What I Need to Know

This module is about the animal cell. Animal cells are the building blocks
of animal life. These cells make up our bodies and other forms of animals. As
you go over this module, you will learn that animal cells have different parts
which contain many types of specialized organelles that help in carrying out
various functions of the body.

After going through this module, you are expected to differentiate plant
and animal cells according to presence or absence of certain organelles. (S7LT-
IIe-4)

Specifically, you are also expected to:

1) identify the organelles of an animal cell and their functions; and

2) construct your own 3D model of an animal cell.
What I Know

I. Directions: Choose the letter of the best answer. Write it in your science
activity notebook.

1. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. All cells have a cell wall. C. All cells contain a chloroplast.
B. All cells contain a centriole. D. All cells have a cell membrane.

2. Which of the following organelles can be found in a plant cell but NOT in an
animal cell?
A. Chloroplast C. Nucleus
B. Mitochondria D. Vacuole

3. Which of the following pairs shows a protein-manufacturing and protein-

digesting organelles?
A. Chloroplast- Golgi body C. Ribosomes-Lysosomes
B. Nucleus-Ribosomes D. Vacuole-Plasma membrane

4. Why are lysosomes considered as the “Suicide Bags” of the cell?

A. They digest damage cell parts.
B. They support and protect the cell.
C. They pump materials that enter the cell.
D. They transport materials from one cell to another.

5. Which of the following best describes the function of centrioles?

A. It manufactures proteins in animal cells.
B. It transfers smaller cells during cell division in plant cells.
C. It produces small proteins in the cells of all living organisms
D. It organizes the microtubules during cell division in animal cells.

II. Directions: Label the following parts of the animal cell. Choose your answer
from the word box. Write your answers in your science activity notebook.

THE ANIMAL CELL

What’s In

In the previous module, you learned about plant cells. Plant cells have a
cell wall, as well as a plasma membrane. In plants, the cell wall surrounds the
cell membrane. This gives the plant cell its unique rectangular shape. You have
also learned that plant cells have chloroplast which contains the pigment
chlorophyll that gives plants their green color. In this module, you will study about
animal cells, its parts and function.

Activity 1: Complete me!

Directions: Complete the words below by filling in the missing letters. Write the
complete word in your science activity note book

WORD: CLUE:

1._UCL_US It controls all the activities of the cell.

2. CY_OPL_ _M It is where all the organelle is located.
3. V_CUOL_ It holds water, food and waste materials.
4. CH_ORO_LAS_ It is the site of photosynthesis in plant cells.
5. CELL WA_ _ It provides support, protection, and shape to
the plant cell.

What’s New

Activity 2: THINK
Directions: Based on the illustration below, fill in the circle with words
that you can think of to form a simple concept map on animal cell. The first one is
done for you. Write your answer in your science activity notebook.

What is It

What Is an Animal Cell?

An animal cell is a eukaryotic cell, meaning it contains nucleus and

membrane-bound little organs called organelles, which performs different
functions inside the cell.
Animal cells are found within every animal. Animal cells are of different
sizes. The largest known animal cell is the ostrich egg, which can stretch over
5.1 inches across and weigh about 1.4 kilograms. This is in complete opposite to
the nerve cells in the human body which is too small to be visible without the use
of a microscope.
Animal cells have also irregular shapes. They are different from other cells
because they do not have cell wall, which allows them to take on different
shapes.

The different animal cell organelles, along with its coined name (hashtag) and
functions, are as follows:

 It sends signals to the cells
to grow, mature, divide, and

 It controls the movement of

 It is the source of most body

 It sorts, packages and

 It helps in modifying the
lipids and proteins which
have been built in the

 It contains digestive
enzymes that can digest
foreign substances and

 It helps cells divide or make

 It manufactures proteins.
Ribosomes #The Factory  Mostly, ribosomes are
attached to the endoplasmic
reticulum while some
scattered freely in the
cytoplasm.

Endoplasmic #The Roads  It transports proteins to the

Reticulum different parts of the cell.
Two types:
a.) Rough ER a. It has rough appearance
because it has attached
ribosomes. It helps make
proteins that is why it has
ribosomes.
b.) Smooth ER
b. It has no attached
ribosomes. It makes fats or
lipids.
 It stores food, water,

materials in the cell.
 It is smaller than the vacuole

 It consists of a jelly-like

Activity 3: Think and Write

Directions: Answer the questions below. Write your answer in your science
activity notebook.
1. Why are lysosomes called the “Suicide Bags” of the cell?
2. If you were asked to give plasma membrane a coined name, what would it be?

What I Can Do

Activity 4: Have Fun!

Directions: Make your own model of an animal cell at home. Your model should
be three dimensional (3-D). It means the animal cell model is not flat. It must
appear circular, seemed real and natural. Your model must show the accurate
representation of all the organelles. Each organelle must be labelled with its
name. A description of the function or job for each organelle must also be seen in
the model.
Use your imagination! Use any material available at
home. You may also use recycled materials. There is no
need to spend money to complete your model. Be creative
and have fun!
