Act 3 – SSC

Marie Gwendy D. Manalon

BSN 4 - F
1. Differentiate: "Filipino," "regular priest", and "secularization issue."

 Filipino are people who are inhabitants or native to the country of the Philippines. During
the early Spanish colonial period, Filipino was already being referred to the Indio natives
of the Philippines.
 Filipino was also used by the Spaniard colonizers to refer Spaniards that were born in
the Philippines. Majority of the Filipinos come from various Austronesian ethnolinguistic
groups. Each ethnolinguistic groups have each own language, identity, culture, and
history.
 Regular Priests
o Are priests who belonged to religious orders. Their main task was to spread
Christianity. Augustinians, Augustinian Recollects, Dominicans, Jesuits, and
Discalced Franciscans are one of the examples of regular priests. They were
trained specifically to run the parishes and were under the supervision of the
bishops.
 Secularization Issue
o Is the movement of a society from something with religious values and
institutions towards non-religious values and secular institutions. Secular priests
do not belong to any religious order. They were trained specifically to run the
parishes and were under the supervision of the bishops.

2. Discuss the stand of the regular priest and the secular priests in relation to the
administration of Philippine provinces.

 When bishops persisted on visiting parishes administered by regular priests,

claiming that it was their duty, the regular priests refused, claiming that they did not
fall within the bishop's authority. In their stead, secular priests were appointed. Under
the direction of bishops, secular priests are educated to administer parishes.
Archbishop Basilio SantaJusta hastened the ordination of Filipino seculars because
there were not enough secular priests to fill all of the vacancies. Regular priests
criticized the move once the royal proclamation was issued, believing the Filipinos
were not priestly material. It took on a racist tone, with the Filipinos' dark color, lack
of education, and lack of experience being mentioned.

3. If the word "propaganda" means to give out information, analyses why the secularization
issue became a crucial point in the Propaganda Period of Philippines history.

 Secularization has become a growing topic as more and more countries modernize.
Propaganda period is a turning point in our Philippine literary journey. Which in turn
engendered the seed of discontent among the Filipino reformists, which in turn fanned
the flame of Philippine revolution.
