Instructions: Give (3) three reasons why the documentary, Raiders of the Sulu Sea, is
important to the grand narrative of the Philippine History.
1. The documentary Raiders of the Sulu Sea is a proof that digital media can tell part
of our history not known by the many. This documentary was able to enlighten the
Filipino people about the struggle for power over the coastal territories in southern
Mindanao between the Spaniards and Moro raiders. The raids was planned and
authorized by the Sultans during those times due to the Spanish policy that wishes
to stop the raids, at the same time monopolize the trading system and introduce
Christianity on the natives.

2. The documentary was able to highlight and prove the existence of maritime
civilization during those time. Native dwellers of the island were mainly fisherman
and boat builders. Boat building is part of or culture that is slowly vanishing on this
modern world, therefore the documentary was able to highlight hoping for its
revival. In addition, slave trading was also emphasized because it was considered
as part of the trading business in Southeast Asia, thus slave trading during those
times was legal.

3. The documentary was able to fill a gap in the Philippine history. It was able to
narrate in detail the long -forgotten scenarios of what really happen during the
attack on the Fort Pilar as well as the scenarios taking place before the attack. It
was able to convey how the three native tribes of the Sulu group of islands, the
Balangingi-Samal, Ilanuns and Sultanate of Sulu, were able to organize a battalion
of hundred ships with thousands of men fighting for their cause. They wanted the
Spaniards to get out of their land so that they can freely continue their economic
activities especially slave trading. This is a part of the Philippine history that was
not commonly taught in various schools across the country, thus making this
documentary was really helpful in telling a vital piece of information about the
Philippine history.
