INTRODUCTION
The standards listed in the Table in § 10 specify the dimensional and geometric tolerances (shape,
position, orientation and run-out) allowed for features shown on drawings without explicit tolerance
requirements.

Tolerance of functionally important features must be explicitly indicated on drawings even if it

corresponds to the requirements stated in these standards.

This standard establishes four degrees of accuracy for linear and angular dimension tolerances. The
choice of one of these degrees must take the accuracy normally adopted in workshops into account.

Lower geometric tolerances (if necessary) or higher tolerances (if allowed) must be indicated one by

one according to Std. 01376.

ITALIAN EDITION IS NOT PRESENT OR NOT UPDATED, THE ENGLISH EDITION IS THE VALID REFERENCE.
The tolerances required in this standard may be adopted for finished parts obtained by chip removal or
by plastic deformation providing no other tolerance standards for specific production processes exists.

Application for parts obtained in different manner is possible after ascertaining that the degree of
accuracy complies with the requirements of this standard.
Required tolerances apply if this standard is quoted on drawings or in respective documentation.

Other tolerances established in other standards, if any, will only apply if they are quoted on drawings
or in respective documentation. The standard with higher tolerance will apply in case of doubt
concerning linear or angular dimensions.

Supplementary requirements are established for coupling in this standard.

Geometric tolerances do not apply in the following cases:

a) parts for which geometric tolerances are indicated separately

b) parts for which other geometric tolerances are indicated on drawings or in respective
documentation
c) parts which are not made by stock removal as shown by an indication for semi-finished parts
on drawings.

Geometric tolerances for any line and any surface are not specified in this standard.

Tolerances for linear and angular dimensions apply in the following cases:

d) external and internal linear dimensions, thrusts, diameters, distances (see Table 1); curvature
radii and chamfer heights (inclinations)
(see Table 2)
e) angular dimensions (see Table 3) both indicated or normally not indicated (e.g. 90 angles or
regular polygonal angles)
f) linear and angular dimensions which are obtained by machining joined parts
g) linear and angular dimensions of mechanical parts joined by welding.

Tolerances for linear and angular dimensions do not apply in the following cases:

h) linear and angular dimensions for which tolerances are indicated one by one

i) linear and angular dimensions for which standards related to other general tolerances are
indicated on drawings or in other documentation (see page 2)
j) auxiliary dimensions indicated in brackets (UNI 3975 / 4820 / 3974 / 73)
k) theoretical dimensions indicated in a box (Std. 01376)
l) circumference subdivision angular dimensions
m) right angles between axes crossing in absence of explicit angular dimension (90)

2.1
GENERIC TOLERANCES FOR PRESSED STEEL/COLD ROLLED PARTS (ANNEX 1) AND HOT
ROLLED PARTS (ANNEX 2) NOT INDICATED ON DRAWINGS

All tolerances which are not indicated on drawings are generic.

The values of these tolerances are indicated below and apply to the following families:

1- part or complete part with standard components indicated

2- assemblies formed by several parts in item 1 made integral to each other by welding, clinching

or by means of threaded fasteners.

Note: In order to avoid misunderstandings, e.g. by suppliers engaged in sourcing technical

analyses, it is important to note that the division into two families of parts indicated above
encompasses all types and that all analysed components must be referred to either family. This
distinction is prevalent over the wording in the title box, such as part, complete part, assembly,
intermediate assembly etc. The use of this wording is persistent because it is useful for collocating
the parts in specific FGA production process steps.

DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCES FOR FEATURES WITHOUT TOLERANCE INDICATION AND FOR
LINEAR AND ANGULAR DIMENSIONS

The dimensional tolerances required in the standards listed in § 10 do not apply to boxed dimensions
(Std. 01376) and to the auxiliary dimensions given by way of example only.

They additionally apply to dimensions obtained from drawing dimensions determined by calculations
or from records.

Tolerances are specified according to final machining of the features which delimit the dimensioned
feature.

If the dimension is delimited by two surfaces obtained with final machining for which different
tolerances are required (according to these standards), the required tolerance is that of the machining
degree with the broadest tolerance for both surfaces. For example, in case of nominal dimension
between a rough cast surface and a milled surface, the tolerance for rough cast surfaces is
determined for both.

3.2
Angular dimensions
Tolerances for angular dimensions apply regardless of
the actual dimensions of the part, i.e. the angular
deviations must appear for parts in both maximum
material condition and for parts in minimum material
condition.
Dimensional deviations do not limit shape errors of sides
or surfaces which form an angle.
Angular deviations are given (see Table 3) according to
the nominal dimension of the shorter side.

NOTE: The orientation of lines or planes forming the

angle in parts with shape errors is that of the ideal lines
or planes as defined in Std. 01376.

4
GEOMETRIC TOLERANCES FOR FEATURES WITHOUT TOLERANCE INDICATION
AND FOR LINEAR AND ANGULAR DIMENSIONS

Shape tolerances of any line or surface are not considered suitable for a general tolerance
requirement therefore must be specified one by one on drawings when necessary according to Std.
01376 (or specific standards).
Position tolerances assigned considering theoretically exact dimensions (which are therefore boxed)
must be specified on drawings according to Std. 01376.
The rule that all tolerances (dimensional or geometric) are mutually independent applies.
Consequently, geometric tolerances may still be used when the part is at the maximum dimensional
tolerance limit (rectilinearity, planarity, orthogonality etc.) providing it is not a coupling because in the
latter case the envelope condition must be respected and the maximum material principle always
applies.

THIS DOCUMENT MUST NOT BE REPRODUCED OR CIRCULATED TO THIRD PARTIES WITHOUT PRIOR WRITTEN

the ideal surface determined by the maximum and minimum limit values.
Furthermore, the maximum material principle binds the geometric tolerance value to the actual
dimension of the part in a coupling (Std. 01377).
Geometric tolerances apply regardless of real dimensions of the machined part. All tolerances must be
respected independently.
Geometric tolerances may be used also for parts with maximum material dimensions.
The limiting envelope condition additionally applies to couplings.

4.1
Rectilinearity and planarity
Rectilinearity and planarity tolerances are shown in Table 4.
CONFIDENTIAL

The nominal dimension to be considered for choosing the tolerance value is the length of the
concerned line for rectilinearity tolerances or the length of the longer side of the surface or diameter of
the circular surface for planarity tolerances.

4.2
Circularity
Circularity tolerance is equal to the numeric value of the diameter tolerance but must not exceed the
radial run-out values indicated in Table 6.

4.3
Cylindricity
Cylindricity tolerances are not established.
Envelope conditions according to Fig.1 and 2 thus apply for cylindrical couplings .
The surface of the machined part for shafts must not exceed (envelope conditions) the ideal geometric
shape (cylinder) of the maximum dimension.
Furthermore, the real dimension must not be smaller than the minimum dimension in any point.

NOTE: The maximum dimension of the shaft must be checked using a go-no-go ring gauge.

Parallelism
Parallelism tolerance is equal to the rectilinear and planarity tolerance values (see § 4.1) or to the
tolerance of the distance between parallel lines or surfaces whichever is higher.

The longest of the two parallel parts is taken as reference part. Either part may be taken as reference
if they both have the same nominal dimension. The parallelism tolerance must be separately indicated
according to Std. 01376 if these considerations on reference parts are not applicable.

The envelopment condition according to Fig. 3 and 4 applies for couplings with flat surfaces. In a
particular coupling with parallel external surfaces (similarly to the shaft in Fig. 1) the maximum
dimension of these surfaces must not be larger than the ideal geometric shape in any point (envelope
conditions). Furthermore, the real dimension must not be smaller than the minimum dimension in any
point.

In a particular coupling with parallel internal surfaces (similarly to the hole in Fig. 2) the minimum
dimension of these surfaces must not be smaller than the ideal geometric shape in any point
(envelope conditions).
Furthermore, the real dimension must not be larger than the maximum dimension in any point.

Symmetry
Tolerances for symmetric (not revolution) parts are shown in Table 5. These revolutions apply also if
only one of the symmetric parts is a revolution part and the other is not.
For symmetry tolerances, the longer part is the reference part in all cases in which the parts may be
placed into mutual relationship.
Each part may be taken as reference if they both have the same nominal dimension.

INDICATION OF GEOMETRIC TOLERANCES ON DRAWINGS
The following geometric tolerances are defined respectively by quoting this standard on drawings:
- S degree for mechanical part drawings
- T degree for body part drawings
The following note must be written on drawings if a different degree of accuracy from that indicated
above is required:
Example: "Geometric tolerances for features without indications of tolerance - Std.
01444 - R degree of accuracy".
The required degree of accuracy is indicated by a specific note if different degrees of accuracy are
required for some geometric tolerances on any one part:
Example: "Geometric tolerances for features without indications of tolerance - Std.
01444 - R degree of planarity".

6
INDICATION OF DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCES ON DRAWINGS
The following linear and angular dimensional tolerances are defined respectively by quoting this
standard on drawings:
- A degree - (Table 1): for centre-to-centre distances (where centre-to-centre distance is that
between two axes and also the distance between an axis and an edge)
- B degree - (Table 1): for linear, internal, external dimensions, thrusts, diameters and distances
- B degree - (Table 2): for curvature radii and chamfer heights
- B degree - (Table 3): for angular dimensions
- C degree - (Table 1 and 3): for mechanical parts assembled by welding on linear and angular
dimensions concerned by the welding.
The geometric tolerances required in § 3 must always be specified with a specific note indicating the
type of tolerance and degree of accuracy:
Example: "Dimensional tolerances for dimensions without tolerance indication - Std.
01444, linear and angular dimensions, D degree".
The required degree of accuracy is indicated in a specific note on drawings if different degrees of
accuracy are required for the linear and angular dimension tolerances on any one part.
Example: "Dimension tolerances without tolerance indication - Std. 01444: Centre-to-
centre distance B degree - Linear dimensions C degree - Curvature radii C
degree - Angular C degree".

CLASSIFICATION OF FEATURES
The requirements contained in Spec. 9.01102 and Spec. 9.01102/10 apply for feature classification.
Consequently, the concerned feature is classified in "Secondary B" class in all cases in which the
allowed tolerance is inferred from this standard.
A different "class of importance", if needed, must be indicated on drawings also if the allowed
tolerance is equal to that specified in this standard.
