TUTORIAL 1

QUESTION 1
(a) Figure Q1(a) shows a regulated power supply circuit with unregulated output voltage (𝑉𝑉𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 ) varies from 15V to 25V.

(i) Sketch the waveforms of input voltage (𝑉𝑉𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 ), transformer secondary voltage (𝑉𝑉𝑆𝑆 ), unregulated output voltage (𝑉𝑉𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 ) and voltage
across 𝑅𝑅𝐿𝐿 .

(ii) Derive the equation for regulated output voltage (𝑉𝑉𝑜𝑜 ).

(iii) When the unregulated output voltage (𝑉𝑉𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 ) is 18V, the input current (𝐼𝐼𝑆𝑆 ) is 0.25A. If 𝑅𝑅𝐿𝐿 = 100Ω, 𝑉𝑉𝑍𝑍 = 5.1𝑉𝑉, and 𝑅𝑅1 = 200Ω,
find the power dissipated by transistor 𝑄𝑄1. Assume that the collector current in transistor 𝑄𝑄2 is negligible. Choose also a
reasonable value and power rating for 𝑅𝑅𝑆𝑆 .

(b) Design a regulated power supply with an adjustable output voltage which includes ONE (1) operational amplifier (op-amp), ONE (1)
transistor and ONE (1) overload protection circuit with the following specifications:
• Adjustable output voltage varies from approximately 4.7V to 10V
• Maximum output current is 0.5A
• 𝑉𝑉𝑟𝑟(𝑝𝑝−𝑝𝑝) ≤ 0.1𝑉𝑉𝑜𝑜
• Power supplied by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is 240𝑉𝑉𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟 at 50𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻

• Consider all components to be ideal
You also need to specify the turns ratio of the transformer designed, specify which zener diode that can be used based on the datasheet in
Appendix A and provide reason(s) for your selection.

QUESTION 2

Design a complete power supply system which consists of Utility Voltage Line in
Malaysia, Transformer, Full-wave Rectifier, Filter, Regulator and Load. In this case,
the capacitor filter is 15µF is connected to RC stage (R=500Ω, C=10 µF) and the
regulator is a basic shunt regulator circuit with R=120 Ω and Zener diode of 12 V.
The peak of rectified voltage is 60 V, the transistor draws 20mA current at collector,
the load is 1 kΩ and the percentage of the ripple at the RC section is 2.5%. Analyze
all the dc and ac components including the necessary current in the circuit.

QUESTION 3

Redesigned the circuit in Q2 by using an IC regulator to produce ± 12V. The peak

rectified voltage need to be reduced to safe operating level. Student should show how
to reduce the peak rectified voltage.
