Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to Technology and Livelihood Education Grade 7 and 8 Alternative Delivery

Mode (ADM) Module on Computer Systems Servicing!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed, and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher, or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their
personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st-century skills while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the
module:

5
What I Need to Know

This module is designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master the
nature of Computer Systems Servicing. The scope of this module permits it to be used
in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence
of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with
the textbook you are now using.

The module is divided into three lessons, namely:

● LO 1 – Plan and prepare for the task to be undertaken
● LO 2 – Input the data into the computer
● LO 3 – Access information using a computer

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. select appropriate hardware and software according to the task assigned and
required outcome.
2. enter the data into the computer using appropriate programs/applications.
3. access program/application containing the information required according to
company procedures, and
4. apply ergonomic guidelines in working with data.

What is It

A computer is an electronic device that performs tasks based on instructions

given by the user. The computer system works starting with the data entered by the
user, then the computer processes the data and produces the output. A computer
system is composed of hardware and software.

Basic Components of a Computer

Hardware – tangible or physical part that performs the various tasks of the computer

Input devices – used to enter data such as text, images or pictures, audio or sounds,
and video.
Examples of Input Devices:
● Keyboard ● Web Camera ● Microphone
● Mouse ● Gamepad ● Trackball
● Scanner ● Joystick

Output Devices – use to display and alter data in the computer

Examples of Output Devices
● Monitor ● Speaker
● Printer ● Headset

Processing - This is responsible for all primary functions of data management. The
processor requires components that support it with the management of data to operate.
● Motherboard ● Clock ● Power Supply
● Chip Set ● Battery ● Lan cards
● Data Bus ● Memory ● Video cards
● Address Bus ● Hard disk drive ● Ports and Wire
● Expansion slots ● Optical Drives

Software
These are instructions that tell the computer how it should do its work. They
process data into usable information.
Computer software can be classified into the following categories:
1. Operating System - is the basic software responsible for interacting with the
hardware. It helps the user to enter programs or data, store them in files, and
execute programs. Examples of Operating systems are Windows, UNIX, XENIX,
HP –UX and AIX, Apache, and Disk Operating System.

2. User Program- computer programming languages are FORTRAN, COBOL, BASIC,

C, C++, Java

3. Application Programs - Popular example of application software is the Microsoft

Office suite which includes word, excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer, and
Mozilla Firefox are examples of web browsers.

Ergonomics is the study of how a

person’s work environment and tools
affect the person. A person who designs
workspaces and tools that help people
do their jobs and use their tools
comfortably and safely is called
ergonomist. There are ergonomic
keyboard, mouse, desk, and chair to
help design a workplace.

4
The Keyboard
The importance of learning keyboarding skill enables the user to the proper
placement of the keys. Each button is designed to control the different parts such as:
1. Function keys – represented by the most common F1 key. Each function key
provides instructions to the computer for a certain task.
2. Special keys are those we used the most like the delete key and backspace key.
3. Numeric keys – represented by numbers and special keys like (), @, &,%, and #.
4. Pointing keys – these are used to move from different directions
5. Lock keys – used rarely on documents
6. Numeric keypad – used to enter a number from 0 to 9-
