2. Answer the questions below.

A. What is a gene?

Answer: is a technique that modifies a person’s genes to treat or cure disease

B. Differentiate gene therapy from stem cell therapy

Answer: The introduction of genetic material into cells for therapeutic purposes is known as
gene therapy. Stem cells can be defined operationally as cells that can continuously self-
renew and have the potential to generate intermediate and mature cells.

e importance of gene and stem cell therapy in the future.

Answer: For successful stem cell-based gene therapy, it is important to select the ideal

combination of stem cells, therapeutic genes, and gene transfer method.
C. Demonstrate processes of gene therapy through a diagram

Answer:
D.Discuss at least 5 examples of genetic diseases or disorder

1. Albinism – typically refers to oculocutaneous (ok-u-low-ku-TAY-nee-us) albinism (OCA) — a

group of inherited disorders where there is little or no production of the pigment melanin.
The type and amount of melanin your body produces determines the color of your skin, hair
and eyes.

2. Cystic fibrosis (CF) - is a genetic (inherited) disease that causes sticky, thick mucus to build
up in organs, including the lungs and the pancreas. In people who have CF, thick mucus clogs
the airways and makes it difficult to breathe. Management includes ways of clearing lungs
and eating correctly.

3. Ankylosing spondylitis - is an inflammatory disease that, over time, can cause some of the
bones in the spine (vertebrae) to fuse. This fusing makes the spine less flexible and can result
in a hunched posture. If ribs are affected, it can be difficult to breathe deeply.

4. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia - refers to a group of genetic disorders that affect the
adrenal glands, a pair of walnut-sized organs above the kidneys. The adrenal glands produce
important hormones, including: Cortisol, which regulates the body's response to illness or
stress.

5. Apert syndrome - also called acrocephalosyndactyly, is a genetic syndrome characterized

by anomalies of the skull, face and limbs. Gene mutations are responsible for causing the
early fusion of the skull, hand and feet bones.
