Air Quality Index, Causes And Effects Of Air Pollution
An Air Quality Index (AQI) is a number used by government agencies to measure the air pollution levels
and communicate it to the population. As the AQI increases, it means that a large percentage of the
population will experience severe adverse health effects.
Causes Of Air Pollution

The main causes of air pollution are as follows:

(a) Exhaust from Automobiles: Most of the automobiles use fossil fuels. Burning of fossil fuel releases carbon
dioxide and carbon monoxide. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas even at
low concentrations.
(b) Exhaust from Factories and Power Plants: Coal is the main fuel being used in factories. Burning of coal
produces carbon dioxide and oxides of Sulphur. Oxides of Sulphur and nitrogen form acid rain when they mix with
rainwater. Acid rain is harmful for living beings and for buildings and monuments.
(c) Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs): These are compounds of carbon and halogens and are used as refrigerant. These
are also used in pressurized cans. Excess level of CFCs in the atmosphere damages the ozone layer. Ozone layer
works like a shield and prevents the harmful ultraviolet radiations from reaching up to the living beings. Any
damage in the ozone layer can be very harmful.
(d) Suspended Particulate Matters (SPMs): Some fine particles remain suspended in the air. These are called
suspended particulate matters. Stone quarries and various other factories contribute to SPMs.
Effects Of Air Pollution

Effects on humans:
• Chronic pulmonary disease
• Cardiovascular disease
• Lung cancer
• Premature death
Effects on animals:
• Breathing problems
Effects on plants:
• Reduction in the growth of various parts of plants
• Yellowing of the leaf
Effects on environment:
• Increase in carbon dioxide level
• Melting of glaciers, polar ice
Why Are Room Air Cleaners A Necessary Gadget Of The Present Day ?

• Poor air quality across major cities of the world has made air purifiers a necessity today.
• Air purifiers are a basic need for allergies, asthma, or any other breathing disorder.
• It is also beneficial for everyday people as it provides fresh air to breathe in and prevents allergens and microns.
• Air purifiers may also bring down the spread of sickness all through the house and workplace. In addition, air
purifiers can solve other medical issues.
• Air Purifiers are disinfectants of our surroundings as the air in our surroundings is contaminated with so many
microscopic organisms and pollutants.
• The filters and the fan of an air purifier work together to release clean air.
• The polluted air in the room passes through the device, where the filters trap all the dust, pollutants, and other
harmful elements.
• Thus, the environment becomes clean and fresh once the air is released into the room.
How Do Air Filters Work ?

They work by a series of filters one after another

HEPA filter:
The HEPA filter does not allow anything more than 0.3 um. here are some air pollutants diameters it can remove
Bacteria: 0.3 to 60 μm.
Dust mites: 100 to 300 μm.
Mold: 3 to 12 μm.
Mold spores: 10 to 30 μm
Oil smoke (odour): 0.03 to 1 μm.
Pesticides: 0.001 μm.
Pollen: 10 to 1.000 μm.
Cooking oil (odour): 0.03 to 0.9 μm.
Viruses: 0.005 to 0.3 μm.
Tobacco smoke: 0.01 to 4 μm.
How Do Air Filters Work ?

Charcoal Filter:

This filter is directly behind the HEPA filter and takes care of the smaller particles that the HEPA filter can’t take
care of like Tobacco smoke, cooking oil odour, pesticides etc.

UV light filters:
These filters take care of the living organisms like bacteria, viruses mold and mold spores ,parasites and fungi by
damaging their DNA to such an extent that they die then and there but these filters cannot work without proper air
flow so air purifiers are equipped with fans that move anti-clockwise whose speed can be controlled in some air
purifiers and then after the filtration process it leaves the air purifier.
DPSGV Air Purifier Information

• This DPSGV Air Purifier is here to ensure that you breathe only clean and safe air, thanks to its Advanced 3-
stage Multi Purification System. With an Auto Filter Clean LED Indicator, you will be able to identify when it’s
time to clean or change the filter. The HEPA Filter helps trap fine dust particles and bacteria up to PM2.5 to
ensure that every breath you take is easy and safe.
• This air purifier makes use of a 3-stage filtration process to ensure that the air in your room is clean and safe for
you to breathe in.
• This air purifier has an Air Quality Sensor to ensure that you don’t have to worry about the quality of air that you
and your family are exposed to.
• This air purifier has an Auto Filter Clean LED Indicator that lets you know when it’s time to clean or change the
filter.
• Thanks to the HEPA Filter, the air purifier can trap dust particles and bacteria up to PM2.5 to ensure clean and
safe air.
• Microbe De Active+ Technology: Thanks to this technology, harmful microorganisms like bacteria, pollen, mould,
and dust mites are absorbed and deactivated. This way, your living space will almost be completely free of
microbes.
DPSGV Air Purifier Information

• The air purifier has been designed in a cabinet box and it can be attached at the room window so all the polluted
air will be thrown out of the room, and it will act as an exhaust and thus the air will be purified.

• This project has an average cost of 500 rupees only.

• The air purifier works with the help of adaptor and requires 25 watts.

• It occupies 250 square feet.

• For small rooms it takes 30 minutes to purify air and for big rooms it takes 2 to 3 hours.
DPSGV Air Purifier Future modification

• Plants can absorb some of the smallest particles, particles that even the most advanced air purifiers can’t trap .
In this way, the plant itself acts as a filter. In the future, look for air purifiers that have plants encased in a clear
plastic shell, which will allow for sunlight to reach the plant. Fans could then pull air into the chamber, where it
will be filtered by the plant. An air cleaner with a plant can remove chemicals and other small pollutants.

• As stand-alone air purifiers occupy space so in future we might include air purifiers in general household items
like doorways ,book shelfs , wall decorations.

• Metro cities like Delhi face a very high problem of air pollution so massive air purifiers can be created like air
purifying towers to purify the complete city’s air.
