Learning Competency: Describe the Marketing Mix (7Ps) in relation to the business
opportunity
vis-à- vis: Product; Place; Price; Promotion; People; Packaging; and Positioning

FACILITATION SCRIPT
Good day Oroquieta City and Misamis Occidental! Welcome to the Senior High School
Radio-Based Instruction for Entrepreneurship. How are you doing? I hope that you’re all doing
well! We are now on our 9th learning episode in Entrepreneurship.
Before moving forward, can you give me a recap of the things we’ve discussed from our
previous learning episode? Great job!
Last time, we talked about the importance of marketing mix in the development of
marketing strategy.
So, what is a marketing mix? Excellent! Marketing Mix is a set of controllable and
connected variables that a company gathers in order to satisfy a customer better than its
competitors and it is also known as the P’s in marketing.
How many P’s are there in the marketing mix? Very well said! There are 7 P’s in the
marketing mix.
Now, can you enumerate the 7P’s of marketing? Wonderful! The 7P’s of marketing are
product, price, place, promotion, people, packaging and positioning.
Finally, to complete our recap session, will you tell me the importance of marketing mix
in the development of marketing strategy? You got it right! Marketing mix is important as first, it
is a guide to improve a business; second, it helps in differentiation and third, it helps you in being
dynamic.
Thank you for participating in our short recap! I have read your responses from our
previous sessions and indeed, you are all doing great! Congratulations! Now, to continue our
journey, I’d like to present to you our new learning competency. Our learning competency is
----- Describe the Marketing Mix (7Ps) in relation to the business opportunity vis-à- vis: Product;
Place; Price; Promotion; People; Packaging; and Positioning.
Last session, I have introduced the 7P’s to you and today, I will be describing each of
these P’s to you. Are you ready?
Alright! Let’s get started!
Let us describe the first P of marketing, and that is, PRODUCT. A product is an item that
is produced to satisfy the needs of people. It can be intangible or tangible as it can be in the form
of services or goods. Examples of tangible products are the ones that we can touch and see just
like what you’re wearing today! Your t-shirt, shorts, pants, slippers, the food that you will be
eating for dinner later, the snack you just ate a while ago, your medicine, the things that your
mother bought to beautify your house this Christmas, and everything that you bought that is
visible to the naked eye are examples of tangible products. When you buy goods or tangible
products, they can be returned. For instance, if you bought a defective Christmas light for your
Christmas tree, they can be returned to the seller. Also, goods can be stored for use in the future.
How about intangible products? As mentioned earlier, these products are in the form of services.
For instance, the lessons that you hear from your teachers before the pandemic and the time you
spent in cleaning the classroom before and after class are services and classified under intangible
products. When your parents received their 13th month pay and you had your hair dyed or
straightened in a salon, the parlor or salon house has just rendered an intangible service to you.
The COVID 19 patients who got treated in the hospitals have also availed of the intangible
medical services of the hospital. Unlike goods or tangible products, services cannot be returned
once they are provided. Also, services cannot be stored as it will perish after it has been
provided. Services in short are amenities, facilities, benefits or help provided by other people
Now, in the development of the marketing mix part of your business plan, what you are
going to write under product is just a brief and simple description of the product itself. For
example, if you have decided to offer something like a spicy ice cream, the details that you will
write in your Product are its name and specifications and it should be something like this: This
business will be offering Special Spicy Ice Cream with all the finest organic ingredients blended
into one hot and cold dessert. Aside from the major Spicy flavor, the business will offer different
unique flavors such as Spicy Avocado Ice Cream, Spicy Pandan Ice Cream and Spicy Chocolate
Ice Cream.
Let us now move forward to the second P, and that is PRICE. Price is basically the
amount that a customer pays for a product to enjoy it. In other words, it is the monetary value of
your product. Accordingly, all prices must cover all costs and profits. This means that everything
you’ve spent to create your product plus a reasonable profit must be your product’s price. Now,
the price of your product must be established in order to assure sales. If you have a competitor
who offers a price lower than yours, you need not lower down your prices since you have to
think if your lowered price will cover what you have spent. For example, the cost of making a
glass of mango shake is at 4 pesos excluding your profit. Your competitor’s price is at 4 pesos.
Will you offer your mango shake at 4 pesos or 3 pesos? Definitely, no. Take note, you’ve spent 4
pesos to make a glass of mango shake. That does not include your profit. Offering it at 4 pesos
would just bring back your capital. Thus, you have to offer it at a price higher than 4 pesos so
that you will have to make even a small profit. You can offer it at 5 pesos for instance, which
gives you a one-peso profit per glass. Now, if you really wanted to compete well, you have to
lessen the cost of producing a glass of mango shake from 4 pesos to 3 pesos or 2 pesos perhaps.
In this case, you will have to strategize. Think of ways where you can lessen the cost of
production so that in the end, the price of your final product will give you reasonable profits.
Now, in the development of the marketing mix portion of your business plan, what you
are going to write under price is the reasonable price for the product that you will offer. Account
all of the expenses relative to the production of your final item, and them place a reasonable
mark-up which will serve as your profit. Conduct also a research on the price of products similar
to what you will be offering in order to make your price competitive. For example, the spicy ice
cream will be offered depending on its packaging. Thus, you may state it this way: This business
will be offering the following prices for our Special Spicy Ice Cream:
- Small tub (300ml) @ 49 pesos (any flavor)
- Medium tub (600ml) @ 199 pesos (any flavor)
- Large tub (1Liter) @ 299 pesos (any flavor)
Again, this is just an example. You have to perform a research in order for your product
price to be not too low or too high. Make sure as well to set very specific prices in order to guide
your customers well.
Moving on to the third P, we have PLACE. Place is the actual distribution center, or
where a product is sold to the customer. When a company makes decisions regarding place, they
are trying to determine where they should sell a product and how to deliver the product to the
market. The goal of business executives is always to get their products in front of the consumers
that are the most likely to buy them. In some cases, this may refer to placing a product in certain
stores, but it also refers to the product's placement on a specific store's display.
Therefore, in the development of the marketing mix part of your business plan, what you
are going to write under place is the place where you should sell a product or how you will
deliver the product to your customers. Will it be direct, such that you will deliver the product
directly to your buyers? Or will it be indirect where you will be using intermediaries? When we
say intermediaries, they are the middlemen of your business. For Example, if you ordered a
product online, it will be shipped to you via a courier. The courier here will serve as your
intermediary. Other examples of intermediaries are department stores, travel and tours or
ticketing offices and even sari-sari-stores. As an example, you may write this under PLACE in
your marketing strategy: Special Spicy Ice Cream may be ordered online through our facebook
page: Special Spicy Ice Cream. A personal message is highly appreciated. We also have our
contact numbers at 0910-123-4567 or at 0905-678-9101. Special Spicy Ice Cream is located at P-
2, Mobod, Oroquieta City fronting the Barangay Hall.
Again, my dear students, this is just an example. In setting the place, you have to make
everything specific so that you will be able to guide your customers properly. As a tip, you have
to consider offering your product at an accessible or popular place. During this pandemic, you
may also make use of the different social media platforms as a place to sell your products and
other offerings.
The next P is PROMOTION. Promotion involves advertising, sales promotion, and
public relations. The goal of promoting a product is to reveal to consumers why they need your
product and why they should pay a certain price for it. The trick in promoting is letting
consumers feel that their needs can be satisfied by what you are selling. Through it, you let
potential customers know what you are selling.
Thus, in the marketing mix part of your business plan, you just need to briefly state how
you will be promoting your offering. For instance, you may write it this way: Special Spicy Ice
Cream shall be promoted using social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
as it is the fastest way to inform the customers of our existing product and it is free. The
proponent of the business will also consider the creation of leaflets to advertise the product.
Moving on to the 5th P, we have PEOPLE. People refer to the target consumers of the
company and people directly related to the business.
Thus, in the marketing mix part of your business plan, you just need to briefly state the
people behind the business and who will be your target customers. For instance, you may write it
this way: Special Spicy ice Cream was invented by a humble student in the person of Juan Dela
Cruz who is an aspiring entrepreneur in Oroquieta City. With his innovative mindset, he was
able to create a different type of ice cream which has a hot and cold sensation. This product is
specially offered to anybody who loves ice cream regardless of gender, age or race.
Now, for the 6th P, we have PACKAGING. Packaging is the wrapping material around a
consumer item that serves to contain, identify, describe, protect, display, promote and otherwise
make the product marketable and keep it clean. Examples of packaging are cans of sardines,
bottles of water and softdrinks. Paper bags used in bakeries, egg trays, bubble wraps used in your
online orders, eco-bags, and the like are examples of packaging. So, for the marketing mix part
of your business plan, what you need to do is to decide and design a packaging that would best
suit your product. Describe illustrate it. For example, you may write the following under
packaging: Special Spicy Ice Cream will be packaged using small, medium and large disposable
tupperwares to maintain the neatness and compactness of the product. After stating these, you
need to present an illustration of the packaging that you want for the product just like what is
shown in your respective SLM.
Finally, the 7th P is POSITIONING. When a company presents a product or service in a
way that is different from the competitors, they are said to be “positioning” it. Positioning refers
to a process used by marketers to create an image in the minds of a target market. In this part of
the marketing mix in your business plan, you need to state how you would be positioning your
product or service. For example, you may say it like this: No other business establishment in
Oroquieta City offers a different variety of ice cream with a mixture of hot and cold sensation
except for our business. This product clearly differentiates us from our competitors.
Alright! That was one long ride with you my dear students! Thank you for bearing with
me. Finally, we were able to describe the 7P’s of Marketing. Hopefully, you were able to catch
the ideas, and hopefully, you are now ready to construct the marketing mix portion of your
business plan.
Before spending some time to answer your activity sheets, let us do a very quick recap.
Again, what are the 7P’s of marketing? Great job! The 7P’s of Marketing are the following:
Product, Price, Place, Promotion, People, Packaging and Positioning! Now, will you describe
what a product is? You got it right! Product is an item that is produced to satisfy the needs of
people and it can either be intangible or tangible. What about Price? Yes! That is true! It is
basically the amount that a customer pays for a product or service to enjoy it. So how do we
describe a Place? Very Good! This is the actual distribution center, or where a product is sold to
the customer. Can you also describe promotion? Great job! It involves advertising, sales
promotion and public relations that aims to introduce the product to the customers. Now. What
about People? How will you describe these group as part of the marketing mix? Well done! They
are the target consumers of the company and people directly related to the business. We also
have packaging. How will you describe it? Excellent! This is the wrapping material around a
consumer item that serves to contain, identify, describe, protect, display, promote and otherwise
make the product marketable and keep it clean. Last but not the least, we have positioning. How
will you describe this marketing mix? You are a genius! Positioning refers to a process used by
marketers to create an image in the minds of a target market. Alright, now, that we’re all set, I
would like you to get your activity sheet and answer the activities provided for you. Do you have
your activity sheets with you now? Great! Please fill in the necessary information and enjoy
answering the activity.
That’s pretty much everything that you need for this episode! Thank you for listening and
I am very excited to read your responses. (Pause) This has been your teacher in the airwaves,
teacher _______________. Goodbye everyone! Stay safe and sound, and God Bless!!!
