Sophie of Gavaldon is both the protagonist and antagonist of the newly

released film on Netflix, The School for Good and Evil. Born with unusually
beautiful white locks, the people from the village are afraid that she and her
closest friend, Agatha may be witches, hence calling them freaks. Because of
this, they both live far outside the village to avoid attention. As an avid reader,
Sophie thought of herself as some unappreciated Cinderella and believes that
one day things might turn right, waiting for her Prince charming that will give her
the life she had always longed for, like the one she reads in novels and fairy
tales. Unfortunately, Sophie’s mother passed away when she was young, but
luckily Agatha was there for her while growing up. But then, she grew tired of how
the people treated her and her friend, she was desperate to find a way to escape
reality.

One day, Mrs Deauville from Deauville Storybook Shop (in Gavaldon) told
a story, a legend about the mysterious world in a multiverse, where stories
originate, a school where they teach heroes and villains from famous stories.
Curious, Sophie was intrigued and decided to write a letter to the School for
Good and Evil, and placed it by the wishing tree. Moments later, she was
accepted and brought to an unfamiliar world, with Agatha being dragged along—
however, Sophie unexpectedly gets dropped into the School for Evil, and Agatha
for Good. Sophie felt that she was wronged and came begging the headmaster to
switch schools, but was denied unless she finds a true love’s kiss with a student
from the Good.

EXPLANATION WHY THIS CHARACTER BELONGS TO THIS GROUP:

Sophie is a Grade Three thinker because she is blinded by desires, and

unable to appreciate things as they are and wants more because she thinks she
deserves more. She would only care about herself and was even willing to lose a
great friend like Agatha, who only followed her there because she is concerned
for Sophie’s safety and happiness. Sophie never realized how bad she was
turning until the later part of the story when she joins Rafal in his plan and Sophie
would finally succumb to Evil.

3. A famous person: Donald Trump

Introduce the character:

The 45th president of the United States, Donald John Trump, was born in
New York City on June 14, 1946. Businessman and real estate investor Donald
Trump acquired, operated, or had his name attached to a variety of hotels,
casinos, golf courses, resorts, and residential complexes in the New York City
area and internationally. Trump also began lending his name to several retail
businesses in the 1980s, notably branded clothes, perfume, food, and furniture
collections as well as Trump University, which from 2005 to 2010 provided real
estate education conferences. In 2015, Trump announced his campaign for
president of the United States on the Republican ticket. Trump started to
concentrate on politics at this point. He formally entered the Republican
presidential primary on July 19, 2016. Moreover, he defeated Hillary Clinton, the
Democratic candidate, on November 8, 2016, to become the 45th president of
the United States. Four years later, former vice president Joe Biden won the
election to a second term by defeating Trump.

EXPLANATION WHY THIS CHARACTER BELONGS TO THIS GROUP:

Trump utilized direct words against his rivals and enemies in his business
career in keeping with his bellicose and combative demeanor, specifically
attacking or demeaning them in the media in reaction to their real or imagined
slights. Perhaps surprisingly, despite the widespread belief that political success
necessitates negotiation and compromise rather than "striking back harder,"
Trump did not drastically modify his approach or tone down his rhetoric upon
entering politics. However, he can be pushy, unable to listen, and quick to speak
without thinking, which is obviously a drawback.

Due to his high social aptitude and single-minded desire to be the center
of attention, Donald Trump is regarded as a grade three thinker. He gets
dissatisfied and angry if he isn't allowed to be the central focus. Additionally, he
does not respect academics, views journalists as "threatening," and stays away
from experts because he believes they will disagree with him. Trump's strong
extroversion and low agreeableness may be explained by rage, as evidenced by
his actions. Anger can inspire cruelty, but it can also spur social dominance and
a drive to win others' praise. It is at the core of Trump's appeal, along with a
significant talent for humor (which may also be violent). It seems as though
Trump has expended all of himself in shaping and perfecting his socially
dominant role that he is left with no energy to write a compelling narrative about
his life or the state of the country. Donald Trump is constantly acting like himself
and striving to prevail despite never realizing why.

B. GRADE 2 Thinkers
4. A literary character: Lord Voldemort of Harry Potter
Introduce the character:

Lord Voldemort, also referred to as Tom Marvolo Riddle, is the primary

adversary of the Harry Potter series. He killed his parents, James and Lily Potter,
making him the main character's archenemy as well. He is the descendant of
Salazar Slytherin, who was supposed to unlock the Chamber of Secrets and
expel all Muggle-born students from Hogwarts. Upon first, Riddle's objectives
were limited to carrying out his responsibilities as Slytherin's heir; over time,
however, he developed more ambitious goals, including claiming control of the
entire Wizarding World, reshaping it to reflect his and Slytherin's supremacist
beliefs, and reigning indefinitely. As a result, Voldemort surpassed both the
creator and supreme commander of the Death Eaters, Gellert Grindelwald, and
other Dark Wizards to become the most potent and feared Dark Wizard of all
time.

EXPLANATION WHY THIS CHARACTER BELONGS TO THIS GROUP:

Voldemort is a Dark wizard who has just regained his vigor and is
assembling an army towards the Wizarding world. Cruel, reclusive, and icy,
Voldemort demands total loyalty from his followers while fundamentally
remaining alone and secluded, never making friends or putting his trust in
anyone. In addition to this, Voldemort was not conscious of himself. He was
arrogant and domineering. Voldemort was also unforgiving and dismissed
emotions, be it his own or other people’s. He was extremely forthright and
tactless, frequently upsetting everyone with whom he came into contact.

Voldemort's weaknesses—arrogance, the aforementioned fear of dying,

and complete contempt for things he does not understand—all ultimately lead to
his destruction. Due to this, he falls within the category of grade two thinkers. He
would ultimately lose everything due to his merciless tactics, inability to love or
trust anybody but himself, and conviction in his own infallibility—not because he
lacked strength. Furthermore, a powerful defensive charm that is a manifestation
of good energy and joy, which Voldemort is unable to experience, cannot be cast
by him because of his extreme evil and lack of a human soul.

5. A movie/ series character: President Coriolanus Snow of The Hunger Games

Introduce the character:

A despotic leader of Panem, Coriolanus Snow ruled with tyranny. Early in

his life, he went by the nickname Coryo, which Tigris had originally given him. He
was a mentor to the 10th Hunger Games winning tribute while he was a student
at the Capitol's Academy before becoming president. Moreover, he worked as an
apprentice Game-maker while enrolled in the University and studied advanced
military tactics, and he swiftly introduced a number of important changes to the
Games, including the development of the Victors' Village. He is the main
antagonist of the trilogy of hunger games and he acts as the oppressive ruler of
all the districts and in order to maintain his dictatorial image, he handles all the
arbitrary powers. However, to control the people, he utilizes the Hunger Games
as a tool, giving them just enough desire to survive while also serving as a
constant reminder that the Capitol still has last say in all affairs. He has it down to
a science and understands precisely how to use it to make the biggest impact. In
his attempt to neutralize the threat Katniss Everdeen poses, he probably
overplays his hand, making her a greater threat than she may have been.

EXPLANATION WHY THIS CHARACTER BELONGS TO THIS GROUP:

Snow is a cruel and tough man who is firm, rigid, and thirsty for power. He
is obsessed with preserving the status quo and has no concerns about
committing to violence and intimidation to attain his desires. Moreover, Snow is
classified as one of grade two thinkers because he exploits his great intelligence
and continues to pursue his desire to dominate and rule. He had a horrible habit
of focusing on one problem at a time, believing that if he could just solve one, all
of his other problems would be solved. This "obsessional disposition" was
encoded in his brain, and he worried it would be his undoing if he didn't learn to
manage it. Snow exhibited no remorse for his oppression and bloodthirsty
ambition for power until the very end, often behaving self-righteous and accusing
Katniss of upsetting the existing quo, thinking that for all his dictatorial rhetoric,
he believed the games guaranteed order and control.

6. A famous person: Lebron James

Introduce the character:

LeBron Raymone James, also known as King James, is an American

professional basketball player who was born on December 30, 1984, in Akron,
Ohio. Despite having a challenging upbringing, he was extraordinarily talented
when he was young. As a first-year student at St. Mary High School-St. Vincent,
he played a key role in helping win two straight Division III State Championships.
In addition to being an All-state football player, he was also a basketball star who
attained national prominence. James was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in
the first round of the NBA Draft. In relation to being the youngest player in NBA
history to ever score 40 points during a single game, his achievements include
earning the Rookie of the Year award at an early age. People commended him
for his versatility, and he was featured as a point guard, shooting guard, and
small forward. All of his highlight-reel dunks and no-look passes were met with
rousing applause from his followers. The Cavaliers made the playoffs under his
leadership in his third season. In his sixth season, he nearly single-handedly
guided the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA Finals, but they were defeated in four
games by the San Antonio Spurs. LeBron James, who is regarded as one of the
best all-around players in NBA history, has also won titles with the Miami Heat
(2012 and 2013), Cleveland Cavaliers (2016), and Los Angeles Lakers (2020).
He became the first NBA player who is still playing to earn $1 billion in 2021.

EXPLANATION WHY THIS CHARACTER BELONGS TO THIS GROUP:

Without a doubt, LeBron James is the most divisive athlete in the NBA and
possibly all of sports. For the first time in more than 50 years, James has
appeared in the NBA Finals six years in a row. Although he chose to ruin his
reputation, he had every right to sign with any team he wanted as a free agent.
The country as a whole, however, holds "The King" in the highest regard despite
all of his glory and accomplishments.

Any list of reasons why people despise James must include his direct
viewpoints on the world. Genuine opponents of his controversial beliefs
frequently criticize him for his conflicting worldviews, tendency to make
conclusions before fully considering the information, and regular lack of regret or
retractions when his claims or assertions are proven to be incorrect. In light of
this, he is classified as a grade two thinker. The only reason he set up this entire
circus performance was to satisfy his overinflated ego, which was the only
motivation at all. He often talks too highly of himself, whether it's because of how
smart or important he believes he is.

C. GRADE 1 Thinkers

7. A literary character: Sherlock Holmes

Introduce the character:

Arthur Conan Doyle created the detective fictional character Sherlock

Holmes. His short story collection follows the exploits of the world's most famous
fictional detective (Wilson 2022). Based on his skills of accurate observation and
the slightest of clues, Holmes has an extraordinary capacity to gather evidence.
He solves crimes for everyone from powerful monarchs to impoverished
governesses through logic and deductive reasoning. When Doyle published six
short tales about Sherlock Holmes in Strand magazine in 1891, the public
outrage was so strong that the publication lost 20,000 subscribers. Conan Doyle
was forced to bring him back to life. In fact, the Sherlock Holmes stories have
had such an impact that 58% of respondents in a 2008 poll believed he was a
real person (Wilson 2022).

EXPLANATION WHY THIS CHARACTER BELONGS TO THIS GROUP:

Sherlock has no interest in emotion or any romantic feelings and during

the whole series, Holmes does not show any kind opinion for women in general.
He focuses on logic to the point of showing a cold and dispassionate aura
(making him hard to approach), with his friend Watson being the exception. He
removes emotions and sympathy from everything he does so that he can focus
more on his work. According to E. Martin (n.d.), Holmes has an obsessive
personality that when he gets stuck on an idea, he will have trouble thinking
about anything else.
8. A movie/ series character: Spiderman
Introduce the character:

Spiderman or Peter Parker off mask is an intellectually-gifted student with

many great characteristics and a said intelligence quotient of 250 (Anderson
2019) A well balanced character in terms of brains and brawn, matched with a
physique that can handle great stress and injuries in the body. He is a very
versatile character, being exceptionally good in everything he does particularly in
chemistry and engineering. He was able to come up with his own inventions,
particularly gadgets/devices (e.g., web shooters) he uses for his set-up for
Spiderman. Peter’s intelligence has always been a highlight in his character
personality. However, he is frequently portrayed as underestimating in his school
due to his preoccupation with being Spider-Man.

EXPLANATION WHY THIS CHARACTER BELONGS TO THIS GROUP:

Peter Parker is one of the most intelligent characters in the Marvel

Cinematic Universe. Spiderman has his spider-sense that enables him to think
and act fast. This allows him to navigate, examine his surroundings and is able to
beat his enemies by being familiar with their patterns and projecting their next
attacks. Like the crouching leopard who relies on their instincts on catching their
prey, Spiderman relies on his spider sense. During high school (Spiderman 2012,
played by Andrew Garfield), he was able to decipher a scientific equation made
by his father and a fellow scientist. In the Spiderman series played by Tom
Holland, Tom as Peter Parker joined numerous academic competitions, and he
was also able to solve Doctor Strange’s (Spiderman: No Way Home)
Multiverse/Domain equation using his math and science abilities.

9. A famous person: Elon Musk

Introduce the character:

Well-known business tycoon, African-Canadian-born entrepreneur Elon

Musk was an avid reader who, at the age of nine, resorted to the Encyclopedia
Britannica when he ran out of books. He was an eccentric, shy youngster who
was bullied so badly that he was hospitalized for a week (Blystone 2022). This,
however, did not distract his thirst for knowledge. He taught himself computer
programming skills at the age of ten and by the age of twelve, he created a video
game called Blaster in 1984) and sold it for $500 to a magazine (Phadke, 2022).
Musk's success began in the year 1999 when he and his brother Kimbal Musk
sold their software company, which offered business catalogues to local
newspapers. Musk, at twenty-seven, invested his money in Paypal, a company
that promised to revolutionize how we transfer money. Musk received
approximately over a hundred and sixty million dollars when eBay purchased
PayPal in 2002 (Blystone 2022).

Without having to catch his breath, the young entrepreneur raised his
focus to the skies and founded Space Exploration Technologies or SpaceX
(Tassi et al., n.d.).  with the objective of allowing humanity to reside on other
planets. Two years later, he shifted his innovative ideas to renewable energy,
and in 2004, he founded Tesla. Musk claims that all transport, except rockets,
shall go fully electric. He sees the value of Tesla as a catalyst in that transition
(n.d.). Musk's most risky moment occurred in 2008, when SpaceX suffered its
third setback and Tesla's growing expenditures threatened to bankrupt the
company. Not to mention a TopGear broadcast that Tesla claimed impacted
sales. SpaceX made it owing to a new government contract. Tesla was able to
survive thanks to some last-minute funding and a $465 million government loan
(Gregerson 2022).

EXPLANATION WHY THIS CHARACTER BELONGS TO THIS GROUP:

Elon Musk is considered a Grade 1 thinker because of his many

achievements and contributions in the industry. He once opened up about his
Asperger’s syndrome. Asperger's is a form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, which
is about young people who have difficulty relating to others socially and that their
behavior and thinking are to be adamant and repetitive (Nationwide Children
n.d.). This spectrum made him addicted to reading as mentioned earlier, and to
not be able to experience normal emotions. Also, it is unusual for Elon Musk to
do long form interviews due to his spectrum. Instead, he uses his cognitive ability
into making many innovative businesses mentioned earlier, making him the
richest man in the world (Moskowitz 2022).
