1. Develop 3 example situations of unethical behavior in public speaking. Decide how

you can make changes to create ethical public speaking behavior.
• Dan is a speaker who speaks about faith and holiness in front of people from
different religious backgrounds, but he then mentions other religions, criticizes
them, and uses derogatory language to describe their practices, tradition, and
customs.
- There is no room for prejudice against any group in a public speech, especially
when your audience is from different backgrounds. Dan should always be
mindful of his opinions and learn to respect the diversity of his audience,
because that is how he will also earn their respect. There are other ways a
speech can be more effective with the audience; he does not have to hate on
other people just to show whose beliefs are right and whose are wrong. If he
wants to be an effective and better speaker, he should always show
professionalism by not using derogatory language in his speech and respecting
other people.

• A speaker tells an audience to "shut up and take your opinions elsewhere" due to
the audience’s opposition to his political stand and belief.

- Speakers are there because they are given freedom of speech, so it is only
right that they also give their audiences theirs. A speaker must always have an
open mind to other people’s opinions and accept that other people do not hold
the same beliefs and opinions as he or she does. He should respect them at
all times and make them aware that differences of opinion are always welcome
and accepted. After all, the exchanging of opinions and points of view is what
makes speeches more engaging, as it allows other people to be exposed to
each side to understand them better.

• A speaker quotes Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous line in his speech, but he ends
up saying that it was Nelson Mandela he quoted the line from.

- If a speaker values his speech, then he should also value the quality of it. How
can a speaker inform people if he himself is not informed? He should research
his sources properly and be responsible when quoting other people. He may
think it is only a small thing and that not many people would notice, but doing
so is the ethical thing to do, and as a speaker, he should be the first to know
that. Citing sources properly means that you show respect for the original
creator of the work and that you care for the quality of your speech.
