iii
Lesson Estimating the Quotients of
1 Decimal Numbers

What’s In

This time, you will learn how to estimate the quotients of the decimal numbers.

Have you experienced buying your school materials with your parents? How
would you know that the money you have is enough to buy the needed materials
without the need to compute using a calculator?

Remember, the numbers used in the pricing of commercial goods are in

decimals. After studying this lesson, you should be able to estimate the quotient of
decimal numbers.

Please take note, dividing decimals require you to round first the number to
its nearest whole number before dividing.

What I Need to Know

This lesson enhances you to sharpen your ability in estimating the quotient of
decimal numbers. Series of activities and exercises are given for you to master the
competency.

What’s New
Let us take this word problem as our first example. Examine it and try to
answer the questions that follow.

Francis Luv has a P 600- peso bill. He wants to buy sign pens
which cost P74 .75 each. About how many pens can he buy.?

1
Looking at the problem, let us get the approximate number of sign pens that
Francis Luv can buy. To do that, we will try to estimate the quotient by dividing his
money with the price of the sign pen.

Step 1. Round the decimal to its nearest whole number

74.75 75.00 Remember:
Round the
Step 2. Arrange using traditional division method decimal to
and divide like whole numbers the nearest
whole
number
8
75 600
-600
0

Step 3. Check. Multiply the quotient by the divisor. It the answer is more or
less equal to the dividend, then you get it right.

75 x 8 = 600

Answer: Therefore: P600 can buy approximately 8 sign pens.

To estimate the quotient, we round the divisor and/or the dividend

to a whole number or to a multiple of 10. We may also round one of
them and use compatible numbers. Compatible numbers can be
computed easily.

Take a look at the examples below. Study the arrows and see how rounding is done.

Example 1: Estimate the quotient by rounding off the dividend.

144.3 ÷ 6 = n -------- 144 ÷ 6 = 24

Example 2: Estimate the quotient by rounding off the dividend and the divisor.
482 ÷ 3.5 = n --------- 480 ÷ 4 =160

Example 3: Estimate the quotient by using compatible numbers.

19.12 ÷ 1.9 = n--------20 ÷ 2 = 10

Are things clear to you now?

Well and good.
You can now proceed to the next part.

2
What Is It

I have just shown you how to find the quotient through estimation. This
time, I want you to read, analyze and find the estimated quotient of some
exercises and word problems.
Take note that estimations are not the exact answers and it may or may
not be reasonable. This will depend on how close or how far is the quotient to
the exact equivalent value and to the advantage of the one using it. So, do it
well for your advantage.
This will help you become good and quick at mental computation.

A. Estimate the quotient of the following.

1) 6.44 ÷ 0.89 = __________

2) 62.4 ÷ 7.4 = __________

3) 211.69 ÷ 38.7 = _______

4) 16.621 ÷ 4.43 = _______

5) 81.347 ÷ 9.23 = _______

B. Read, analyze and solve the following.

1. Nilda worked in an Office on a no work no pay basis. Last month she earned
P6,750.50 for her 21-day attendance. How much is her approximate daily
wage?

2. Carmelo is a motorcab driver. Now that only one passenger is allowed per
motorcab, he earns more than what he usually do in 6.5-day work per week. If
he has P1,975.00 a week, how much is his average daily earnings?

Done? Very good. Now, check your work on the Answer Key
page. How’s your score? If you get high score, that’s great. If
your score is low, don’t worry, you can still continue to work
on this module and develop your skill further.

3
What’s More
Let us see how good you are on Estimating the Quotient.
Activity 1: Solve the word problem.

1. Anjelie bought 7 meters of plastic cover for P69.75. About

how much did each meter cost?

2. Ruth earned P174.75 in 5 days from selling Sampaguita,

about how much was her average earnings?

Done? Very good. Now, check your work on the Key to

Answers page. How’s your score? Do you think it is
reasonable?

What I Have Learned

To estimate the quotient, we round the divisor and/or the
dividend to a whole number or to a multiple of 10. We may also round
one of them and use compatible numbers. Compatible numbers can be
computed easily.

The estimated quotient may be reasonable if it is so close to the

exact value.

You will apply what you have learned from the lesson.

Estimate the quotient of the following sets of decimal numbers.

1) P267.50 divided by 2 = 2) 45.63 ÷ 13 =

3) 471.84 ÷ 3.8 = 4) 60 / 5.2 =
5) 26.44 /4 =
What I Can Do
Let us see if you can do this.

Read and answer the following:

1. Mother bought a 25kg sack of rice which costs P1,250.75. About how much a kilo
would cost?

2. Father went to the market to buy fish. He has P500.00 bill in his wallet. He bought
8 pieces of big fish for P495.00. What is the approximate price for a piece of fish?

Now, check your work on the Answer Key page. How’s your
score? If you get high score, that’s great. If your score is low,
don’t worry, you can still continue to work on this module and
develop your skill further.

In the next lesson, you will be learning more on word problem

solving involving decimals. Practice more and be more.

Solving Routine and Non-Routine
LESSON Problems Involving Division

2 Without or With any of the Other

Operations of Decimals and Whole
Numbers Including Money Using
Appropriate Problem Solving
Strategies and Tools

What’s In

This lesson teaches you how to solve routine and non-routine

problems involving division without or with any of the other operations of
decimals and whole numbers including money using appropriate problem
solving strategies and tools.

After studying, you’ll be able to solve routine and non-routine

problems involving division of decimals and whole numbers including
money.

Keep in mind that routine problems requires simple computation

and easy solutions while non-routine needs adequate time to analyze and
think for ways of solving it. However, you need to follow the same steps to
make you familiarize the procedure. From time to time, word problem
solving for you will be just a piece of cake. Good luck and enjoy learning.

6
What I Need to Know
Let us study the problem below.

While watching television, Franz Niño recorded that the 5

commercials in the program he was watching took 6.15 minutes to
be aired. What was the average length of each commercial?

You can solve the problem using the following steps.

Step 1. Understand:
1. Know what is asked in the problem:
Average length of the commercial

2. Know the given facts:

5 commercials and 6.15minutes

Step 2. Plan:
3. Determine the operation or formula to use:
Division

Step 3: Solve and Check

4. Solve: 1.23
Show the solution: 5 6.15 The illustration shows you how
6.15 ÷ 5 = 1.23 -5 division of decimals involving
11 whole number is done.
-10 Take note that the divisor is a
15 whole number. Therefore there
-15 is no need for you to move the
0 decimal in the dividend, instead,
copy the decimal to the quotient
5. Check and look back: right above it and proceed
1.23 x 5 = 6.15 dividing like whole numbers.

Answer: The average length of each commercial is 1.23 minutes

What’s New

Did you get a clear picture now of how division of decimals is done?

7
To divide a decimal, change the divisor into a whole number. To do this,
multiply both the divisor and the dividend by the same power of 10 or
simply move the decimal places to the right until the divisor becomes a
whole number. Then proceed to division.

Remember, when the divisor is a whole number, there is no need for you to
move the decimal in the dividend, instead, carry it directly above in the
quotient.

Let us study the example below.

Try solving the following problems following the steps we have just discussed
in the previous page. You can open it anytime as your reference.

LESSON Visualizing Ratio of 2 Given

Numbers
3
What’s In

In the previous lessons, you learned about solving routine and non-routine
word problems involving of decimals and whole numbers using
multiplication and other operations. But the big question is, how you are
going to compare quantities and represent each in symbols?

This lesson introduces you to the idea of ratio as it is commonly used in

our day to day life experiences. Sets of activities are prepared for you to
visualize the concept, how it is applied and utilized in different situations.

What I Need to know

Ratio is a comparison of two different things or numbers. It is

expressed in two ways, as fraction and using a colon (:) between two
quantities.

In this lesson, you will be taught what are ratios and how it is used.

You will also be asked to do some exercises in which you will apply
your learned new skills.

12
What’s New

Let us explore this lesson together.

Tree planting activity is really fun and exciting. You will be learning a lot
of things along the way and meet new communities while spending time
with friends and teachers. The table below shows you vital information
about the Fruit Tree Planting Program of Grade 5 classes of Labo Central
School.
Section Learners Fruit-bearing tree seedlings
Faith 25 15
Hope 28 18
Love 30 26
Total 83 45

Looking at the data above, how does the numbers compare to each other?
How does the learners in Section Faith compared to the learners in Section Hope?

There are 25 learners from Section Faith compared to the 28 learners in Section Hope.

Table shows also that there are 26 seedlings in Section Love compared to the 30
learners in their section.

What’s Is It

A ratio is a comparison of two different quantities. It is generally

presented using a colon (:) between two numbers being compared.

Example 1. Let us study this using the data given above.

Section Learners Fruit-bearing tree seedlings

Faith 25 15
Hope 28 18
Love 30 26
Total 83 45

If we are to compare:
1. The number of earners from Section Faith to the learners of Section Hope, we
write 25:28, which reads, 25 is to 28.
2. The seedlings of Section Love to the number of learners in their section, we write
26:30, which reads, 26 is to 30.
Take note that the quantities is of the same order with the sequence as it is presented
in the statement.
Example 2. Marco has 40 marbles of different colors: red 5, blue 10, green 20, and yellow 5.
Find the ratio of red marbles to green marbles, blue marbles to yellow marbles and green
marbles to blue marbles.

Statement Ratio
Red marbles to green marbles 5:20
blue marbles to yellow marbles 10:5
Green marbles to blue marbles 20:10

Keep in mind that the ratio of red marbles to green marbles, 15:20 is different from the ratio
of green marbles to red marbles which is 20:15. So, when writing a ratio, it is very important
that you consider the correct order of the things given in the statement.

Try to divide 5 by 20 and then divide also 20 by 5. Did you get the same
answer? For sure, the answers are different.

This is the very reason that you should follow the correct order of the
quantities as described in the statement.

What’s More

A ratio is also defined as the quotient of the first quantity

divided by the second quantity. Therefore, a ratio is also a fraction.
The first quantity is placed in the numerator and the second
quantity is placed in the denominator.

So, if we are to express the ratio of red marbles to green

5
marbles in fraction form, we have .
20

Example 3. Jose played volleyball and their team got a record of 30 points, 8 blocks,
and 15 spikes in one game. Find the ratio of blocks to spikes, points to spikes
and blocks to points.

Statement form Colon form Fraction form

Blocks to spikes 8:15 8
15
Points to spikes 30:15 30
15
Blocks to points 8:30 8

The illustration given showed you how the relationship of the quantities
is expressed in colon form and fraction form. Take note that the order of the
Therefore if you compare the spikes over the blocks, you will get 15 spikes is to 8
15
blocks; then if we write it in colon form, we have 15:8 and in fraction form .

Activity 1. Try this by your own:

Mother bought vegetables for our weekly supply. She has 2 bundles of
pechay, 3 bundles of string beans, 4 kg squash, 1 bundle malunggay and 8 pieces
potatoes. What is the ratio of pechay to string beans, malunggay to potatoes, and
pechay to squash.

Statement Colon form Fraction form

pechay to string beans

malunggay to potatoes

pechay to squash

Done? Now check your work in the Answer Key page. If you
get it correctly, that would be great.

What I Have Learned

This time, you are going to apply what

you have learned from our discussion.
