MY SPEECH ABOUT SIGN LANGUAGE

Kia Ora My Name is Asaria Patrick Today I’m Going to
tell you why you should learn Sign Language. From my
perspective I think either teachers should teach Sign
Language or you should just learn it. Throughout this
speech I’m going to talk about why you should learn
Sign Language and it doesn't have to be right now, it
could be any time.

Here are some reasons why you should learn it. Sign
Language is another new language to learn. At our
school everyone is learning it because there is a
profoundly deaf boy who has hearing aids. We also have
a completely deaf girl in room 15. Everyone wants to be
her friend. She is really becoming quite popular. In our
class we think Sign Language is essential. Sign
Language is not just hand movements it is also facial
expressions. Some signs are Questions, some signs look
the same but they are completely different things for
example “because and why” they are both L shapes going
down your chest like this (shows the sign) as you can see
they look the exactly the same but even I got a bit
confused with this Why is two swipes but Because is one
swipe across the chest.

Next I’m going to tell you some facts about Sign

Language. Different Countries speak Sign Language in
different ways, for example there is ASL, NZSL, BSL and
probably a lot more but I really don’t have time for
that I need to carry on. Most deaf people know both but
normally they speak ASL in Australia and NZSL in New
Zealand and BSL in the British empire (UK). That makes
sense doesn't it.

Another fact about Sign Language is it is the fourth

most used language in the UK. First is English obviously
then it is Polish and Spanish and so on. I could talk
about the most used languages in the UK all day but no
I'm not doing that.

But wait there's more… Sign Language is not just a

couple of hand movements and expressions it is also
Something that means a lot of things to the deaf.

The deaf use people called interpreters to communicate

with the hearing (a.k.a me) In our hub we have a lovely
interpreter called Gemma and she is really good at Sign
Language. I learnt Sign Language from her and have
admired it ever since, that's how I found this topic.

Do you know anyone that's deaf? Well if you don’t that's

completely fine. That's why I’m talking about this and
why you yes you should learn it. From my perspective
everyone should put some effort into learning Sign
Language and start getting more involved with what's
happening all around the world. Lots of people don’t
care about Sign Language and just ignore the deaf. If
your walking around you probably won’t notice Sign
Language first but if you look closer you will see that
there are 100s out there or maybe even thousands of
deaf people just standing around waiting for someone to
talk to, even though there are interpreters you could
still learn it just like me!

I hope you liked my speech about Sign Language and why

you should learn it. Well that's me, I hope you liked it
