▪ Let us begin this lesson with what you have learned so far about Afro-Asian people by
reading the poem “I am an African Child” by Eku McGred.
I AM AN AFRICAN CHILD
By Eku McGred
I am an African child
Give me a broken bicycle;
Born with a skin the colour of chocolate
Plus the freedom to be me
Bright, brilliant, and articulate
And I will build you a wind mill
Strong and bold; I’m gifted
I am an African child
Talented enough to be the best
I am an African child
We are the new generation
Often the target of pity
2
I will thrive
I am an African child
show me my wrong
Teach me to dream
I am an African child
I am an African child
I can be extra-ordinary
▪ To better understand the meaning of the poem, students will listen to a video
clip
