Rationale

Project PPE (Portfolio Predicate on Exemplar) is a backup contingency

response of the Schools Division of Surigao del Sur for learning delivery and
learning resource which parallel to the on-going endeavors of the higher
offices in the Department. It is the utilization of a lesson exemplar that is
streamlined in a teacher-and-learner-friendly format to cater to the new
classroom setup in light of the COVID-19 health crisis. These exemplars will be
paired with a self-contained and self-instructional portfolio.

The portfolio is a deliberate collection of works that highlight a learner’s effort

that would enable him/her to see his/her growth and achievement, ability to
reflect on his/her own work and ability to establish goals for future learning.

Introductory Message

For the teacher:

What is It

APPLICATION PROGRAMS

Application software consists of Programs that direct computers to

perform specific information processing activities for end users. These
programs are called application packages because they direct the
processing required for a particular use, or application, which users want to
accomplish. Thousands of application packages are available because
there are thousands of different jobs end users want computers to do.

Types of Applications Software

Application software includes a variety of programs that can be

subdivided into general-purpose and application-specific categories.

1. Word Processing Software

Word processing software is used to

create, manipulate, and print
documents. Documents can be any
kind of text material. Some examples of
documents are letters, memos, term
papers, reports, and contracts. Popular
word processing packages include
WordPerfect, MS-Word , WordPad,
Notepad.

2. Spreadsheet Software

A spreadsheet is an electronic worksheet

used to organize and manipulate
numbers and display options for what-if
analysis. The electronic spreadsheet has
rows and columns stored in the
computer's memory and displayed on its
video screen. On the other hand,
spreadsheet packages include Microsoft
excel, Apple Numbers.

8
3. Presentation Program

A graphics program can display

numeric data in a visual format
for analytical or presentation
purposes. Presentation graphics
programs are used to create
attractive finished graphs for
presentations or report like the
MS PowerPoint program.

4. E Mail and Communication Software

These packages can connect a microcomputer equipped with a modem to

a public and private network. Communications software enables a
microcomputer to send and receive data. Communications programs are
used by all kinds of people inside and outside business. For examples are
students doing research papers, travellers making plane reservations,
consumers buying products, investors getting stock quotations and
economists getting government statistical data. Popular communications
software includes Broadband, Smart Bro and DSL.

5. Database program

A database management
package or database
management system (DBMS) is a
software package used to set up
or structure a database. It is also
used to retrieve information from a
database. Example of this are;
Oracle, MS Access.

INSTALLING PRINTER AND ENSURING CORRECT PRINTER SETTING

Printer is a peripheral device which

makes a persistent representation of
graphics or text, usually on paper.

It is an output device that produces

a hard copy of data. The resolution of
printer output is called as DPI. Printer are
9
one of the most popular computer peripherals and are commonly used to
print text and photos.

Types of Printer

Below is the list of all the different types of computer printer.

1. 3D printer – is a device that creates a physical object from a digital

model by layering materials. 3D printers used in many industries,
aerospace engineering, dentistry, Biotechnology, and Information
System.

2. AIO (all-in-one printer) –alternatively referred to as a MFP

(multifunction printer), AIO is short for All-in-One, describes a hardware
device such as an All-in-One printer that is a printer, fax, and scanner
all in one device.

3. Dot matrix printer-The term dot matrix refers to the use of dots to form
an image. In a dot matrix image, the quality is determined by the
number of Dots per inch.

4. Inkjet printer – The most popular for home computer users that prints
by spraying streams of quick-drying ink on paper. The ink is stored in
disposable ink cartridges, and often separate cartridge is used for
each of the major colors. These colors are usually (CMYK) (Cyan,
Magenta, Yellow, Black).

5. Laser printer – was first developed at Xerox PARC by Gary

Starkweather and released in 1971 that utilizes laser technology to
print images on the paper. Laser printer are often used in corporate,
school, and other environments that require print jobs to be
competed quickly and in large quantities.

6. LED printer – Similar to a laser printer, LED printers are non-impact but
used a light-emitting diode instead of a laser in the print head. LED
printers were initially developed by CASIO and function by Focusing
light across entire length of the drum, thus creating areas that are less
charged, which attracts toner.
The printer then transfers the toner from the drum to the paper
and applies intense heat to fuse the toner to the paper.

7. Plotter - a plotter is a computer hardware device much like printer

that is used for printing vector graphics. Instead of toner, plotters use a
pen, pencil, marker, or another writing tool to draw multiple,
continuous lines onto paper rather than a series of dots like a
traditional printer. Though once widely used for computer-aided

10
design, these devices have more or less been phased out by wide-
format printers. Plotters produce a hardcopy of schematics and other
similar applications.

8. Thermal printer - a thermal impact printer or electrothermal printer is a

printer that is used heated pins to “burn” images onto heat-sensitive
paper. These printers are commonly used in calculations and fax
machines; and although they are inexpensive and print relatively fast,
they produce low resolution print jobs.
A thermal printer, thermal transfer printer, or thermal wax-transfer
printer uses thermal ribbon to melt colored wax on paper for photo
print. It was invented by Jack Kilby.

How to Install Printer

Most printers are easy to set up by following the manufacturer’s instructions

and using the installation disc.

The Set up process is usually the same for most printers:

1. Install the cartridge in the printer and add paper to the tray.
2. Insert installation CD and run the printer set up application (usually
“setup.exe”), which will install the printer drivers.
3. Connect your printer to the PC using USB Cable and turn it on.
4. Look in your printer folder on your computer.
5. Print a test page. In windows, right-click on the printer and go to
“Properties” then click the “Print Test Page: button, then the “utility” tab
and click “Print Test Page”
If all goes well, your test page will print and your printer will now be set
up.

Assigning Default Printer

To change your default printer:

1. Choose Device and printer

faxes in the control panel (Start,
Control Panel, Device and
printer).

11
2. Right-click on the printer you
want to make the default
printer.

3. From the context menu that

opens up select “Set as Default
Printer.

Printing a Document

Printing is a process for mass reproducing text and images using a

master form or template.

Steps of how to print a document

1. Open the document that you

desired to print

12
2. Navigate to the Print
pane, then

3. Select the desired printer.

4. Enter the number of

copies you want to print.

5. Select any additional

settings if needed.

13
6. Click Print

Saving Data/ Files to storage devices

Computer data storage is a technology consisting of computer components and

recording media that are used to retain digital data.

A storage device is any type of computing hardware that is used for storing,
porting, or extracting data files and object. Storage devices can hold and store
information both temporary and permanently to a computer, server or
computing devices.

Example of data storage devices are:

 Floppy Disks
 Random Access Memory
 Read only Memory
 USB flash drives
 Memory Cards
 Hard disk drive
 SD card
 DVD/CD

The steps required on how to save a file to a standard location.

1. Launch the File Save dialog. In

the File Menu, select the Save as
menu item.

14
2. Name the File. Open the folder
containing the desired file.

3. Select the desired folder in which

to save.

4. Specify a file format type.

5. Click on the save button.
