LESSON # 5

Lesson # 5 - The First World War

Wednesday, June 16th.

""Welcome to LESSON # 5!
In this lesson, we´re going to travel back to Europe, beginning of the 20th century, in order to
understand the reasons why the Great War broke out in Europe. We´ll also learn about the long
causes of the war, as well as the two big alliances involved, what it was like to be a soldier in W
and how the war came to an end.

It sounds a lot, doesn´t it? So, let´s get startied....

The First World War involved all major powers and indeed all European
states except Spain, the Netherlands, the three Scandinavian countries and
Switzerland. What is more, troops from the world overseas were, often for the
frst time, sent to fight and work outside their own regions. Canadians fought in
France, Australians and New Zealanders forged their national consciousness
on a peninsula in the Aegean, and more significantly, the United States sent its
men to fight in Europe, thus determining the shape of twentieth-century history.

Europe in 1914

Go through these preliminary

questions and guess how much you
already know...
1. When and where did it take place?
2. How long did it last?
3. How many countries were involved?
4. Which event precipitated the declaration of war?
5. All in all, how many soldiers fought in the war?
6. How many people were killed or injured during the war? And after it?
7. Which weapons were used at that time?
8. Which famous "treaty" was signed after WW1?

   WATCH the first video...

          As you watch, check your
answers to the initial questions.
        VIDEO 1

Some interesting facts about WW1....

WATCH the video again and spot at least 3 or 4  "interesting facts" which may

have called your attention in the video.

TAKE down notes!

Ok, but.....WHAT REALLY CAUSED THE DEVASTATING FIRST WORLD

WAR?

What had been going on in Europe before 1914?

WATCH video 2 to discover the real

causes...
As you watch the video, take down notes. Remember to keep a record of
everything          you do!

        VIDEO 2

After watching the video:

On your PORTFOLIO, make up a chart showing the long-term causes as they are

explained in the video. Then add any key information related to this from your study
material.

This third video shows you how Europe changed as a consequence of WW1

Now, to wrap up today´s lesson, and to relax a little bit, I´d like to share with you
a song by Paul McCartney which directly addresses the First World War.

VIDEO CLIP:

"Pipes of Peace"
🎧 Listen to the song and go over the lyrics below. Which specific event does
the song refer to? What is the message behind this song?

PIPES OF PEACE
Paul McCartney

I light a candle to our love

In love our problems disappear
But all in all, we'll soon discover
That one and one is all we long to hear

All around the world

Little children being born to the world
Got to give them all we can till the war is won
Then will the work be done?

Help them to learn (help them to learn)

Songs of joy instead of" burn, baby, burn" (burn, baby, burn)
Let us show them how to play the pipes of peace
Play the pipes of peace

Help me to learn
Songs of joy instead of "burn, baby, burn"
Won't you show me how to play (how to play)
The pipes of peace? (pipes of peace)
Play the pipes of peace (ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)

What do you say? (do you say?)

Will the human race be run in a day? (in a day?)
Or will someone save this planet we're playing on?
Is it the only one?
What are we going to do?

Help them to see (help them to see)

That the people here are like you and me (like you and me)
Let us show them how to play (how to play)
The pipes of peace (pipes of peace)
Play the pipes of peace (ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)

I light a candle to our love

In love our problems disappear
But all in all, we soon discover
That one and one is all we long to hear
