Nilkanth, Slide 1: Good morning school principals, teachers and honorable judges.

My name is Nilkanth
Desai from Primary 6 Love at Bina Bangsa School Kebon Jeruk Primary Jakarta. These are my partners,
Maxwell Lawrence Sulistio and Vallerie Megan Hioe. Our project is about how to make our own air
purifier. We will start now.

Nilkanth, Slide 2: Reducing pollutants in the air is important for human health and the environment.Poor
air quality has harmful effects on human health, particularly the respiratory and cardiovascular
systems. The health effects of air pollution are serious -one third of deaths from stroke, lung cancer and
heart disease are due to the air pollution. According to WHO, the air quality in Indonesia is moderately
unsafe. It inspires us to make our own air purifier by using inexpensive materials. It is related to SDG
3 :“Good Health And Well-Being”.

Nilkanth, Slide 3 :
Goal 1 : Reducing air pollution can help families become healthier, save on medical expenses and
improve productivity.
Goal 2 : Air pollution poses a major threat to human health. It is linked to respiratory infections and
cardiovascular diseases. By reducing air pollution, it will decrease the morbidity and mortality in
population.
This project will be successful in achieving the goals of SDG 3 because the materials of the project are
easy to find and inexpensive.

Vallerie, Slide 4 :
After saying a round fan, say (diameter 11 inches) with a flat surface to fit the HEPA(High Efficiency
Particulate Air) filter, the cost is around 35 US dollars.

After saying a HEPA filter, say (size 12 inches by 11.5 inches by 1 inch) with a MERV(Minimum Efficiency
Reporting Value) rating between 10-12, the cost is around 32 US dollars.

After saying a strap, say to attach the HEPA filter to the round fan, the cost is around 2 US dollars.

Or we can also modify the shape and the size of the materials used in the project.

Vallerie, Slide 5 :
(For Procedures) We attach the HEPA filter to the flat surface of the round fan by using a strap and make
sure that there are no gaps so the air around them cannot get inside. We put the smooth surface of the
HEPA filter inside to capture the pollutant particles and the rough surface outside to blow out the clean
air.
(For testing the prototype) We burnt some matches that produced some smoke in the room. Then, we
turned on our own air purifier and the smoke disappears in 3 minutes. Without the air purifier, the
smoke stayed in the room for 10 minutes.

Vallerie, Slide 6 :
These are the pictures of our group’s air purifier.

Maxwell, Slide 7 :
It was very difficult to find a fan with a flat surface as many shops did not have any stock of it. It
was also difficult to look for a HEPA filter that could adjust the size and shape of the fan. Luckily, we had
an old style round fan with a flat surface and there was only one shop that sold a HEPA filter which fitted
the size and shape of our fan. Therefore, we could make our own air purifier without some
modifications.

Maxwell, Slide 8 :
(For Conclusion) Our project can help people to achieve the goals of SDG 3 ( Good Health And Well-
Being ) by reducing air pollution at home caused by pollutant particles from outside and inside home
and also remove things as small as viruses and bacteria which is very helpful during this covid pandemic.

(For recommendation) We recommend our project to improve the healthy of you and your family at
home as you cannot always rely on the government. It also improves the air quality at your home and
prevent some diseases.

(Just in case for Q and A)

What is a HEPA filter and how does it work?
HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air. A
HEPA filter is a type of mechanical air filter; it works
by forcing air through a fine mesh that traps
harmful particles such as pollen, pet dander, dust
mites, and tobacco smoke.

The side that feels smoother is the side

where dirty air enters. On this side, there are
a lot of fluffy hairs used to capture the
pollutant particles.
The rougher side is
where clean air blows out.
The main difference between a HEPA
filter is that it is made of thin fibers of glass
and activated carbon-based materials.
Regular filters are made of porous materials
like cotton paper sheets and polyester.
