Notes to the Teacher

Let the learner explore activities and concepts in this module at
their own pace but set a specific date for submission.

What’s New

Computers differ in size, capability, and function. There are computers used to
process and transfer bulk information, and some are used for simple tasks. In this
module you will be introduced to the basic concepts of computer systems
specifically to the following topics:

4. Electronic Data Processing

5. Classification and Types of computers
6. Components of Computer System
⮚ Hardware components, software, peopleware
7. Hardware components and peripheral devices

What is It

Electronic Data Processing

What you input into a computer is called data, and then it will be
transformed into useful information. The process that makes data into its useful
form is called electronic data processing or EDP. The electronic data processing
cycle consists of the following:

INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT

STORAGE

Input – It refers to all activities associated with recording data and making it
available for processing. It presents the process of transforming data into a form
that a computer understands.

Processing – After the data is recorded and converted into an appropriate form, it
must be processed. Processing includes different arithmetic and logical operations
such as classifying, sorting, summarizing, comparing and other manipulation
techniques that convert data into information.

Output – Data processing converts data into information that will be transmitted to
the users of information. The result of the process is called output.

Storage – The storage device contains the processed data for future use. A storage
device is a hardware component of a computer that permanently stores data.

Components of Electronic Data Processing

Hardware – Hardware is the physical aspect of computers that you can actually
touch. Hardware includes not only the physical computer but also the cables,
connectors, power supply unit, and peripheral devices such as the keyboard,
mouse audio speakers, and printers.
Software – This is the non-tangible program now known as software.
Peopleware – This refers to the developers and users of the computer system
hardware and software.

Definition of computer
● Computer are machines that perform a specific task or calculations
depending on the set of instructions, or programs.
● Computer is a programmable machine that can store, retrieve, and process
data.

Classifications of Computers
The following are the classifications of computers according to its size and capacity
to process data.

1. Supercomputer – Super computers are very fast and most powerful computers
in the world. These computers are used in high-end scientific research centers, for
weather forecasting, and other complicated tasks because they can perform
hundreds of millions of instructions per second and they are very expensive.

2. Mainframe – Mainframe computers are powerful multi-

user computers that are capable of supporting many
hundreds or thousands of users simultaneously. Government
organizations and large organizations like banks uses these
type of computers for bulk data processing and storing. To
give you an idea, the automated machines ATMs are small computers connected to
a bigger “mainframe” computer that processes transactions immediately and sends
back to the ATMs even from remote locations.

3. Minicomputer – Minicomputers are mid-sized multi-user computers that are

capable also for doing high-end processing but smaller compared to mainframe
computers.

4. Personal Computer – Personal Computers (PC) are also called

microcomputers because of their microprocessors for processing
data and instruction codes. They are single user computers
which are portable and are easy to handle and use.

Types of Microcomputers by Size and Capacity

1. Handheld Computer-It is a computer that is small enough to be

handheld.

2. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)-It looks like a handheld PC, designed to

perform only specific task. It can serve as your diary, a telephone.

3. Tablet Computer-It is a wireless and flat screen computer which

can used for researching, playing games, watching movies, and
listening to music.

4. Laptop or Notebook-It is a portable computer that is use by

people who frequently travel and need to be able to work while on the
road. It has a flip-up screen and functions with a battery and
adapter charger.
5. Desktop Computer – It is a computer that is designed to be placed
on top of a table or desk.

6. Smartwatch-This gadget is a wearable computing device that closely resembles

a wristwatch.

Computer Hardware Components

Computers are the physical equipment that responds to a specific set of

instructions in a well-defined manner and executes them. The following are the
components of a computer hardware:

Computer System Case – This covers and protects the

Inside components of the computer system. There are full tower,
mini-tower, small form factor system case. ar

Internal Hardware Components:

1. Motherboard – the main circuit board where the cards, processor,

and memory chips are placed.

2. Central Processing Unit (CPU) – is the brain and the

heart of the computer system. This also known as the
processor or microprocessor. si

3. Memory – There are two types of memory.

a.) Radom Access Memory (RAM)-It is also known as

temporary memory because RAM can remember a lot of things,
but once computer is turned off, the data stored will be erased. Examples: Double
Data Rate (DDR2), SDRAM, etc.

b.) Read-only Memory (ROM)-It is a memory that remembers a lot of information

saved and it cannot be changed or erased.

4. Hard disc drive (HDD) – It is permanent storage device

found in the inside system unit.

5. Optical disc drive (ODD)-It is an optical drive that retrieves and reads stored
data on optical discs like CDs, DVDs and BDs(Blu-ray discs)

6. Floppy drive – Now a days floppy drive is rarely used, it is

use to read data stored in a diskette.

7. Expansion Cards –

a.) Video card - Also known as video adapter, graphics card,

display adapter. It is an expansion card that allows the
computer system sends information specifically graphics or
visual multimedia elements to an output device like monitor or
LCD projector.
b.) Network card – Also known as Network Interface card (NIC).
It allows the computers to communicate with other devices.

c.) Sound card – This card enables the computer to produce sound
through audio device. tTs

c.

8. Power supply – It supplies electrical power that enables all

internal hardware components to work.
9. CPU fan – It keeps the inside parts of the system unit to be
cooled down.

Input device: These devices includes anything that the users of computers utilize
or manipulate to give instructions to the computer. Examples are shown below.

Keyboard Mouse Joystick Track ball Webcam Digital

Camera

Head phones Light pen Barcode scanner Scanner Graphic tablet Touch screen

Output device: These are devices used to display and communicate information.
Some output devices are shown below. Touch screen monitors, can be both input
and output (I/O ) device.

Monitor Printer Thermal printer Speaker Plotter

Storage device: These devices keeps and stores data for future use. Examples of
storage device are tape drive, Zip drive, diskette, floppy disk, SD card and Micro SD
or Memory cards including all devices shown below.

Solid State External drive Floppy disk and diskette Hard disk drive
(HDD)
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Compact disc(CD), Digital versatile disc
Flash drive (DVD), Blu-ray disc (BD)

Peripheral Connectors and Ports:

Serial Advance Technology Attachment ( SATA)

cable ATAPI or IDE cable

Video Graphic Array (VGA) cable Power cable

Audio port Local Area Network (LAN) port Video Graphic Array (VGA)port

Power port PS2 port Line printer port Universal Serial Bus port
( (USB port)

Now that you have studied all the basic concepts in computer
hardware, you can now proceed answering the succeeding learning
activities.
