Executive Summary

This report presents a Personal Development Roadmap that has been put together to
provide some level of cohesion in all the necessary actions that will be taken in achieving my
long-term goals of being a successful entrepreneur. For producing a realisable roadmap, this
report will utilise a step-by-step approach, starting with establishing the author’s background,
competencies, vision, and short-term and long-term goals to understand the current situation
followed by critical analyses of strengths and weaknesses using self-analysis tools. Self-
Assessment Roadmap (Smith College, 2018), FACETS model (Bolton and Thompson 2004)
and Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator (Myers and Myers 1995) are the three tools that
use used for analysis. Based on this analysis, a detailed Gantt chart is produced for a span of
12 months that includes accomplishing goals and developing strengths and capabilities in
three key aspects, Education, Career and Self Enhancement. Further, each of the key goals
and self-development activity is analysed considering how I can use my identified set of
strengths to achieve them and how I can build up on my existing competencies and counter
any skill and knowledge gaps. The success of this roadmap is also subject to external
opportunities and threats which shall also be taken into consideration.

1 Introduction
Underlying this report is a personal development plan extending over a period of 12
months, starting May 2022. The development plan is based on the vision of education, career,
and personal growth; and put together through critical self-analysis to identify any skills and
knowledge gaps that may be required to achieve the goals.

2 Career Aspiration
2.1 Background
I was born and raised in Noida, India where I got a bachelor’s degree in mechanical
engineering. My family has a manufacturing business in India which was incepted 3 years
ago. I have come to Manchester to gain knowledge and exposure that would help me fulfil my
goal to take my family venture to a new level. My family specifically my dad has been my
inspiration and a constant source of learning about life and business. My ultimate goal is to
improve the quality of life of myself and my family.

2.2 Vision
Successful Entrepreneur

Networking and Gaining Skills

Get Distinction

My short-term mission is to complete my dissertation and get distinction in my master's

degree. Following this, my long-term goal is to maintain the meaningful personal and
professional connections I have made through my master’s degree. As the popular African
proverb goes, “if you want to go fast go alone if you want to go far go together”; these
connections may benefit me in my personal and professional life later. Additionally, in the next
12 months, my aim is to acquaint myself with the necessary technical, professional, and social
skills that would make me qualified enough to step into my family business and add value. In
the next 10 years, I have two major goals, the first is to build a passive income of £30,000 pm
and the second is to be a successful entrepreneur with diversified businesses supported by a
healthy and loving family.

2.5 Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator

The Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator is a questionnaire that indicates

psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions (Myers and
Myers 1995). The results are presented below:

I wanted to live the life, a different life. I didn’t want to go

to the same place every day and see the same people
and do the same job. I wanted interesting challenges.
(Harrison Ford)

This test concludes my personality type as Turbulent Virtuoso. This type is known for
its technical mastery, willingness to improvise and finding unique solutions to seemingly
impossible challenges. Detailed results are as follows

2.6 Strengths and Weaknesses

Through this critical self-analysis, valuable insights can be gathered about my strengths
and weaknesses which could help me achieve my short term and long-term goals. I possess
strong leadership/management, creativity, physical, and analytical skills; that can support me
in my professional career ahead. In terms of entrepreneurial characteristics, I show a strong
capability to set targets without getting distracted from achieving them, the ability to select the
right opportunities and develop new and creative ideas. Further, Myers-Briggs Personality
Type Indicator also reveals that I have a relaxed personality with a practical mindset that
shows spontaneity with logic and is a natural in crisis.

These tools also show that my weakness lies in having low relationship and
communication skills owing to my ineffectiveness to resolve conflicts, serve clients and
customers, negotiate, persuading, and promoting. This could be a barrier to my success in
future if not worked upon. Moreover, I also show a lower score in choosing people to work
with and forming useful networks which may affect my entrepreneurial journey. I have a
personality that is stubborn, insensitive, easily bored, and often pushes boundaries which
could result in showing risky behaviour.

3 Development Roadmap

This section presents a detailed Gantt chart of my development plan (Appendix 7.3) that
covers three key areas of development i.e., Education, Career, and Individual Enhancement
for the next 12 months.

For my education, I will be finishing my coursework by the end of May and shortly after,
jump on my dissertation. Even though my formal education is scheduled to end in September,
I will continue to learn through various online courses to add to my set of skills. As for my
career, I already have a part-time job until may end, but will need to find another starting June.
After finishing my dissertation, I will start looking into full-time jobs. I plan to start working full-
time and earn money in October to gain professional experience. This experience will
potentially help me develop the management, relationship, and communication skills that I
lack. During all these times, I will simultaneously be working on self-enhancement through
various activities.

4 Analysis of Development Roadmap

4.1 Education
Table 8 Gantt Chart for Education

=Milestone

My short-term goals for my education are to finish the coursework and dissertation
before their respective deadlines. Here, my skills to organise, and manage projects paired
with good analytical and problem-solving skills will come in handy. I aim to get distinction in
my master's degree for which I am quite confident thanks to my ability to stay focused and
fulfil targets. Additionally, to improve my skills and prepare myself to be an entrepreneur and
support my long-term goals, I will continue to learn more about business and management
through books and online courses.

These goals and objectives are ambitions, and I am bound to face several difficulties.
I consider myself weak in some critical respects such as building a team, resolving conflicts,
and facilitating groups (for group work); ability to research (for dissertation), and getting easily
bored (continuing learning through online courses). Nevertheless, I shall constantly remind
myself of my ultimate long-term goals and that all these experiences will help me overcome
my weaknesses and add to the set of skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur in future.
Moreover, my plan to enrol myself in online courses and public speaking seminars will help
me learn about personal finances and resource management and elevate my ability to
promote and sell myself.

4.2 Career
Table 9 Gantt Chart for Career

=Milestone

My current part-time job is scheduled to end in June after which I will be looking into a
new part-time job for earning money. This shall not be a difficult task as I have the benefit of
identifying opportunities. Even though my long-term plan is to join my family business, I will
need to prepare myself with various professional and interpersonal skills first. For that reason,
I have decided to work at a full-time job based on my long-term career prospects, after finishing
my dissertation. This way I could learn through the professional experience of a job. My lack
of interview and persuasion skills could be a hurdle in this regard however, this can be
overweighed by my strong qualification along with good creative, analytical and problem-
solving skills that will support me secure a good job. This job would potentially help me learn
about leading, coaching, negotiating and management and communication skills by working
under professionals. The whole experience will also be an opportunity to improve my interview
skills.

15
10964210

4.3 Self Enhancement

Table 10 Gantt Chart for Self Enhancement

=Milestone

For holistic self-development, an individual’s mental well-being is most important. To

protect me from getting excessive stress and anxiety, I have decided to take at least 4 days
off every month for travelling around UK and Europe. In addition, I will be taking up
volunteering work to contribute to society. Travelling and volunteering would also help me
enhance my social and cultural awareness. Furthermore, my personality assessment shows
that I get easily bored. To tackle this problem, it would be beneficial to take periodic breaks
and indulge in physical exercises to gain new perspectives on looking at the problems at hand.
To improve my well-being, I plan to learn healthy cooking and increase the amount of physical
exercise by taking up outdoor sports after submitting my dissertation. Although I do not have
a mentor now, I shall be approaching people from my cohort of master's degrees, who
themself have years of experience working professionally, to gain insights and develop
interpersonal skills in a professional context. Along with reading personal development books,
I shall also be spending time attending social gatherings to develop my network that would
help in my entrepreneurial journey later.

A summary of opportunities and threats I expect to face are:

5 Conclusion

In this report I have reflected on my short-term and long-term goals to create a detailed
12-month roadmap that would help me achieve them progressively. This roadmap covers
three critical aspects of life i.e., education, career and self-enhancement and is created by
critically identifying strengths and weaknesses in my personality and skillset. I shall be utilising
my strengths to achieve the set goals and overcome weaknesses by developing the necessary
skillset. However, the success of this roadmap is subject to certain specific opportunities and
threats listed in figure 5. I will be utilising my skills and abilities to achieve my goals of
graduating with a distinction, securing a part-time job followed by a full-time job, improving
fitness and wellbeing, interpersonal skills, network, etc. all of which will be favoured by
opportunities such as good past scores, excellent guidance from supervisors and experienced
cohort, an abundance of resources (books, online courses etc.), increasing network and
access to fitness centres. Simultaneously, I shall keep a close eye on threats and barriers to
progress such as high workload, uncertain schedule, external competition, etc. Considering
these factors altogether will help me successfully implement the roadmap.
