World-class architecture and interior design firm dwp | design worldwide partnership created
the design for the acclaimed five-star Bumrungrad International Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand.
HealthExecNews.com included this famous hospital at Number 7 on their top list for the ‘25
Most Beautiful Hospitals in the World’.

dwp created and renovated many areas, facilities and departments at the design-award-
winning Bumrungrad International, in a series of developments, which have set benchmark
standards for hospitals around the globe.
Over the last 5 years, Bumrungrad
International Hospital undertook a full
renovation and upgrade project. dwp
were called upon to create a calm,
contemporary, atmospheric interior
design concept, welcoming to patients and
visitors. Making use of natural materials,
tonal colour palettes, accent lighting
solutions, custom signage systems and
graphics, dwp succeeded in evoking a
sense of comfort, wellness and warmth.
An underlying ‘Zen’ theme is referenced to
all interior spaces, including specialist
clinics, sky lobby, VIP lounges,
international food court and a ten-story
central atrium. The streetscape and
signage works help address high volumes
of traffic and to clarify the way finding
experience within the hospital campus.
Hedged foliage walls and timber clad
walkway structures brings definition to
pedestrian and vehicle traffic pathways.
The initial scope covered some 12,000sqm of the interiors, but dwp were then retained to
provide the interiors and FF&E for the new Women’s Centre and Department for Disease
Control (DDC), completed mid-2010. dwp created a fresh, contemporary identity for the centre,
while complimenting other areas and ongoing refurbishment works in the community. The
functional and spatial requirements meant the layout needed to be very efficient, but also
generous and practical, in providing user comfort to patients, visitors and staff alike.

The interior scheme drew from an underlying warm, contemporary, ‘zen’ Asian theme,
depicted in the common area, connecting spaces via the visual language. The area introduced a
new and rich colour palette, as well as soft materials and intimate screened seating areas, for a
unique identity. To maximise comfort and efficiency, lounge style seating areas are located
adjacent to the examination rooms and are linked by streamlined cross-over circulation spaces,
allowing for staged waiting sequences and improved traffic flow.

The latest phase, completed in the first quarter of 2012, saw dwp create a calm, contemporary,
atmospheric interior design for their Labour & Delivery Department. This included 6 labour,
delivery and recovery wards, an invitro fertilization department, 4 C-section rooms, and a
family waiting area with internet-corner, to be separate from the rest by a glazed door still
allowing for observation. Furthermore, a central nurse-station, utility-rooms, preparation and
recovery rooms, plus staff areas and facilities were to be provisioned.
Inspiration for the design was drawn from the idea of the purity of new-born babies and the
healing power of nature, to create a light and soothing ambience. Natural colours, materials,
artwork and other elements were combined with the smart integration of medical equipment
and attention to design and functional detailing, to ensure an integral wellness and medical
experience all through and beyond delivery of baby.
