MODULE 4- WEATHERING AND SOIL-FORMING ROCKS AND MINERALS

LEARNING TASK
Trace the resulting soil from the identified soil forming rock and mineral.
Purpose of this lesson

This lesson will provide an understanding of the composition and

properties of various rock necessary in assessing the location, quality, and
quantity of soil resources both above and underneath the surface; in rating
the suitability of a soil for agricultural purposes; and in predicting soil
types in areas where no direct data is available.

At the end of this laboratory exercise, you are expected to:

1. Provide distinction among minerals in terms of color, hardness, reaction to acid, and
their contribution to soil.
2. Differentiate the rocks and minerals in terms of color, mineral constituents, and their
contribution to soil.
3. The common rocks and minerals that constitute the parent material of some
important soils in the Philippines.

Lesson coverage
This lesson covers the following points:
 Rocks vs minerals Rock cycle
 Characteristic features of rocks and minerals
 Mineral provided by rocks and minerals

Activity . What is produced? Rock Cycle emphasizes the conversion of igneous or sedimentary
rock into another type of rock, name of rock produced given a parent rock as listed below when it
undergoes weathering or any form of transformation.

Sedimentary / Igneous Rock Transformed into

Marble
Limestone

Quartz
Sandstone

Slate
Shale

Gneiss
Granite

and how to describe and identify minerals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5toDnX5AoE

Mineral is an inorganic solid with defined chemical composition and crystallization that is made by
the nature itself. Combining 2 or more mineral produce a rock, because of weathering. It can be
identified by its texture, color, hardness and composition.
