AIM: To identify the given salt for acidic and basic radical .

Experiment Observations Inference

Colour: White salt Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Ni2+,
Noted the colour Mn2+ , Co2+ absent.
of salt.
Smell: Odourless NH4+, CH3COO− and
Noted the smell. S2- absent.
Dil. H2SO4 Test: No gas evolved CO32- , SO32- , S2- ,
To a pinch of salt, NO2– absent.
add few drops of
dilute H2SO4

Conc. H2SO4 No gas evolved Cl− , Br − , I−, NO3− ,

Test: CH3COO− , C2O42−
To a pinch of salt, Absent.
add few drops of
Conc. H2SO4 and
heat.

Tests for SO42-

(i)Barium white precipitate formed which SO42- Confirmed
Chloride Test: is insoluble in dil HCl
Add few drops
barium chloride
(BaCl2) to the
aqueous solution
of salt

(ii) Lead acetate White ppt. obtained SO42- Confirmed

test:
To aqueous
solution, add lead
acetate solution

Basic Radical
Test for group I No ppt. formed Pb2+ absent.
To the original
solution, add few
drops dil HCl

Test for group II No ppt. formed Cu2+ and As3+ absent.

To the original solution,
Add a few drops of dilute
HCl and pass H2S gas .

Test for group III No ppt. formed. Al3+ , Fe3+ absent

To the original solution,
Add a pinch of solid
ammonium chloride
(NH4Cl ) and excess of
ammonium hydroxide
(NH4OH)

Test for group IV White ppt obtained. Zn2+ may be present.

To the ammonical
solution ,pass H2S gas.

Confirmatory Tests:
Take the O.S. and divide it
into 2 parts
i)potassium ferrocyanide White / bluish white Zn2+ confirmed
Test: ppt.
To the one part of O.S.,
add few drops
potassium ferrocyanide
solution
K4 [Fe(CN)6]

(ii) Sodium hydroxide white ppt. Zn2+ confirmed

test:
To other part add sodium
hydroxide dropwise.

Result:
The given salt is Zinc sulphate ( ZnSO4)
