Mold Design
CimatronE 10 - Mold Design
Faster Parting
In the new version of CimatronE, Parting is faster and more reliable, and includes new analysis tools.
The enhancements to the Parting process allow users to work with better quality CAD models in the
assembly environment and thus save up to 30% of overall design time as well as avoid mistakes and
apply changes more effectively.
During the parting process, QuickSplit and other parting tools can now utilize solid body information
(from closed and open solids). This does not mean the part has to be a true “watertight” solid body.
Even “open” solids contain valuable information that is now utilized by CimatronE. This part “topology”
provides CimatronE with information about adjacent surfaces, and enables the system to provide
various benefits for work with all solids, even those that are problematic and contain faults. Such
benefits include:
Better, more comprehensive splitting and analysis tools
Increased automation during parting and throughout the tool design process
Additionally, new analysis tools in the parting environment can help users dramatically shorten the
mold tool design process (in the assembly environment), allow customers to handle more complex
jobs effectively, and shorten the overall delivery times of projects. These tools help users to increase
the quality of active parts by identifying and helping to repair faults (gaps and mismatches) in solid
objects. Active parts that have fewer faults result in:
Faster, easier modeling and tool design
Avoiding mistakes
Successful regeneration
Earlier start for manufacturing of the mold (NC programming, Milling, Wire EDM) because pockets
for inserts or lifters can be added to the core and cavity even before exporting parting surfaces.
Electrode design can also start earlier.
69
CimatronE 10 - Mold Design
QuickSplit on Solid
QuickSplit on Solid (for both closed and open solids) includes three additional QuickSplit modes,
offering two . main advantages:
Faster, more effective preliminary split
Analysis tools to speed up mold tool design (by evaluating parting surfaces)
Benefits:
Faster assigning of faces to QuickSplit
directions
Less manual work
Increased flexibility for designers of rubber
molds and other non-standard molds
Sliders and lifters identified during the early
stages of the design QuickSplit on Solid successfully assigns all faces
based on draft angles, except where there are
Easier to identify areas that need mending undercuts and a lifter is necessary.
70
CimatronE 10 - Mold Design
Benefits:
Higher quality CAD models
Option to ensure 100% solid active parts
Easier to locate and repair faults
71
CimatronE 10 - Mold Design
The new Open Edge Analysis allows users to evaluate open edge faults (mismatches and gaps),
making it easier to locate faults and repair solids. Repairing solids partially or completely is not
required, but often leads to massive time savings in later stages of the mold design.
The Analysis feature includes a large range of different analysis options. The following 3 sections
describe the tool’s main functions:
Evaluation and Mending of Imported Parts
Analysis of Parting Surfaces and QuickSplit Faces
Analysis to Define the Parting Line
Benefits:
Immediate evaluation of imported objects
Simpler and faster to identify areas that need
mending, and evaluate post-mending
No surprises later on

CimatronE 10 - NC Strategies
Benefits:
More predictable results In CimatronE 9: This is a second rough operation
with a 0.3 mm surface offset (the first rough had a
Better toolpath 0.5 mm surface offset). Because the change in
surface offset is relatively small, the system was
unable to produce a viable toolpath.

Finish Operations
Benefits:
Higher surface quality
The electrode finish is done using the traditional
Shorter machining time Z-Layers strategy. The connections between the
closed layers are marked in yellow. These connection
motions (both on-surface, tangential-retract and
approach) might leave marks on the electrode.

Re-Machine Operations
Benefits:
Increased user control over machining
Better surface quality
This is a CimatronE 9 Cleanup operation; it
combines the all along strategy (blue) in “horizontal”
areas, and a Z-layers strategy (black) in “vertical”
areas to machine the orange fillet area.

Longer tool and machine life The image shows a cleanup operation. A cutter with
a conic shank is used to speed up machining and
improve surface quality.

CimatronE 10 - NC Strategies
Benefits:
Better surface quality In this example, the system has considered the
Longer tool and machine life orange locating pin as a check surface and has also
considered a 5 mm offset around it. The connection
still maintains a blend spline trajectory, but avoids the
locating pin by the defined offset.
