Cleveland Clinic Cancer Building

Creating a World-Class Cancer Outpatient Building

Around a Patients First Philosophy
Cleveland Clinic Cancer
Building
Cleveland, Ohio

Area: 380,000sf
Cost: $188,000
Completion: 2017

Cleveland Clinic selected Stantec to lead

the healthcare planning of a new cancer
treatment center on their main campus.
Working in association with design
architect William Rawn Associates, we
provided programming, planning, and
design services for the 380,000 sf,
seven- story outpatient building. The
facility consolidates cancer treatment,
research, and administrative space into
a multi-disciplinary cancer clinic. Our
approach follows the desire to pair
multi-disciplinary teams with multi-
disciplinary disease programs. Rather
than asking patients to travel from one
specialist to another, our design
supports meetings either together or
sequentially to address each patient's
unique needs.
Gardner Packard Childrens Health Center

Quality Healthcare Built on a Foundation

of Trust and Partnership
Gardner Packard Childrens
Health Center
Atherton, CA
Area: 8,900sf
Cost: $3.5 million
Completion: 2014
The Gardner Packard Childrens Health
Center is a collaboration between Gardner
Family Health Network and Lucile Packard
Childrens Hospital. The Health Center
occupies the first floor of conventional
office space in the Atherton Square
Building. An existing lobby bisecting the
building from the street to the rear of the
structure created both a planning challenge
and an opportunity for us to create two
large modular clinic suites, joined by a
centralized Health Center lobby and waiting
space. The modular clinic suite design was
achieved by condensing all clinic spaces to
the interior of the floor plate, which freed
the existing crenelated building perimeter
for patient circulation and staff use. By
freeing the glazed perimeter for circulation
space, the design floods the Center with
natural light while creating a clear
hierarchy of circulation spaces for intuitive
patient wayfinding. The interior design was
developed using colors and materials that
followed the concept of the Center itself
open and peaceful. Colored glass accents
throughout the facility allow for patient
privacy without the feeling of isolation, and
the use of different fabrics helps to
differentiate between patient and staff
areas without exclusion.

Anshen Allen's Long Range

Development Plan for this county
medical campus provides for the
modernization and expansion of
ambulatory care facilities, inpatient
facilities, and convenient parking and
public amenities. The first two phases
(designed by Anshen Allen) consisted of
the replacement Main Hospital and the
Valley Specialty Center. The third phase
of campus development comprises two
buildings, Bed Building One, the tihird
major building on the campus plaza,
and Bed Building Two, located
immediately to the south. Included in
the new facility will be in-patient and
out-patient rehab therapy (traumatic
brain injury and spinal cord), aquatics,
ICU, acute care, pharmacy, cafeteria,
conference center, and general medical
and surgical beds. Due to sequential
phasing, Bed Building Two will be
constructed following completion off
Bed Building One.

The Valley Health Centers

Gilroy, Sunnyvale and Milpitas
Valley Health Center
Gilroy, CA
Area: 59,000sf
Cost: $35,692,000
Completion: 2008

The 59,000 sf Valley Health Center

Gilroy is part of a larger campaign by
the Santa Clara Valley Health and
Hospital system to extend
comprehensive primary care services to
the outlying communities of Santa Clara
County. The building comprises a mix of
county health services including
primary care clinics, ancillary support
services and a women and infant care
program. Designed concurrently with
two other Health Centers using a
modular approach employing a
common architectural language, height
restrictions on the site dictated a low,
two-story building that frames an iconic
double height entry rotunda. The
building is organized around a clinic
module concept that establishes the
organizing logic of the building,
provides for on-stage and off-stage
zoning, clarity of circulation, and ease
of wayfinding with views of the garden
and distant mountains beyond.
Valley Health Center
Sunnyvale, CA
Area: 44,700sf
Cost: $29,120,000
Completion: 2009

The 44,700 sf Valley Health Center

Sunnyvale is part of a larger campaign
by the Santa Clara Valley Health and
Hospital system to extend
comprehensive primary care services to
the outlying communities of Santa Clara
County. The building provides
comprehensive primary services as well
as a mix of county health services
including programs in mental health,
public health, women and infant care,
and drug and alcohol dependency.
Designed concurrently with two other
Health Centers using a modular
approach employing a common
architectural language, a small site
dictated a compact, three-story building
that is fronted by an iconic triple height
entry rotunda. The building is organized
around a clinic module concept that
establishes the organizing logic of the
building, provides for on-stage and off-
stage zoning, clarity of circulation, and
ease of wayfinding with views of the
garden and distant mountains beyond.
Valley Health Center
Milpitas, CA
Area: 62,500sf
Cost: $38,253,000
Completion: 2010

The 62,500 sf Valley Health Center

Milpitas is part of a larger campaign by
the Santa Clara Valley Health and
Hospital system to extend
comprehensive primary care services to
the outlying communities of Santa Clara
County. The project comprises a mix of
county health services including
primary care clinics, ancillary support
services, a women and infant care
program and an adjacent parking
structure. Designed concurrently with
two other Health Centers using a
modular approach employing a
common architectural language, a small
site shared with a senior housing
project dictated a compact, three-story
building that is fronted by an iconic
triple height entry rotunda. The building
is organized around a clinic module
concept that establishes the organizing
logic of the building, provides for on-
stage and off-stage zoning, clarity of
circulation, and ease of wayfinding with

Creating a Civic Icon

A Public Building the Public Doesnt Get to go Into

An Economic Engine for San Francisco

1998 - 2000
Moscone West
Moscone Convention Center
San Francisco, CA

Area: 744,000sf
Cost: $182,100,000
Completion: 2003

Located on a dense urban site in

downtown San Francisco, Moscone
West is the third of three buildings that
make up the Moscone Convention
Center complex. Moscone West is an
essential component of San Franciscos
important tourism industry, bringing
and estimated 250,000 visitors to the
City every year for conferences and
exhibitions. Comprising three levels
above grade and a basement level for
loading and storage, Moscone West is
the only building in the complex that
stands multiple stories - the other
Centers are located below ground.
With floor heights that measure nearly
40 high, and an overall building height
of over100, Moscone West has a strong
presence which creates an identity for
the Center in the City.

Cost: 30,000,000

Adaptive reuse of this historic

warehouse into a medical research and
teaching centre provides a range of
laboratories, classrooms, offices, library,
auditoriums, dining, and common
spaces within a newly-restored, seven-
story structure and faade. Existing
multi storey lightwells serve as focal
points for key public spaces. Research
and teaching labs and offices are
connected by a grand central stair and
interior pedestrian street, or Great Hall,
on the ground floor, which acts as the
main quad.
Green Earth Sciences
Research Building
Stanford University
Palo Alto, CA
Area: 60,000sf
Cost: $18,000,000
Completion: 1993

Forming a focal point along Stanford's

New West Campus Plan's principal axis,
the four-story building houses dry and
wet research laboratories, offices,
conference and seminar rooms,
computer facilities, and classrooms. To
meet Stanford's prescribed height limits
and plaza requirements for the site,
nearly 50% of the building's program is
located below grade including a
submerged landscaped courtyard.
Models and computer-directed lighting
studies were used to assess year-round
light levels for the below grade spaces.
