Brothers Grimm “The Briar- Rose” Summary

A long time ago there were a King and Queen who said every day, "Ah, if only we had a child! When the
wish came true, the King could not contain himself for joy, and ordered a great feast. He invited the
Wise Women, in order that they might be kind and well-disposed towards the child. The Wise Women
bestowed their magic gifts upon the baby, but when it came to an end, the thirteenth came in - and
without greeting, or even looking at anyone, she cried with a loud voice, "The King's daughter shall prick
herself with a spindle, and fall down dead!".

They were all shocked; but the twelfth, whose good wish still remained unspoken, came forward, and as
she could not undo the evil sentence, but only soften it, she said, "It shall not be death, but a deep sleep
of a hundred years, into which the princess shall fall."

The Wise Women were so good-natured and wise that everyone who saw her was bound to love her.
The King, who would fain keep his dear child from the misfortune, gave orders that every spindle in the
whole kingdom should be burnt. Meanwhile, the gifts of the Wise Women were plenteously fulfilled on
the young girl, for she was so beautiful, modest, good-natured, and wise, that everyone who saw her
was bound to love her.It happened that on the very day when she was fifteen years old, the King and
Queen were not at home, and the maiden was left in the palace quite alone.

And, in the very moment when she felt the prick, she fell down upon the bed that stood there, and lay in
a deep sleep. And this sleep extended over the whole palace; the King and Queen began to go to sleep,
and the whole of the court with them. The horses, too, went to sleep in the stable, the dogs in the yard,
the pigeons upon the roof, the flies on the wall, even the fire that was flaming on the hearth became
quiet and slept. But round about the castle there began to grow a hedge of thorns, which every year
became higher, and at last grew close up round the castle and all over it, so that there was nothing of it
to be seen. After long, long years a King's son came again to that country, and heard an old man talking
about the thorny hedge, and that a castle was said to stand behind it in which a wonderfully beautiful
princess had been asleep for a hundred years.

He heard that many kings' sons had tried to get through the hedge, but they had remained sticking fast
in it, and died a pitiful death. Then the youth said, "I am not afraid, I will go and see the beautiful Briar-
rose." The good old man might dissuade him as he would, he did not listen to his words.

When the King's son came near to the thorn-hedge, it was nothing but large and beautiful flowers,
which parted from each other of their own accord, and let him pass unhurt. In the castle-yard he saw
the horses and the spotted hounds lying asleep; on the roof sat the pigeons with their heads under their
wings. He went on still farther, and all was so quiet that a breath could be heard, and at last he opened
the door into the little room where Briar-rose was sleeping.

Then they went down together, and the King awoke, and the Queen, and the whole court, and looked at
each other in great astonishment. The King and the Queen looked at each other in great astonishment.
The flies on the wall crept again. The fire in the kitchen burned up and cooked the meat. And the
marriage of the King's son was celebrated with all splendour. And the horses in the court-yard stood up
and shook themselves; the hounds jumped up and wagged their tails; the pigeons upon the roof pulled
out their heads from under their wings, looked round, and flew into the open country; the flies on the
wall crept again; the fire in the kitchen burned up and flickered and cooked the meat; the joint began to
turn and frizzle again, and the cook gave the boy such a box on the ear that he screamed, and the maid
plucked the fowl ready for the spit. And then the marriage of the King's son with Briar-rose was
celebrated with all splendour, and they lived contented to the end of their days.

Disney Movie Version “Sleeping Beauty” Summary

Through an agreement between the two rulers, Phillip is betrothed to Aurora, and their marriage will
unite the two kingdoms when they grow up. Angry over not having been invited by the kingdom,
Maleficent casts a spell, promising that once Aurora turns 16, she'll prick her finger on a spinning
wheel's spindle and die. An enraged Stefan orders Maleficent to be captured, but she disappears with a
laugh in plume of smoke, leaving everyone horrified and worried about the princess's doomed future.
Flora and Fauna persuade Merryweather to use her gift to weaken Maleficent's spell.

Through her gift, Aurora will not die, but only sleep until kissed by her true love. The years pass by, and
as Aurora's 16th birthday approaches, the people of the kingdom began to rejoice. At the Forbidden
Mountain, the atmosphere has stayed in a constant clouded thunder, a sign of Maleficent's mood and
that her own quest to find the hidden princess has not been fulfilled. Maleficent's mood is also foul in
that her minions have only been searching for a baby for the last 16 years, not realizing that Aurora
would grow up.

After punishing her minions, Maleficent sends her crow, Diablo, to find the princess. Phillip finds the
princess, and the two share a dance, though neither knows that they are their betrothed. When they
explain that she must not meet this stranger again, Aurora runs to her room, distraught. During all this,
none of them have noticed Diablo peering through a window, before flying off to tell Maleficent about
the update.

Back at King Stefan's castle, King Hubert is also in attendance, as the entire court is preparing for Aurora
to return. With the castle maestro, Sir Minstrel, getting drunk, Stefan and Hubert speaks grandly of the
future for their children until Duke announces the arrival of Prince Phillip, who grandly tells his father
about the peasant girl he met in the woods that he hopes to marry. Hubert is upset at these turn of
events and tries to persuade him to remember his betrothal, but Phillip rides back to the forest and to
the cottage, leaving Hubert glum about how he will tell Stefan about what Phillip says. At the same time,
the Three Fairies have brought Aurora back to the castle through a secret entrance, to prepare her to
meet her family.

They give her some time to herself, but in their absence, Maleficent opens a secret passage in the castle
room. Aurora, under a trance, follows a floating green orb through the passageway. When the Three
Fairies enter the room, they are horrified to find Aurora following the green orb and give a chase. When
they arrive too late, they gasp as Maleficent reveals her true self and mocks them of their efforts of
trying to stop her by revealing the now-sleeping Aurora and vanishes, cackling wickedly over the fairies'
failure to protect Aurora.

While putting Stefan, Leah, and Hubert asleep in the throne room, Flora hears Hubert talk about Phillip
meeting a peasant girl. Deducing that it was Phillip that Aurora had met in the forest, they remember
her saying how the person she met would be coming to the woodcutter's cottage. Hoping to get to him
and awaken Aurora, they set off through the forest, only to find the cottage door wide open and Phillip's
hat on the floor. The three fairies deduce that Maleficent and her henchmen have already captured him.

Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather sneak into the castle, where they find Maleficent's goons celebrating,
while she pays a visit to Phillip, who is imprisoned in a dungeon. Maleficent taunts Phillip with images of
Aurora sleeping, and of one day, sending him off to wake the princess, once he and his horse Samson
have aged considerably, laughing cruelly at the very idea. Once she leaves, the Good Fairies free Phillip
and arm him with the Shield of Virtue and the Sword of Truth. With his new weapons and the fairies'
held and while Flora turns the goons' weapons into harmless entities, Phillip finds Samson and they ride
off toward King Stefan's castle.

Diablo tries to warn Maleficent, but Merryweather turns him into a petrified stone before returning to
Phillip, Flora, and Fauna. Horrified at Diablo's petrification and enraged at the sight of Phillip reaching to
Stefan's castle, Maleficent tries to strike down Phillip with lightning bolts, but the Shield of Virtue
deflects them. Outraged at his determination, Maleficent teleports herself through the French
countryside to Stefan's castle and appears before Phillip, blocking his path. In order to stop him from
breaking her curse on Aurora, Maleficent transformed herself into a enormous, fire-breathing dragon.

At first, he appears to be no match for the enormous dragon, but with the help of the three fairies, he
hurls the Sword of Truth into Maleficent's heart, causing her to fall to her demise. With Maleficent
finally vanquished for good, Phillip is led to the sleeping Aurora's bedside, and his kiss awakens her..
