Sludge Test:
Qualitative Evaluation:
When the emulsion test is done, take each tube of the 3, and filter the content through 100 mesh stainless-
steel sieve. Wash the sieve with warm water “alternatively, if emulsion was seen on top of the screen, use
fluid of water and 5% Mutual Solvent S282 to wash the sieve”.
Report visually if sludge was seen on top of the mesh. Take pictures and include in the report.

Quantitative evaluation:
Filter the tubes through Whatman#41 filter paper “possibly a vacuum pump need to be used”. Report the
solids left on the paper as sludge:
o Create a filter paper blank as follows:
 Measure the weight of a filter paper
 Filter 50 ml of oil through the filter paper
 Dry the paper in the oven for 1 hour at 220 deg F.
 Weight the dried filter paper. Blank is the weight increase of the filter paper
o Measure the weight of a Whatman#41 filter paper
o The contents of the bottle are filtered through the Whatman #41 filter.
o The filter is dried in an oven at 220°F, and the mass of the sludge retained on the filter
is recorded
Mass of sludge = mass of filter with sludge – mass of filter paper - blank.

Sludge retained as solids on the filter paper means the acid recipe needs to be changed to avoid the sludge.

Emulsion and sludge procedures should be done on both Live and Spent Acid for all fluids to be used on the
treatment.
Deviations:
- Our standard tests will include 1,000 ppm of ferric iron “as Ferric Chloride” in the live acid. Note
that Operators may request different concentration of Ferric. Please confirm with Client prior to
do the tests. Recommendation: if a tubing pickle will be performed prior to acid job, use 1,000
ppm. If no tubing pickle is planned, then test for at least 2,000 ppm Fe+++.
