Tension
To ensure your knitting has the same measurements as the
pattern, it is a good idea to make a tension swatch before
you start knitting your project. A tension swatch is a small
sample of your knitting where you count the stitches and
rows and check them against the measurements (cm/in)
given in the pattern. If you get MORE stitches/rows than the
pattern’s tension, it means your knitting is tighter. If you get
FEWER stitches/rows than the pattern, your knitting is looser.
Sometimes, it works to knit tighter or looser to compensate.

Garter Stitch
10 cm/4” = 17 stitches
10 cm/4” = 34 rows

Stocking Stitch
10 cm/4” = 18 stitches
10 cm/4” = 22 rows

You can find all techniques at the back of the pattern.

5 BARK BLANKET
HOW TO KNIT YOUR BARK BLANKET
Your blanket is worked mostly in stocking stitch with a garter
stitch border, in 4 block colour stripes. Once the knitting part
is done you can use duplicate stitch to add letters of your
choice to complete your blanket.

1 Using colour A, cast on 137 stitches using the cable

cast on technique.

2 Knit 1 row.

3 Slip the first stitch purl-wise, knit to the end of the row.

4 Repeat step 3 until your piece measures 4cm/1.5” from

the cast on edge. (Approx. a further 12 rows.) You must
work an even number of rows.

5 Increase row: Slip the first stitch purl-wise, knit 7

stitches. Knit 15 stitches, increase 1 stitch. Repeat
the sections inside the stars () a further 7 times. Knit
9 stitches. (145 stitches.)

6 Slip the first stitch purl-wise, knit 7 stitches, purl until

you have 8 stitches left of your row, knit 8 stitches.

TOP TIP: You may find you need to loosen your tension for
the 8 knit stitches of the garter stitch border to even out
the tension difference!

7 Slip the first stitch purl-wise, knit to the end of the row.

Cable cast on / Ø Online video tutorial

1 Create a slipknot on the left needle. Insert the right

needle knit-wise into the slipknot. Wrap the yarn around
the needle clockwise.

2 Scoop the right needle forwards.

3 You now have a stitch on the right needle - pull on the

stitch to make it a little larger.

4 Slip the stitch onto the left needle. (You now have 2
stitches.)

5 To cast on your next stitch, insert the right needle

between the 2 stitches, then repeat steps 2 to 4.

Stocking stitch / Ø Online video tutorial
A basic stitch pattern where you knit all the stitches of one
row, then purl all the stitches of the next. These two rows are
repeated to make the pattern. The ‘right’ side of the fabric
looks like a series of ‘Vs’ and the ‘wrong’ side of the fabric
looks like a series of ‘waves’.

RIGHT-SIDE WRONG-SIDE

Slipped edge stitch

To create neat edges, the pattern may tell you to slip the first
stitch of your rows, either knit-wise or purl-wise.

To slip knit-wise: Hold the yarn behind the work (away from
you), insert the right needle into the first stitch knit-wise, and
slip the stitch onto the right needle without knitting or purling
it.

To slip purl-wise: Hold the yarn in front of the work (towards

you) and insert the needle purlwise, and slip the stitch onto
the right needle without knitting or purling it.

Right-leaning decrease / Ø Online video tutorial

Instead of knitting only one stitch at a time, knit two stitches
together. Insert the front of your right needle through the first

11 BARK BLANKET
two stitches on the left needle, then knit them together as a
single stitch.

Increasing / Ø Online video tutorial

Make a new stitch by inserting the left needle from front to
back under the strand of yarn between the last stitch worked
and the next stitch to be worked, and lifting this loop onto the
left needle. Now insert the right needle into the back of this
loop (from right to left, BEHIND the left needle), then wrap
the yarn and pull through as for a knit stitch.

Adding a new ball of yarn / Ø Online video tutorial

When your ball of yarn runs out, or when you need to change
the colour, tie a loose knot on to the tail with the new ball of
yarn and slide it up to the needle. Tighten the knot. Continue
knitting with the new yarn.

Casting off / Ø Online video tutorial

To complete your project, you need to cast off your last row of
stitches in order to make an edge that won’t unravel. For your
final row, knit the first two stitches. Using the tip of the left

#WOOLANDTHEGANG 12
needle, lift the first stitch up and over the second stitch and
then slip it off the right needle. Now you have only one stitch
on your right needle. Knit the next stitch from the left needle,
then lift the previous stitch over it and off the needle as
before. Do this with each stitch until there are no stitches on
the left needle and just one stitch on the right needle. Cut the
yarn, leaving a 15 cm/6’’ end. Pull on the last loop until the
end pops through - you’ve now secured the last stitch.

FINISHING TECHNIQUES
Weaving in the ends / Ø Online video tutorial
Weave the ends of your yarn into your knitting to finish it off
and stop it from unravelling. Thread the tail onto the sewing
needle. Weave the yarn along the edge of your knitting as
shown in the illustration. Where you have started a new
ball, weave one tail in one direction and the other tail in the
opposite direction. Weave in approximately 10 cm/4”, then
cut the tail.

DUPLICATE STITCH
This technique allows you to create the effect of your motif
being knitted into the piece, without the hassle of knitting
with multiple colours at the same time! Simply knit up your
blanket in the base colours, and then embroider on your motif
using the duplicate stitch technique.

15 BARK BLANKET
HOW TO SEW ON YOUR GOOGLY EYES

Duplicate stitch
This technique allows you to create the effect of your motif
being knitted into the piece.

Instead of knitting with multiple colours at the same time, you

simply knit up your piece in the background colour and then
embroider on the motif afterwards. Easy as pie!

1. Secure your yarn on the wrong side of your fabric, in the

place where you want to start sewing.

2. Bring the needle through to the right side of the fabric, at

the bottom of the first stitch you’ll embroider over.

#WOOLANDTHEGANG 16
3. Tug on the yarn until all of it has been pulled through to the
right side.

17 BARK BLANKET
4. The spot where you've pulled the yarn through is at the
bottom of the little 'V' formed by the stitch in the knitted fabric.
Your duplicate stitch will sit on top of this stitch, hiding the
yarn under it, and it will look as if it was a knitted stitch. First,
form the right-hand 'leg' of the stitch by inserting the needle at
the top of the stitch, under both 'legs' of the stitch above it.

5. Now pull the yarn through.

19 BARK BLANKET
6. Complete the stitch by inserting the needle in the same
place where you started off.

#WOOLANDTHEGANG 20
7. Pull the yarn through to the wrong side of the fabric, and
finish off the stitch.

Repeat steps 2 to 7 to continue your duplicate stitching.
