However, the bright blossoms soon became status symbol for the richest

People invested their life savings in tulip bulbs. Eventually, the price of
tulips dropped. Many people who had paid high prices for their bulbs
were unable to sell them. They lost most of the money they invested.
Three hundred years after tulips ruined the fortunes of many
Dutch, they came to country’s rescue. In 1944, the fighting of the World
War II made it difficult for the Dutch to grow and harvest food. People
were hungry. The Dutch went to their tulip fields. They dug the tulip
