Rainbow
Weaving Activity
You will need:

• a white paper plate • scissors

• blue poster paint • white wool or string
• paintbrush • coloured wool
suitable for
• pencil
creating a rainbow

What to do:
1

Cut the paper plate in half.

Use a pencil to draw cloud shapes on the paper plate.

3
Paint around the cloud shapes with blue paint to create
the sky. Leave to dry.

4 With a pencil, mark the middle of the straight edge.

Do the same on the curved edge. On each side of the
middle mark on the curved edge, make three more
marks, spacing them out evenly.

5
Make a 1cm cut along each of the pencil marks to
make slots.

6 Use the white wool, or string, to create a loom. Thread

it through the slot on the straight edge of the plate,
leaving a little bit at the back of the plate. Turn the
plate over and tie a knot to stop the end of the wool or
string from coming out of the slot.
Turn the paper plate back over to the front. Take the
7 loose end of the white wool or string and thread it
through the first slot on the right hand side of the
curved edge. Then feed it back through the bottom slot
on the straight edge. Repeat this until the white wool
or string has been threaded through each of the slots
along the curved edge.

8
Finally, tie the string onto the knot to secure it in place.
Cut off any excess wool. The loom is now ready to be used.

Use the piece of wool that will be the bottom colour of

the rainbow. This might be a purple or violet colour.
9 Thread it under the first string on the loom and then
over the next one. Repeat this over and under motion
until you reach the end and then turn back and repeat
in the other direction. Continue to do this until there
are four or five layers of the coloured wool. Snip off any
excess wool and tuck the end underneath the weaving.

10
Use your fingers to gently push the layers of wool
downwards to squash them together and get rid
of any gaps.

11
Repeat this process with each colour of wool until the
rainbow is finished. The red wool should be at the top
of the rainbow.
Top Tip:

Try not to pull the wool too tightly as you weave it.
