7. Evaluation Methods
7.1 Common evaluation conditions
7.1.1 Standard atmospheric conditions for testing Unless otherwise specified, the
standard temperature shall be 20 °C, class 5 (20 ± 5 °C) and the standard humidity shall be
65 %, class 20 (65 ± 20 %), as specified in JIS Z 8703. However, the parts whose
temperature conditions are to be specified shall be tested at the designated temperature.
Remark The atmospheric conditions for testing difficult to keep at standard ones shall be
described in the report on the evaluation results, if any.
7.1.2 Types of test pieces The test pieces shall be obtained from completed products (3).
For weatherability test or light fastness test, the test pieces shall be cut off from the completed
products so as to meet the dimensions of the tester panel. In this case, the gate part and weld
part shall be taken as samples with high priority.
Note (3) The completed products mean molded components, including secondary-processed
or compound ones. Similarly, the skin area of cloth, carpet, unwoven fabric, vinyl
and leather shall be tested using completed products. (Excluding the skin of seat)
7.1.3 Fixing condition of test piece To run the test specified in Table 10, the test piece
4
shall be fixed on a test stand or a fixture ( ) under the same conditions as in a vehicle
(hereinafter referred to as “simulated on-vehicle condition”).
Note (4) The test stand or the fixture shall be a cut body or jig. Use of the cut body or the
jig shall be indicated on Specification Drawing.

7.1.4 Conditioning of test pieces The test piece shall, as a rule, be a product left
untouched for over 24 h after production, and shall be kept in the standard conditions
specified in section 7.1.1 for over 1 h before the tests.
7.2 Rigidity (Symbol St)
7.2.1 Purpose To evaluate, from the viewpoint of appearance, both the rigidity of parts
themselves in a simulated on-vehicle condition and the parts when assembled.
7.2.2 Test temperature/humidity The test temperature and humidity shall be, unless
otherwise specified, 20 ± 2 °C and 65 ± 10 %, respectively.

14 - h
MES PW PT001

7.2.3 Pressure jig 3 types of pressure jigs as shown in Table 11 shall be used,
depending upon the parts.

7.2.4 Test method Evaluate the test piece on its deflection and appearance in a
simulated on-vehicle condition. Unless otherwise specified, measure the deflection in the
middle or at the point with low rigidity between the fixing parts of the test piece, with the jig
shown in Fig. 1. Where the high-temperature evaluation is required, place the test piece in a
thermostatic chamber conditioned to the specified temperature for the specified hours, and
measure its deflection at the point indicated on Specification Drawing at the specified
temperature.

7.3.1 Purpose To inspect changes in shapes and dimensions, appearance and color
arising when parts are held at the prescribed temperature.
7.3.2 Test temperature The test temperature shall be as shown in Table 12, depending
upon the parts.

7.3.3 Test method Place the test piece in a simulated on-vehicle condition in a
thermostatic chamber, heat it at the specified temperature as shown in Fig. 2 twice repeatedly
for 5 h, and evaluate it on shapes and dimensions, appearance, color and surface condition (5).
The heating method of instrument panel assembly parts alone, however, shall be of radiation
heating (lamp irradiation). The specified temperature shall be adjusted on the top surface of
the meter hood or on the center window of the instrument panel. The ambient temperature
shall be kept at 85 ± 2 °C. For the clearance and flushness, and surface waviness and
wrinkles at high temperature, indicate their measuring points on Specification Drawing.

7.4 Long-term heat resistance (Symbol Hl)

7.4.1 Purpose To see if parts are affected by guard wax, adhesive and plasticizer in vinyl
chloride and to observe changes in shapes and dimensions, appearance and color when they
are exposed to the prescribed temperature for a long period.
Remark After the completion of this test, the test piece in a simulated on-vehicle condition
without being disassembled shall be used again for the test specified in
section 7.6.
7.4.2 Test method The following 2 test methods, Methods A and B, shall be available
for exterior parts and interior parts, respectively.
(1) Method A The Method A shall apply to exterior parts. Coat the test piece in a
simulated on-vehicle condition with guard wax shown in Table 13, conduct a test under
the conditions specified in Fig. 3, then evaluate it on shapes and dimensions, appearance,
color and surface condition (6).
Note (6) The test piece shall be evaluated on staining with the gray scale for assessing
staining specified in JIS L 0805.
