A Detailed Lesson Plan

In Science for Grade 8 Students

Prepared by: Val Daryl Anhao
February 2, 2018
OBJECTIVES
CONTENT STANDARDS
The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
 how cells divide to produce new cells
 meiosis as one of the processes producing genetic variations of the Mendelian
Pattern of Inheritance
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
The learners should be able to:
 report on the importance of variation in plant and animal breeding
LEARNING COMPETENCY
 compare mitosis and meiosis, and their role in the cell-division cycle
S8LT-IVd-16
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE
At the end of a 60-minute period, the Grade Eight learners will be able to:
 Identify the different phases of cell cycle.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
CELL DIVISION
A. References
PDF: Science Grade 8 K-12 Learner’s Guide/Teacher’s Guide Module
B. Materials
Images, Laptop, speaker, marker, masking tape, visual aids
C. Ideas
Actively dividing cells pass through a series of stages known collectively as the cell cycle: two
gap phases (G1 and G2); an S (for synthesis) phase, in which the genetic material is duplicated;
and an M phase, in which mitosis partitions the genetic material and the cell divides.
Interphase- The G1,S2, and G2 phases together are known as interphase. The phase of the cell
cycle in which a typical cell spends most of its life. During this phase, the cell copies its
DNA in preparation for mitosis.
 G1 phase- Metabolic changes prepare the cell for division. At a certain point - the
restriction point - the cell is committed to division and moves into the S
phase.
 S phase- DNA synthesis replicates the genetic material. Each chromosome now
consists of two sister chromatids.
 G2 phase- Metabolic changes assemble the cytoplasmic materials necessary for
mitosis and cytokinesis.
D. Skills Process

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
A. Preliminary Activites “Good morning Sir.”
“Good morning class.”
“How are you today class?” “We are good Sir”
“Alright, good to hear”
“Settle down now because I will check your
attendance.”
B. Review Lesson “Parts and functions of the cell”
“Class, what have we discussed last meeting?”

“What is the function of mitochondria? “Act as the powerhouse of the cell.”

“Very Good! You really understand our lesson.”

C. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
Before we proceed class, let’s have first another
group activity. The class will be group into five.
So, I have here class 4 empty pie graphs. One for
each group. And 4 markers, one for each group also.
There are arrows in this empty graph. And I have “Yes sir.”
here also the right words that is needed, all you have
to do is to label the empty graphs with terms that you
think is comes first for the right sequence. Is that
clear class?
I want each group to cooperate and help each other in
deciding what words you should put in those empty “Yes sir.”
graphs. I will give 3 minutes for each group to locate
the words and encircle it
The group that will locate the most number of correct
words will win and will get additional points. Is
everything clear class?

 G1 Phase
 G2 Phase
 S Phase
 M Phase/Cell Division
2. Presentation
“We will be discussing about the phases of cell cycle
as well as the events that happens in every phase. “
(Presentation of objective)
Objective: (Students read the objective)
The learners should be able to:
 Identify the different phases of cell
cycle.
“Class, please read the objective.”
“Thank you.”
(Students will answer)
3. Discussion
“This morning, we will learn the about the Cell (Students will answer)
Cycle”
Do you think that your answers class are correct?
Does the cell undergo mitosis first other than G1
phase?
Well, we will find out if you have correctly sequence
the phases of cell cycle after our discussion class. Is
that clear?
“S phase, G1 phase, G2 phase and M
Just like the caterpillar before it turns into a butterfly, phase sir.”
cell also undergo cell cycle.
All of these terms that you have try to answer
comprises the phases of the cell cycle class. “Nucleus is the one that controls the
activities inside the cell sir.”
Again, read the words in the board.
Good! This are the phases of cell cycle. Is that clear
class?

Before we continue, does anyone of you remember “Yes sir.”

what is nucleus?
“Nucleus is composed of Chromatin,
Very good. Nucleus class is like the principal of a nucleolus, nuclear membrane and
school that controls the activities inside the campus. the DNA sir.”

I gave you an assignment yesterday right? Did you

made your assignment class? “Deoxyribonucleic acid sir.”

Good. So what are the the parts of a nucleus?

(Students will pay attention to the
image)
That’s right. I want you all to focus on this word
DNA. Or what does DNA mean class?

Alright. The DNA class looks like this.

(Shows a picture of a DNA)

DNA is the blueprint of life. This DNA molecules “It looks like a long straw or a rope
class are found inside the nucleus. sir.”
Take a look at this picture class.
(Shows a picture of a chromosome)

What does its shaped looked like?

This thread-like structure is what we called the “Yes sir.”

Chromosomes class.

This one strand is what is called a chromatid. So
