▪ Let us begin this lesson with what you have learned so far about Afro-Asian people by
reading the poem “I am an African Child” by Eku McGred.

I AM AN AFRICAN CHILD

By Eku McGred

I am an African child
Give me a broken bicycle;
Born with a skin the colour of chocolate
Plus the freedom to be me
Bright, brilliant, and articulate
And I will build you a wind mill
Strong and bold; I’m gifted
I am an African child
Talented enough to be the best

I am an African child
We are the new generation
Often the target of pity

My future is not confined to charity

Give me the gift of a lifetime;

Give me a dream, a door of opportunity;

2
I will thrive

I am an African child

Do not hide my fault

show me my wrong

I am like any other;

Teach me to dream

And I will become

I am an African child

I am the son, daughter of the soil

Rich in texture and content

Full of potential for a better tomorrow

Teach me discipline, teach me character, teach me hard work

Teach me to think like the star within me

I am an African child

I can be extra-ordinary

call me William Kamkwamba the Inventor;

Give me a library with books

Give me scrap yard and discarded electronics

▪ To better understand the meaning of the poem, students will listen to a video
clip

Abstract

Let’s put it in Mind (Short Discussion)

To understand fully the role of nonverbal communication it is important to be

dependent on seeing and analyzing physical movements as opposed to verbal
communication, or the use of language to transfer information through written text,
speaking or sign language

Nonverbal communication is the transfer of information through the use of body

language including eye contact, facial expressions, gestures and more. For example,
smiling when you meet someone conveys friendliness, acceptance and openness.

The role of body language, or non-verbal communication, is just as important in

delivering a message as the actual speech.Your nonverbal communication cues—the
way you listen, look, move, and react—tell the person you’re communicating with
whether or not you care, if you’re being truthful, and how well you’re listening. When
your nonverbal signals match up with the words you’re saying, they increase trust,
clarity, and rapport.If you want to become a better communicator, it’s important to
become more sensitive not only to the body language and nonverbal cues of others,
but also to your own.
