A. Analyze the poem and its meaning;
B. Appreciate individual freedom; and
C. Draw a symbol about racism and oppression.

2.Motivation
Direction: The students read the lyrics of the song Wavin’flag by Kna’an . Then,they will
listen to the song. After listening,they will analyze the song through a graphic organizer. Each group
discusses their graphic organizer.

3.Motive

(The teacher tell the story of Maya Angelou through pictures.)

The story begins in 1931. Maya is a 3 year old who lives with her grandmother after her parents broke up.
When Maya turned 8 years old she lived with her mom Vivian,her mom Vivian has a boyfriend
named Mr.Freeman.Mr.Freeman begins molesting the 8 year old Maya,threatening to kill her older
brother if she tells anyone. Mr. Freeman rapes her and hides her stained underwear under the mattress
which her mom and Bailey find the garment and realize what happen.Mr.Freeman jailed and then killed
when released from jail.Maya became mute for 6 years because of trauma.
Maya then meet Mrs.Bertha who is the reason by Maya speaks again by giving her books.Maya goes to
school and experience racism for being black. One day,Maya and her grandmother go to a white dentist
but the dentist refuse to treat Maya and they have to take a bus to the closest black dentist.Maya also
experience living in a junkyard because her daddy’s girlfriend didn’t like her and she has no choice but to
runaway.

Maya is a smart girl. Despite of criticims she receive for being black in America, she studied and began
writing poetry at a young age and used poetry and other great literature to cope her rape as a young
girl.Maya met Dr.Martin Luther King and help him raise funds for Civil Right Movements to fight the
rights of black people in 1960s.Maya also beacame part of the African and American Unity Organization
during 1964 led by Malcom X.

This experiences of Maya Angelou lead her to write the poem that we are going to discuss today titled
“Cage bird”.

1.Discussion Questions
BOYS vs.GIRLS. The class is divided into two groups. The appointed leader of the group will score
their team. Each correct answer is one point. The winning team will receive 30 points while the other
receive 15 points.

i. What can you see in the picture?

iii. What are the characteristics of the free bird in the poem?
iv. In the last stanza, it was mentioned that one of the characteristics of the free bird is it “dares to
claim the sky,what do you think is the meaning of this?

b. Stanza 2
i. What can you see in the picture?
ii. How can you describe the bird?
iii.What are the struggles of the cage bird in the poem?
iv. If the reason for the caged bird struggles is because of the caged,what do you think is the
meaning of the cage in the poem that hinders the bird to be free?
v.What does the bird do to cope up with this struggles?
vi. What do you think is the song that the cage bird sing? Is it a happy song or a sad song?
c. Stanza 3
i. How does the caged bird sing in line 1-3 of the poem?
ii. What is the fear of the cage bird?
iii. Despite of this fear, does the bird continue to sing? Why?
iv. What does the caged bird sing all about?

d. Stanza 4
i. If the caged bird feel fear, what do you think does the free bird feel?
ii. How can you say that the free bird feel happy? Choose a line from the poem to support your
answer.
iii. Does the free bird achieve its dream to claim the sky?

e. Stanza 5
i. What is the dream of the cage bird?
ii. Compare the dream of the free bird and the cage bird.
iii. What happened to the dream of the cage bird?

f. Stanza 6
Does the cage bird still has hope that someday he will also live like the free bird?

The students draw a symbol to raise awareness on racism and oppression . After, students will explain
their work.
