LESSON # 4

Lesson # 4 - Interculturalism
Wednesday, June 9th

Hello everyone!

Welcome to a new lesson!

In Lesson # 3 we read "The British", a poem which clearly describes what a

multicultural society looks like (or... should look like?).

In today´s lesson we are going to focus on INTERCULTURALISM and some of

the issues directly associated with it. To do so, we´ll be reading a short story
called Forbidden Clothes.

But before you start reading the short story, I´d like
to share some ideas in relation to the analysis of the
poem THE BRITISH, by Benjamin Zephaniah. I
am sure you have already completed the activities
in lesson # 3,  but I guess you might also need some
guidance for the analysis.

So, I have recorded some audios which may help you make sense of the
poem:

The short story you are going to read for next week is called FORBIDDEN
CLOTHES. This story was written by Jamila Gavin, who was born in India in
1941 but grew up in England. She has always said that her writing reflects the
multicultural world in which she lives.

The story includes some reflexion activities which we will try to discuss in our next
meeting.

READ the story at least twice! Otherwise, you won´t be able to fully

understand Do not worry about the activities you´ll find along the story. They are
meant to help readers understand and analyze the story, but you do not need to
complete them.

FORUM ACTIVITY
How did you like this story? Did you
expect this ending? Why? Why not?
What were your expectations for
Nasreen?

Use your answers to these questions to
WRITE A SHORT PARAGRAPH. Then
share your ideas and feelings with the class
on the FORUM for lesson # 4.
