SAFETY SECTION
MONTHLY REPORT
MARCH 2014
1.0 AIRSIDE SAFETY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
Two (2) taxiway apron incursions, one (1) aircraft damages caused by an airport facility and
eleven (11) wildlife hazard incidents were recorded for March 2014. Also the Year-To-Date
(YTD) statistics on bird strikes, recorded 0.33 bird strikes per 1000 movements as compared to
0.20 bird strikes per 1000 movements for the same period 2013.
The following measures should be put in place to reduce the hazards identified for the month
under review.
1. Need to enhance security around the airside to prevent breeches that can lead to
preventable incidents.
2. Overgrown weeds and other bird and wildlife attractants should be cleared regularly
3. Increase bird patrols especially around the Touch Down Zone of runway 21
4. Construction of Dwarf fence wall on the South Eastern portion of the airport should be
expedited to prevent access to the airside by wildlife.
8. STOP BARS 4 0%
11. PAPI 03 0%
Efforts should be made to provide temporal lighting for all operational areas with defective
lights captured under KIA Phase III works.
Markings should be provided to indicate emergency vehicle holding positions at the new RFFS
station. This is to ensure that emergency vehicles do not intrude the runway safety areas whilst
holding position.
The general airside signage at KIA does not meet the standard and recommended practices of
the CAA regulations. The KIA Signage plan under the Phase III project should be implemented as
soon as possible.
4.0 CONCLUSION
The identified safety deficiencies on the airside need to be addressed as soon as possible to
improve safety at KIA.
