TODAY’S LESSON:

Let us start the lesson by gathering your ideas about Computer

Programming. As we go through this weekly module, just reflect on the
following questions:
 How many times have you checked your phone this morning?
 Did you use your internet/ mobile for an hour after you woke up
this morning?
CHAPTER 2 – Les
INTRODUCTION TO JAVA PROGRAMMING

In this module, we'll cover the background of where Java came from
and how it fits into the modern landscape of programming languages. We'll
also go over how to install it, and we'll bring up an interactive environment
for exploration.

You must be excited to flip over the pages and begin with the lessons. But first, please
answer the pre-test to measure what topics have you known so far.

WHAT I KNOW?
DIRECTIONS: Read each item carefully and choose the letter of

HISTORY OF JAVA PROGRAMMING

LANGUAGE

Java is a programming language originally developed by James Gosling at the Sun

Microsystems and released in 1995 as a core component of Sun Microsystems. The language derives
much of its syntax from C and C++ but has a simple object model and fewer low-level facilities.
James Gosling initiated the Java Language project in June 1991. The language, initially called
Oak after an oak tree that stood outside Gosling’s office, also went by the
name Green and ended up later renamed as Java,
from a list of random words. It promised “Write Once, Run
Anywhere” (WORA), providing no-cost run-times on popular
platforms.
With the advent of Java 2 (released initially as J2SE
1.2 in December 1998), new versions had multiple configurations
built for different types of platforms. J2EE targeted enterprise
applications; J2ME for mobile applications, J2SE designated the
Standard Edition. In 2006, for marketing purposes, Sun renamed
new J2 versions as JavaEE, JavaME, and JavaSE, respectively.
