THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Global

Hong Kong universities offer a wide range of research postgraduate programmes

in both science and humanities. Students are encouraged to conduct research under the

guidance and supervision of world-class scholars in a liberal environment. Ongoing

support from the government and other organizations enables students to benefit from

learning and development in advanced teaching and research facilities. Hong Kong’s

dynamic research culture continues to attract young researchers to study here.

Philippines

The U.P. Manila Research Database (UPMRD) is an online catalog developed by

the Universities library in collaboration with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research

and the National Institutes of Health (OVCR/NIH). It provides a rich source of published

and unpublished researches done by the faculty staff and graduate students of U.P.

Manila. It is intended for policy makers, faculty, researchers, health workers and students.

The database is available online and will have a printed format, entitled “Compendium of

Research Abstracts 2006-2008”, which will be launched later this year.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the literature and studies that will support our title and for

further information. Literature includes books while studies includes researches.

Local Literature

In the Philippines, doing research has become one of the important professional

development programs for teachers that is emphasised by the Department of Education

5
Valley High Academy Inc.
J.P. Rizal St., Manggahan, Rodriguez, Rizal

(DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) (Ulla, 2017). Ulla added that

teachers both from private and public educational institutions are encouraged to conduct

action research in order to identify and address the teaching and learning issues and

concerns in their classrooms and in the school.

It is important for a researcher to have a comprehensive and relevant body of

supporting materials to his research work (Pilar, 2015). He furthermore stated that

research provides the rationale of the framework of the study. The importance of doing

research has upon the professional development of teachers and their practices has been

widely acknowledged in the literature. For one, it equips teachers and other education

practitioners with the skills necessary for identifying what the problem is in a school, and

knowing how to address that problem systematically (Hine, 2013, Ulla, 2018).

By doing research, teachers are believed to improve their teaching practices for

the betterment of students’ learning and for the school. Educational institutions in the

Philippines have encouraged their teachers to be involved in research, as it is seen to be

useful for their professional development and in their teaching career, teachers are

confronted with many issues that affect their motivation to undertake research (Morales,

2016, Ulla, 2017).

Research itself guide the researcher in searching for or selecting a better research

problem or topic and to locate more sources of related information (Reyes, 2014).

Foreign Literature

From an individual point of view, the advantages of research extend beyond having

an impressive degree certificate. Through detailed research, students develop critical

thinking expertise, as well as effective analytical, research, and communication skills that

are globally sought-after and incredibly beneficial. Ultimately, research is essential to

economic and social development of our globalised society, forming the foundations

governmental policies around the world (University of Skovde, 2016).

“Knowledge generated by research is the basis of sustainable development, which

requires that knowledge be placed at the service of development, be converted into

applications, and be shared to ensure widespread benefits” (Louis-Kearny,2016).

According to Reddy (2016), research is important for the students because it helps

them to have a detailed analysis of everything and have proper in-depth analysis on any

topic, the result comes out to be fruitful and also the knowledge is enhanced.

Educational research can have significant implications for the teaching-learning

situation, it is essential that educational researchers complete their research projects in

good faith. Poorly conducted research can cause further harm to the educational process

than no research at all (Siegler, Ramani, 2009).

Educational research can be defined as a ‘purposeful and systematic’ enquiry ‘to

solve a problem, illuminate a situation or add to our knowledge’ (Mutch, 2005).

Local Studies

Research helps develop tools for assessing effectiveness of any practice and

operations, and research provides solutions to problems concerning almost all issues

encountered in the different areas of work (Alegarbes, 2015).

It is important for a researcher to have a comprehensive and relevant body of

supporting materials to his research work (Pilar, 2015). He furthermore stated that

research provides the rationale of the framework of the study.

According to CHED (2009), research plays a significant role in the development of

any nation, in many different fronts including, and not limited to, the development of the

nation and no country can develop without research. The more the society grows, the

more the research outputs can be produced.

It is quite clear that the reason of improvement and modernization of this country

is research where it is a primary way to shape the future of each students (Penarubia,

2015).

Research is not only beneficial to students but also essential to life. It is undisputed

that researches which are aimed to explore the recesses of knowledge would bring about

changes that precede growth and development. (Payne, 2016).

Foreign Studies

Research has been defned as a “systematic investigation, including research

developments, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable

knowledge” (Ahmad, 2015). He further stated that it also aims to establish facts and reach

new conclusions.

Moaliawati (2017) stated that when we want to conduct a research, we need to

know what is the importance of conducting a research. Before we come up to a conclusion

on the importance of research, we should know the goal of research. She furthermore

stated that the goal of a research is to discover something.

How students perceive group work is closely correlated with the benefits of group

work experience. However, a great variety of influences affect student perceptions of

group work. This study quantifies the impact of various influences on the effective

working, learning assistance and enjoyment of group work (Butt, 2018).

According to Kapur (2018), research in education represents an activity, directed

towards the development of an organized body of scientific knowledge about the events

with which educators are concerned and has enabled substantial progress to be made in

curriculum development and reform, educating slow learners, understanding the

psychological traits of the physically challenged individuals and in adapting methods of

instructions to the needs of individual learners. Research is a tool for building knowledge

9

J.P. Rizal St., Manggahan, Rodriguez, Rizal

and efficient learning and is also important for budding and veteran writers, both

offline and online (Mehta, Chug, Perwez, 2017). They added that research entails both

reading and writing.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Tinto’s Integration Theory

Tinto’s student integration theory is useful in analyzing student retention, but this

accounts for only a modest amount of variance in retention. Nevertheless, important

relationships amongst student’s initial and later academic goals and commitments have

been identified through this new approach to analyzing retention.

Grounded Theory

Grounded theory is introduced as an inductive, comparative methodology that

provides systematic guidelines for gathering, synthesizing, analyzing, and

conceptualizing qualitative data for the purpose of theory construction. The founders of

grounded theory, Barney G. Glaser and Anselm L. Strauss. Grounded theory is a

research tool which enables you to seek out and conceptualize the latent social patterns

and structures of your area of interest through the process of constant comparison.

Belbin’s Theory

Dr Meredith Belbin and his team discovered that there are nine clusters of behavior
- these were called ' Belbin Team Roles' Each team needs access to each of the nine
Belbin Team Role behaviors to become a high performing team. However, this doesn't
mean that every team requires nine people! Most people will have two or three Belbin
Team Roles that they are most comfortable with, and this can change over time. Each
Belbin Team Role has its strengths and weaknesses, and each has equal importance.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods used to collect data and an explanation to the

information, data, and questions that was gathered and analyzed. It also shows the

participants, the location of proposal, and methods used to compute the gathered data

using descriptive quantitative research design.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers use descriptive quantitative survey design, wherein descriptive

research is a quantitative research method that aims to collect quantifiable information to

be used for statistical analysis of the population sample without focusing on “why” a

certain phenomenon occurs. In other words, it “describes” the subject of the research,

without covering “why” it happens.

RESEARCH LOCALE

This proposed research is conducted at Valley High academy – JP Rizal St.

Manggahan, Rodriguez Rizal for selected students of HUMSS strand, sections A-F

School Year 2019-2020. In 1993, Valley High Preparatory School was founded by Ma.

Divinagracia S. Gran, located at Zuniga St. Manggahan, Rodriguez Rizal. In 1994, the

grade school department was established. In 1996, the relocation of Valley High

Academy was moved to its present address at JP Rizal St. Manggahan, Rodriguez,

Rizal. In 1998, high school department has opened. In 2001, the construction of a new

four-storey classroom building was aligned to the Administration Office. In 2002, the

VHA Hymn was composed. In 2004, VHA won various awards from different academic

contests facilitated by the ROPRISA. Valley High Academy are also champion in

General Mathematics High School Division and 2nd place in on-the-spot slogan writing

contest

DESCRIPTION OF THE RESPONDENTS

The participants we have for our research came from the strand HUMSS A, B, C,

D, E and F. 10 respondents every section filled up the questionnaires that are given to

them. They are the respondents who have their free time to answer our given survey

questionnaire. The researchers conducted a survey using the convenient sampling it

is also known as availability of the respondents for further understanding of the

research study.

After knowing the effects of practical research group tasks to multidisciplinary

academic performance of students, the researchers conclude that it may result to their

good performance and attentiveness to their research subject and lessons due to their

focus that may lead to the success on their current semester.

INSTRUMENTATION AND DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researchers use survey questionnaires as the data gathering procedure. The

participants of the questionnaires are Grade-11 Humanities and Social Sciences students

of Valley High Academy from sections A, B, C, D, E, and F that are responsible for the

relevance of the title. All questions are related to practical research and it has 10

questions. ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ questions are used as the data gathering instrument.

Participants answered the given questionnaires by checking the rating scale on their

preferred response.

ADMINISTRATION AND RETRIEVAL OF THE INSTRUMENT

The questionnaires were handed out personally by the researcher herself/himself to

the respondents. The sixty (60) checklist survey questionnaire was divided in to 2

researchers to distribute in section HUMSS A, B, C, D, E and F to the target respondents.

In their free time all of them agreed to leave the instruments to their contact person in that

particular class.

TREATMENT OF DATA

After the computation of data, the 2 researchers carefully recorded the correct

graphed data for checking the total number of respondents based on the distributed

instruments of sixty (60) sets.

The researchers used the following formula to present the data in tabular form.

J.P. Rizal St., Manggahan, Rodriguez, Rizal

3. Does practical research improve your ability in making new

ideas?

4. Does practical research helped you to responsibly take on responsibility?

5. Does practical research help your co-researcher adopt versatility?

6. Does practical research acquire knowledge about leadership?

7. Does practical research affect your multidisciplinary behavior?

8. Does conducting research boost your inspiration to immediately comply on your

requirements?

9. Does conducting research refine you to build confidence with presenting

yourself?

10. Does practical research helps you to improve your consistency in your decision

making?

This research used the descriptive method particularly survey. It consists of 60

respondents of Humanities and Social Science students from sections A, B, C, D,

E, and F.

The instruments used to gather the data and Information in this study was

the survey questionnaire. This was based on the criteria stated earlier in the form

of checklist with provision for additional Information

To get the result, the researchers used the tabulation method to get the result of

percentage.

The following are the salient findings of the study.

1. Practical research group tasks may be described in terms of rigidity in the way of

reasoning, decision making, and consistency. With the use of reasoning, decision

making, and consistency, the process of doing an academic activity will remain its

viscosity to create and finish the practical research.

2. Practical research activities be described in terms of multidisciplinary challenge in

the way of student’s participation in different activities and in how they act

themselves. An example of a multidisciplinary challenge is practical research itself.

Practical research involves academic content that must be fulfilled by

multidisciplinary thinking.

3. The concluded result of the data gathered is that practical research indeed has an

effect on multidisciplinary academic performance. The majority of positive

response rather than a negative response on each question about practical

research proves that practical research is a consistent activity for multidisciplinary

academic performance.

Conclusion
Based on the result of the study, the researchers arrived at the following conclusions:

The majority of positive response shows that the Practical Research enhance the

logical thinking of the students. By conducting research, students probably need to think

deeply to gain information that may help to their research. From the gathered data stated

above, Practical Research helped students to improve their reasoning skills. With the help

of research, students tend to learn how to depend their ideas and can give some

justification for that. Practical Research is a careful and detailed study into a specific

problem, concern, or issue in that way most of the respondents are improved their ability

to make new ideas because conducting a study needs more ideas in order to finish it.

Practical Research also helps them to handle and manage well a responsibility. Practical

Research influenced students to do a task in order way and also to finish the responsibility

in a presentable way. This research also shows that the versatility of our co-workers or

groupmates are manifested. This also improves the leadership of a person on how they

are going to organize his/her co-researchers. Base on the data gathered, conducting

research refine the researcher refine theirselves to build confidence with presenting

theirselves and improve their consistency in decision making.

Recommendation

The research recommends the student to apply multidisciplinary in group work

which includes the diversity and inclusivity of each group members. You may apply the

behavior to enhance your personal skills, enhancing your logical thinking, creativity,

confidence and strong decision making. Members should trust the grouo leader and

communicate to each of them in order to succeed.

Students should improve their communication skills in order to make their way

into grouptask. Respondents should avoid personal issues and unprofessional

behavior to not create drama. According to research (Sarah alloms, 2017) fatigue is

also the cause of hindrance to not function well. Students must take enough rest to

interact properly.
