What is It

What is application software?

The software is a kind of program that enables a user to perform some
specific task used to operate a computer. It directs all the peripheral devices
on a computer system – what to do and how to perform work. Without
software, we can’t operate hardware and perform any calculations. A
computer system can be divided into three components: the hardware, the
software, and the users. The software can be further divided into mainly two
parts: Application software and System software.

System Software
System software provides a platform to run the computer’s hardware
and computer application to utilize system resources and solve their
computation problem. It is written in a low – level language, like assembly
language so it can easily interact with hardware with the basic level. It
controls the working of peripheral devices. System software acts as a
scheduler for the execution of the processes and arranges the sequence
according to their priority and Input/Output (I/O) devices requirement and
creation of the process. The best-known example of system software is the
operating system (OS). It is responsible for managing all the other programs
on a computer.

Application Software
Application software is capable of dealing with user inputs and helps
the user to complete the task. It is also called end-user programs or only an
app. It resides above system software. The first user deals with system
software after that he/she deals with application software. The end-user uses
applications software for a specific purpose. It is programmed for simple as
well as a complex task. It can either be installed or access online. It can be a
single program or a group of small programs that are referred to as an
application suite. Some examples are Word processing Software,
Spreadsheets Software, Presentation, Graphics, etc.

12
Types of Application
The different types of application software include the following:

Five Ways to Open Microsoft Word

Here are the different ways to open Microsoft Word as one of the word
processing applications that are commonly used by the end-users. You can
use any of the following for your convenience.

1. Click the search button in the taskbar. Type “word” without quotations
marks into the search box. Click “Microsoft Word 2016” (or any version of the
word in your computer) in the list that appears.

Click the search

button in the task

3. Press the Windows key and “R” on the keyboard at the same time to bring
the Run dialogue. Type “WinWord.exe” without quotation marks into the box.
4. Right-click on an empty area of the Windows desktop. Hover the mouse
pointer over “New” in the menu that appears. Click “Shortcut”. Type
“C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE” into the box.
Click “Next”. Type “Word” into the box and click “Finish”. Double – click the
word shortcut that appears on the desktop to launch Word.
5. Open an MS Word file on your computer by double-clicking it. If you are
asked to choose an application to open the file with, select “Microsoft Word”.
You may close the file you have opened if you do not want to use it now and
open another one instead.

Closing a Windows Program on your computer

When you are through with a Windows program, close it to save
computer resources. Closing a Windows program removes its window from
the screen and the taskbar and removes the program from memory. Before
you close down a program you should save any documents you have opened.
Perform one of these actions to close the program or just the document
window.
1. Click the program window’s Close button in the upper – right corner of the
window to close the program. To close just the documents window, click its
Close button instead, which is often located just below the program window’s
Close button.
2. Press Alt +F4 to close an active open window. This typically closes just the
current document window unless there’s only one document open, in which
case, it will close the application window too.
3. Choose File (or click the Office button) – Close to close just the current
document window.
4. Choose File - Exit to close the program and all open document windows.
If a dialog box appears, click Save or Don’t Save, depending on whether
you want to save the changes.

Typing Techniques
Some of you can type with a keyboard under your fingers, while others
struggle with even the simplest words. If you’re under the second category,
don’t worry several effective typing techniques can help you achieve an
excellent typing speed.
Daily practice is certainly required to achieve higher speeds and greater
accuracy. In the end, the results are guaranteed to be worth it though this
topic will introduce you to the best typing techniques.

https://www.typinglounge.com/typing-techniques

1. Touch Typing Techniques

https://www.typinglounge.com/typing-techniques

18
The most important technique to learn to type faster is touch typing.
This is a technique based on developing muscle memory for your fingers, and
this is done by combining several other typing techniques into it.
Muscle Memory – By practicing regularly your fingers will be able to remember
where the letters are on the keyboard.
Looking at the keys – At first, you will need to look at the keyboard, but in
time, the need to look at the keys as you type will diminish.

2. Typing techniques: The Home Row

It is called the home row because this is the home position for your
fingers. This is the position that your fingers will return to after you finish
typing something, and this is the position from which you will learn how to
find all letters and characters on the keyboard. Mastering the A, S, D, F, J, K
L; keys is the most important technique.

https://www.typinglounge.com/typing-techniques

3. Typing Techniques: The Top Row

Place your fingers in their default position on the home row, and look
at the key above each of your fingers. For “F” this will be the “R” key, for “J”
it will be the “U” key, and so on. The only exception to this is your index
fingers. They should be able to not only reach the “F” and “J”, but also the
keys “G”, “H”, and the keys directly above those as well. This is because your
index finger is the most mobile and it’s easier to cover a larger number of keys
with it.

4. Typing Techniques: The Bottom Row

The bottom row is possibly the easiest row to master, because by now,
due to all the practice you’ve had, your fingers are much more used to the
motions of typing, and your muscle memory is starting to develop. All you
have to do is learn the new letters of the bottom row using the same principles
as the ones used for the top row.

19
5. The Numpad Typing Technique

The Numpad requires a typing

technique on its own. If you look at the
five (5) keys you will see the same raised
bar as on the “F” and “J” key. Unlike the
home row that is not the position for
your index finger, it’s where the middle
finger needs to be. Your index finger will
rest on the “4”, while your ring finger will
be on the “6” key.
The keys directly above and below each
finger are also part of their motion range,
and the “+” or “Enter” key can be hit with
either your pinky finger or your ring
finger. Your thumb is reserved for the “0”
key.

to-type-numbers-and-decimals

Typing Technique to Avoid Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI)

A well-performed and accurate typing technique will also help reduce
the risk of RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury), which is also known as the carpal
tunnel. This will require correct hand positioning and smooth eye – finger
muscle communication. Below are some points to remember.
1. Keep your feet on the floor to maintain balance.
2. Position your body to the “H” key. Hold your elbows at sides.
3. Keep your overall posture in a straight position.
4. The chair should be 10 – 15 cm away from the keyboard.
5. Have your fingers curved over the home row keys.
6. Remember to keep wrists off the keyboard.
7. Eyes should be on the content while fingers locate the keys.
8. Warm-up hands and fingers before long typing sessions.
9. Stretch and relax your fingers afterward.
