CREATING PROFILES IN RECRUITING Hull 2

Introduction

University students spend hours upon hours studying and researching throughout their

undergraduate career. All these classes and course load help prepare them for a brighter

future in a career with endless opportunities. A student’s chances of attaining a job upon

graduating from a four-year University skyrocket. However, even though their chances

increase still some are left out in the cold. These are the students that lack the necessary

skills or are unaware of the steps involved in the hiring process. Some students are simply

unaware of how to create a resume or create a profile, and also upload a resume.

Nowadays, almost everything is done online from creating a user profile to sending a

resume to a prospective employer. Furthermore, some students even lack interpersonal

and communication skills during the interview process. These steps and skills are crucial

for graduates to attain a job. Several students throughout the University of Texas Rio

Grande Valley have alluded to the fact their unaware of the hiring process and steps

involved upon graduation. In the meantime, months are passing by, and they still haven’t

found a job. Graduates surely want to work, and almost every student desires for a self-

gratifying job. It is not a common goal for a university graduate to invest time, money,

and effort in college and then graduate just to stay at home for the rest of their life. That

defies the norms in our country and especially the American dream.

Needs Assessment

There are various undergraduate degree programs that the University of Texas Rio

Grande Valley offers. This institution has helped many reach their educational dream of

attaining a collegiate education. After conducting several informal interviews, students

have stated their claim of frustration on attaining a job and how to attain a job here in the
CREATING PROFILES IN RECRUITING Hull 3

Rio Grande Valley region. Ms. Moreno who was a legacy student that allowed me to use

her name stated, “I had to change my degree major several times because no work was to

be found” (Moreno, 2018). Now, this statement is startling. I knew something must be

done. One question that came to my mind was why are students changing majors to find

work? We live in a region with over one million inhabitants. The Rio Grande Valley is a

place of growth and opportunity. So, then the investigation process began after asking

several different questions. Most students alluded to the fact they were unaware that

recruiting websites existed in this region and that employers in this area gather data from

those sites. One of the main purposes of recruiting sites is for students to showcase their

education and job skills to respective employers. Best of all these recruiting websites are

free of charge. After concluding the informal interviews and asking various questions, it

is determined that the UTRGV students will benefit from this online training.

This online training will focus on using the internet to create an online account on a

recruiting website such as LinkedIn. It was also noted in the informal interview that a few

students have never even formed a resume. Therefore, this online training will also offer

a brief tutorial that shows the student how to build a resume. Once a stout resume is

created the training will continue to focus on the next step which includes uploading the

resume onto the recruiting website. This will help ease the student's frustration and

answer an outcry that has been alluded to throughout the interviews. Student don’t want

to be left out in the cold trying to figure out how to get a job anymore. This online

training will show students the top recruiting websites that are used in this region and that

have worked for others in the past. Background demographic information was also

collected and used for the need’s assessment. For the most part, UTRGV is a Hispanic
CREATING PROFILES IN RECRUITING Hull 4

serving institution that recruits students who can perform at a high level. These students

have the necessary computer skills to upload attachments and follow simple website links

as the online training will consist of that. Intelligence and computer skills were also

gaged, as all incoming students must upload documents beforehand by accessing

university websites. This is actually one of the requirements students must complete as

they must apply and navigate through various portals and upload required documentation

to be accepted into UTRGV. So, the training should be fairly easy for them to navigate

and understand. Moreover, the best method for this training will consist of a power point

style presentation using “PowToon,” This will help teach the students on how to properly

create profiles in recruiting websites and upload their resume by the end of the lesson.

Instructional Goal and Objectives

This web-based training manual will be developed using Pow Toon an effective and

animated power point presentation. Many students get bored with the typical Microsoft

PowerPoint Presentation. That is one reason why I selected a more interactive and

animated style of training for this particular training. This lesson will meet the needs of

students that are about to graduate by showing them precisely how to create profiles and

upload their resumes online. Students can then log on to these recruiting websites and

make changes as needed on their resume and so on. Nonetheless, the primary goal is to

give students an opportunity to showcase their education, skills, and expertise on the

World Wide Web. After completion of this training module, learners should be in a

position to create a profile in job recruiting website and be able to upload a resume.

Below are the performance objectives that will be addressed for this online training.
CREATING PROFILES IN RECRUITING Hull 5

Objective 1: Using the Internet (CN) the learner will create an account on LinkedIn (B)

with little assistance (CR).

Objective 2: Using a resume previously created (CN) the learners will upload their

resume from their computer to their profile (B) with little assistance (CR).

Objective 3: Using their LinkedIn account (CN), the learners will submit their profiles

websites with no assistance (CR).

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

This online training is centered on students and their quest for attaining jobs upon

graduating from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The final assessment will

allow students to showcase their ability and the new skills learned. These skills consist of

using the Internet as a tool to create a profile on recruiting websites. Once their profile

has been established, they will then have to upload a resume that exhibits their job

experience and education background. Below is a table listing the performance objectives

and how it will be assessed. The assessment rubric will follow a simple 1-5 scale one

indicating poor and five indicating excellent.

Learner Characteristics

The students interviewed range from mid-twenties to early thirties but are not limited to

that statistical number. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is not biased to age

however one must have already graduated high school or have attained a general

equivalency diploma before enrolling in this institution. Students are also both female

and male and are also considered predominately Hispanic. Their education ranges from a

high school diploma to a master’s degree level. But the online training is intended for

students that have just completed their undergraduate degree or about to complete it.

Nevertheless, this training can also help others with higher level degrees seek jobs. For

the most part, all the students are computer literate as they have to conduct research and
CREATING PROFILES IN RECRUITING Hull 8

use the internet as an online tool during their tenure at UTRGV. The majority of classes

require the use of a computer and surfing the world wide web within the syllabus. One of

the students stated she has never created an online profile on recruiting website but does

have basic computer skills (Moreno, 2018). So, for the purpose of this training, we will

consider students to be at a modest level or basic level of computer skills. This level

should be more than sufficient for uploading a resume and creating a profile.

Learning Context

Students schedules vary as some come in the morning’s others in the afternoon and

some even come in the evening as there are night classes. Also, the days that students

come to school varies sporadically. So, with that being said, the training will be

conducted and uploaded to a web server that allows the student to access it via the

internet more efficiently. A web server hosting site that students prefer is drop box. So,
CREATING PROFILES IN RECRUITING Hull 9

for this training, we will provide the students with the drop box URL so they can access it

at their earliest convenience. Since this training will be catered to student’s internet

should not be an issue. Full time or part time student have complete access to library

resources on campus such as computer and internet access. If the student does not have a

working computer, it is suggested he or she come to the library on campus to take the

training.

Instructional Resources

For this training to work properly all students are asked to use a computer with a

reliable internet connection. It is recommended that students use the University Library

for this online training. If the student decides to forego using the University of Texas at

Rio Grande Valley library, they must have the following equipment and software. A

computer with internet access as it is the medium used, Microsoft Word as it is also

needed for resume purposes, and a working email account to email the instructor the

profile link and resume. It is preferred that the students use their University issued email,

so it won’t get sent to spam.

Formative Evaluation Plan

The evaluation will be based on the one-to-one and SME approach. The instructor will

check each email from different students. As an SME I will evaluate the learner’s literacy

development by reviewing if they were able to follow instructions. I will also observe and

critique on how the students were able to create their profiles and upload resumes as they

will also send me a link via email. In the end, the one-to-one approach will be used to ask

the learner questions on what the learner undertakes from the lesson. This will be done to

better gauge their competence and to check if the course was well liked and usable. This

will all be conducted via email as some students cannot meet on specific dates and times

due to their schedules.

Conclusion

University graduates have so much to offer in this life as they are fresh out of

college. Their life is about to unfold and begin as they go on the adventure of looking for

jobs in the land of opportunity. Recruiting websites such as LinkedIn and Indeed.com

were created to allow students and others to showcase their talents and education

background to the World. Students need to take advantage of these websites and also

learn how to upload resumes correctly. The primary intent of this proposed online web

training is to help students meet these demands in the job seeking process. Nowadays

most of the hiring process is done online so a student can’t sit around and expect to be

interviewed and hired without doing anything. It’s a process that is somewhat easy but

often overlooked as it is mostly done online. Going to companies and leaving a hard copy
CREATING PROFILES IN RECRUITING Hull 13

of your resume and asking if their hiring is a thing of the past. The future is now driven

by technology and students must realize that and use it to their advantage.
