My Learning Insight

Based on what I can observe about Neuman’s Theory and its System Model is that it can be used
in defining intra-, inter- and extra-personal stressors in nursing practices. By this means, it provides the
nurse with a comprehensive assessment in terms of caregiving and explains how the primary, secondary
and tertiary prevention interventions can be used in problem-solving. I have learned or discovered that
even the employed individuals can experience some illness. One of these is stress.

Considering the situation of Margarita who is a Nursing Educator that experienced stress, it can
be concluded that the first stressor that ha ve caused her illness is that she is a workaholic person.
People like Margarita can find it difficult to trust others to get a job done, and as such, have difficulty in
delegating tasks. This tendency to be a control freak, in turn, leads to a heavier workload, and more
hours on the job. Stress is a major downfall of workaholism. Second is that she skips meals. Skipping
meals may affect your mental health and physical health. According to my research, skipping meals
might worsen your migraine and may negatively affect your energy and your mood. Third, she doesn’t
have enough sleep or she sleeps late at night. Sleeping late at night might weaken your immune system
and cause thinking issues. Margarita might have missed to take care of herself not knowing that it will
surely affect herself and her job.

Focusing on the Theory of Neuman, the theory is a big help to cope up with Margarita’s illness.
The implementation on coping up with Margarita’s illness started with dealing with a person who’s
experiencing mental illness will include gaining their trust before you can safely interact with them.
Second is that the health care team need to identify the stressors that might have caused the illness so
that they can focus on how or what are their plans to cure the patient. Third is that to start the therapies
that is applicable for the patient. Fourth, is to start helping the patient to have a healthy lifestyle or
rehabilitating the patient. Last but not the least is that identify or check if the patient can independently
perform the variables of health.

To conclude, the Neuman’s Theory can positively impact on reducing the stress of a patient. It is
applicable for occupied person or not. According to my research, this theory is also helpful in reducing
anxiety in the patients with multiple sclerosis and laryngeal cancer, in patients undergoing surgery,
anesthesia and coronary artery bypass surgery and in patients admitted to the intensive care unit; on
reducing the nausea and vomiting.
