ACTIVITY NO. 1

Is Interior design necessary?

Interior design touches our lives unconsciously through the safety and security it provides,
its visual appearance, and its psychological impact on the user of the space, it fulfills the need of
the occupants to have a safe, efficient, and healthier inhabitation to the space. Moreover, the
functional convenience of spatial planning help improves and holds the space more suited to its
intended purpose and design.

“Our surroundings have an enormous impact on the way we behave and feel, and the role of the
interior designer is more important than ever as we retreat to our homes during COVID-19,”

The pandemic heightens the importance of our interior environment with the well-being
of the inhabitants, furthering the importance of the interior space to the well-being of the user
of the space according to a designer in France, Edolie Ricord. “Interior design can be therapeutic
when it is shared with a client,” she says. “I think that it is essential to create a sense of well-
being in the home, to put together interiors where one can find oneself again, and to create
suitable spaces”. Moreover, she added, “It is not something vital, but it is necessary for well-
being,” with this sense, interior designing taps further into the user experience of the space by
providing the needs and helping the user and the interior build a relationship with each other.

How do you see Interior Design in the future?

With the imminent threat of global warming to the environment, indeed everyone has a
role to play in restoring environmental issues. According to the United Nations Climate change,
2022. In the past years, the earth recorded a record-breaking rise in temperature, moreover, over
the next year there are expected 45% chance of an increase in temperature each succeeding
year, as this continues, scientists believe we are nearing the “tipping point” where solving climate
change will close to be irreversible.

In this view, interior design plays a contributing role in solution-building steps to mitigate
the impending effects of Climate change. It involves sustaining a lasting integrated solution to
design that lowers environmental impact, reduces waste, and lowers pollution both in material
supply and user end experiences.

Interior designing is not just a field where we give service to our client's need for efficiency
and effectiveness in the space. I see interior design in the future holding a step further in
nurturing clients' interests yet bringing significance to the pressing environmental issue the world
is facing. As an interior design student, myself, as a future practitioner in the field of design and
an advocate of sustainable design, I believe that along with creating the visions of our clients,
design should nurture a sustainable future-proof lifestyle and creates a multi-faceted design
purpose.

Even on a small scale, the awareness we translate to design contributes to the solution
the world needs. Together with other allied professionals, we help build a foundation for a
greener future for the next generation.
