ABOUT THIS MODULE

This module has been carefully crafted to ensure the delivery,

understanding, and transfer to real life applications the Most Essential Learning
Competencies (MELCs) in Mathematics 10 as required by the Department of
Education. The activities and assessments are aligned
with the competencies to ensure that learner
achievement is optimally reached. The parent or
guardian is provided space to get involved in the module
(feedback, suggestions, and observation). The learner is
given self-improvement opportunities through
reflections, personal prayer and journals. Values
integration is given a very important part in the module.
In this unit, the standards are:
CONTENT STANDARD
The learners will understand the history of Computer and its
evolution from ancient times up to present, and the capabilities of modern
computers as well as the limitations.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learners are expected to be able to know how to manipulate
the components of computer system, the basic operation of computing,
and how the computer works.

FORMATION STANDARD
The learner will become a responsible catholic in providing Christ-
centered services and helping others in a way that both of them can produce a
combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.

For this week, our learning target is listed below. Monitor your progress in this week’s
module using this checklist of learning target.

THE BASIC OPERATIONS OF COMPUTING

INPUT OPERATION
The input operation is the stage where the raw data or
input data are arranged into some convenient form ready for
processing. The data gathered are entered or captured
electronically and are transformed into a form that can be
collected through the use of input device, such as keyboard,
mouse, microphone, or scanner.

PROCESSING OPERATION
This operation involves manipulation of data. The input data are transformed and
usually combined with other information to produce data into a more useful form.

OUTPUT OPERATION
The computer produces the information from the data in an understandable form. The
output operation is the final stage or the product of the processing stage.

SECONDARY STORAGE OPERATION

In the storage operation, the data, the information, and program are stored and
secured. A computer needs a device that serves as an auxiliary storage or secondary device
that will keep the data after the processing operations have been done.

ELEMENTS OF COMPUTERS
The computer’s basic operation can only be done if the following elements are
available:

1. Hardware
It consists of all the tangible parts and physical components in a computer
system. The hardware includes, among other devices, the keyboard, the mouse, the
screen, the printer, and the computer processing device itself.
Computer hardware typically consists mainly of all electronic and mechanical
parts of the system. It includes all the peripheral devices or any piece that is attached
to a computer. In general, computer hardware is classified according to the four
computer operations it performs.
2. Software

Page 4 | 9
A sequence of instructions written in a language that can be understood by a
computer is called a program. The term software refers to a set of computer programs.
The programs that manage, run, and operate the entire computer system are
the software. Software consists of instructions that tell the computer what to do and
how to execute a certain task.
A wide variety of computer software is available today. Although the range of
software available is vast and varied, most software can be divided into two types:
a. Application Software
Application Software is a program that has been developed to perform a
specific task, to solve a particular problem, or to give entertainment.

etc.

A software package refers to a group of programs that solve a specific problem or

perform a specific job. The following are some of the most popular application software
packages for microcomputers.
1. Word Processing
The word processing software allows a computer user to type, edit, format,
print, and store text or document. There are many word processing software
packages available today, such as Microsoft Word, Corel Word Perfect, Windows
Write, Adobe InDesign, etc.
2. Spreadsheet
Spreadsheet allows the user to create alpha-numeric tables and financial
schedules. It consists of columns and rows arranged as a grid on a screen. It has
an important feature of recalculating the formula whenever a number in the entry
is changed. With the use of electronic spreadsheet, this tedious job can be
simplified, reducing the risk of computational errors. Today, the popular
spreadsheets programs are LOTUS 123, Microsoft Excel, and Quattro PRO.

b. System Software
System Software are the main reason why the application software interacts
with the computer it is a set of one or more programs designed to control the
operation and extend the processing capability of a computer system. Its main
function is to help the computer manage its internal and external resources. The
system software can run without the application software but the application
software could not run without the system software. In general, a computer’s
system software performs one or more of the following functions:
1. Support the development and execution of application software.
2. Monitors the effective use of the various hardware resources such as CPU,
memory, peripherals and other components.
3. Interacts and controls the operation of peripheral devices, such as printer,
disks, tape and others.

Page 5 | 9
There are three types of system software:
1. Operating System – It is the software that enables the computer to
work.
2. Utility Programs – These are special types of programs whose main
function is to either enhance existing functions or provide enhanced
services offered by the software programs,
3. Language Translator – The main task of this type is to convert
programs into machine language.

3. Peopleware
Peopleware are the most important elements of a computer system. These are
people of all levels and skills, from rookies to professionals who use computers with
the aim of finding solutions to improve the way of life. Their job varies from the simple
word processing to the more advanced system programming. A typical Electronics
Data Processing Department (EDP) set up consists of the following personnel:
a. Programmer – a person in charge in preparing the program for the entire
system.
b. Computer Operator – involved in ensuring the proper operations and
setting up of processor.
c. Data Entry Operator – converts data from source document into a
magnetic media form suitable for input into a computer system.
d. System Librarian – handles the library of user’s manual, keeps the tapes or
diskette library, and protects the installed programs and data for archiving.
e. Database Administration – creates a data dictionary that records
organization-wide data definitions and standards.
f. Information System Manager – focuses on internal activities such as
systems analysis of program preparation.
g. System Analyst – in charge of system analysis, how computer data
processing can be applied to specific user problems, and in designing
effective custom-made data processing solution.
h. Telecommunications Specialist – in charge of the design of internal and
external data communications network that serves the organization.

MY REFLECTION

Based on our lesson, what are your new learning and realizations as a child of
God? In the space below, write your lesson’s reflection through a prayer. A related
Bible verse is also provided below to help and guide you more on the prayer you will
formulate. Together, let us do things toward His Holiness because we are precious in
His eyes.
