EXERCISE 3 (22/4/20)

Due: Wednesday, 29/3/20

INSTRUCTION

This exercise is for the following topics:

 Quadratic Inequalities
 Angle of Elevation and Depression
 Bearing

You can scan (using computer) or snap (using handphone) your hand-written solution
and submit your work in Google Classroom platform.

QUESTIONS

1. The graph of 𝑦 = 𝑝𝑥 − 4𝑥 + 2, where p is a constant, does not intersect the

𝑥-axis. Find the range of the values of 𝑝.

2. Find the range of the values of x for 5𝑥 − 11𝑥 − 12 ≤ 𝑥(2𝑥 + 5).

3. The diagram shows two vertical

flagpoles on a horizontal plane.
The angle of elevation of 𝑅 from
𝑃 is 38°. Calculate the angle of
depression of 𝑆 from 𝑃.

4. Three ships, 𝑃, 𝑄 and 𝑅, stop at the sea level such that the bearing of 𝑃 from
𝑄 is 030°, the bearing of 𝑅 from 𝑄 is 130° and 𝑃𝑄 = 𝑄𝑅 = 5 km.
(a) Find the bearing of 𝑃 from 𝑅.
(b) Ship 𝑅 sails to ship 𝑃 using the shortest route. Find the shortest
distance of ship 𝑅 from ship 𝑄 on its journey to ship 𝑃.

[Answers: 𝑝 > 2; − ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 6; 59.81°; 350°, 3.214 km]
