Autonomous Learner Model.

Betts created the Autonomous Learner Model to promote gifted students' growth
toward independent, self-directed learning. The goal of this paradigm is to transfer learning
power away from the instructor as a "knowledge dispenser" and provide it to the students.
The Autonomous Learner Model (ALM) focuses on learner differentiated options where
they are in control of their learning and teachers merely act as facilitator wherein, they provide
opportunities for the students to be autonomous. This model is divided into five major
dimensions namely: Orientation, Individual Development, Enrichment Activities, Seminars, and
In-depth Study. Each dimension provides opportunities for the gifted students to explore their
individual capabilities and nourish that to their fullest potential.
This model teaches students how to find information on their own. ALM teaches
students a multitude of skills that will help them navigate the increasingly complicated world of
education. Responsibility, positive self-esteem, decision-making and problem-solving abilities,
interpersonal skills, critical and creative thinking skills, and a love for areas of study that interest
them will all be developed via ALM.
