4-8 . ( Refe r to F igure 4-1 and schematic .) Th is ci rcuit provides approximately 24 dBm of sig nal
gai n for the Sch mitt t r igge r i nput. In addition , the balanced input amplifier uses α feedback
i
circu it to ensure t h at the d o level of the Schmitt Trigger nput remains co n stant in s pite of input
ci r c u it o r tem perature variations. Dc offsets, that r esu lt f rom these variations are sensed by
feedb ack comparato ι, A1 U5 and com pa red wit h the level set by balance potentiometer Α11132 . Α
d ifferen ce results i n compe nsating voltage drive to α d ifferential terminal of A1 U8. This
com pen sati n g voltage ultimately drives the output of Α1IJ6 i n α direction wh ich nu lls the o riginal
offset voltage . F o r example; if, due to temperature or ci rcu it va riations, th e inpu t d o level to the
Sch mitt Trigger becomes more positive ; A1 U5 se nses the change at its inpu t. The com parato r
responds b y provi ding α negative voltage wh ich is proportional to this positive offset . This
negative voltage dr ives α d ifferential terminal of A1U 8; forci ng its output in α mo re p ositive
d i rection . This positive inc rease causes the inverting outpu t ofA1 U6togomore negative; nulli ng
the o rigi nal p ositive offset . This consistent d o level ensures that α si ne wave i n put to the Sc h mitt
trigger (A1 U 2) produ ces α symmetrical square wave output.
4-10. ( Refe r to F ig ure 4-1 and schematic.) As α resu lt of the Schmitt trigger, signal 'If" is now an
EEC L s qua r e wave that is com patible to the d igital counter ci rcuits . This square wave is applied to
the M ai n Gate (p art of Α1 U1) . The M ain Gate is enabled by the low M GE sign al wh ic h is d e rived
f rom the Τ.Β. (Time Base) circuits. The width of M GE , or "t", is d ete r mi n ed by t h e setti ng of the
front p anel GAT E TIME switch . The ΤΒΟ count down ci rcuits respo nd to th e switc h i npu t by
counti ng d own t he 10 MHz ΤΒΟ to provi de α 0 .1, 1 .0, or 10 second M G ("t") width (refe r to F ig-

Deca d e Counte rs . These counters count the numbe r of cycles (during i nterval "t") and provi de
the r esu lti ng "η" data in t he form of n ine (4 bit) BCD characters . This accu mulate d data is
transfe rred to 9 sto rage latches when α T R (tra nsfer) pulse is received f rom the Sca n Timing
circuits .

4-16. The sample and display timing circuits provide sig nals WXYZ, a nd 50 through S9. These
sig nals sequ entially transfer cou nte r data, one ( BCD) cha racter at α tim e to the appropriate d isplay
d igit. F igure 4-1 shows α mec hanical repr ese ntation of the act ual electronic multiplexi ng

ch aracter (MSC) is sam p le d at the counter latches as α resu lt of an ΧΥΖ "101" ( BCD "5") signal. At
the same time α low S5 sig nal activates the most significant counter d isplay d igit (i.e., the left-most
d isplay d igit). Th erefo re, during time S5, the M SC is transfe rred to the BCD-to-seve n li ne

1. M GE is an EECL version of the TTL MG sig n al .
2. Dis play sca n timing and t he timing of the M G (or MGE)
sig nal are asy nc hr o n o us . T h e refo re, the positive transi-
tion of the MG (o r M G E) signal (i.e., trailing edge)
occurs dur ing any random time.
3. MG (o r MG E) widt h ("t") depends on the setti ng of the
GAT E TIME switch .
M GE is low during time "t", allowing the frequency counters to count t h e i npu t signal
frequency. The storage latches are isolated f rom the counters at t h is time.
2 After t he MG signal terminates, the RSTB latc h is set at the begi nning of sca n time S9.
Ο
This initiates the upd ate sequence. Α R ST B sig n al h olds M GE off (i .e., h igh) until the
completion of the u pd ate sequ ence (ap proximately 0 .5 miΓlisecon ds later).
T
During sca n time 99, TR and R p u lses are generate d . These signals connect the counte r
outputs to th e sto rarge latches; resulti ng i n t he transfer of n i n e B CD c h ar acte r s to the
latches. When the TR and TR p u lses e nd, th e latc hes are again isolate d f rom the fre-
quency counters.
SC pulses reset the frequency counters to ze r o.
Du ring scan time S8 RSC and R
During scan time S7, the RSTB latch is cleared, ending the update seque n ce, a nd releas-
i ng M GE (i .e ., allow ing it to go low) to allow a n oth e r frequency co un t.

D uring scan time 57, Ripple B lanking (RB) L atch A1 U 23 is p reset. P in 5 goes h igh;

the Ripple B lan king I npu t (RB I) Gate outp ut h ig h . The d isplay digits are not evaluate d

Th e low S5 signal fo rces N AN D GAT E A1 U20 h ig h . Th is h igh drives enabled RBI gate

Low RBO clears the RB latch . The r esu lti ng low output keeps N AN D GAT E U20-8 h igh ;
wh ich in turn keeps the RBI signal active (low) . Since there is no i npu t signal to the
